Prologue

"This isn't helping."

A golden dragon flew forwards. The universe was wrapped around them, eerie and black. Four dragons gathered around a star named Scorale. The star's bright light reflected against their scales.

"What isn't?" A green dragon retorted. He flexed his claws, which glinted in the light. "As the leaders of the Dragon Society, we make decisions for all of the dragons. What must be said will be said. So what isn't helping?"

A blue dragon sneered, revealing light-blue teeth. "We've been leading the tribe for centuries. Everything is fine."

A strong, tall brown dragon stepped forward. "Let her speak." He narrowed his eyes, his long light-brown whiskers streaming behind him. "Fern, Tide, do I have to do this? I might have to smash your heads in."

Fern and Tide shrunk away, looking grumpy, and the golden dragon flew to the front, her golden scales reflecting the light. She arched her head up, and announced, "dragons should be divided into groups of their own types."

"Like what type?" The brown dragon asked.

"Their knowledge about certain biomes, like the ocean and land. The space above, and the deserts."

"Glare, you know that you've missed many biomes, right?" Tide called out. "Rainforests, ice, savannas- and much more."

"I'm talking about the most important ones," Glare responded, her golden gaze looking at his blue gaze firmly. "We can be the leaders of the groups."

Rock sighed. "Tide, Fern, I know you're going to say-"

"Yes. It's necessary." Fern interrupted. "We can split up."

"But what if dragons want to switch groups?" Tide asked quietly, fidgeting with his tail flap.

Glare thought for a moment, then murmured, "at two years, the dragonets will come onto this platform." She motioned to the metal platform underneath her, high above the surface of Scorale. "They can change their groups, but after that day, they will belong in that group. No more changing."

Fern's eyes glinted mischievously. "Perfect."

Tide and Rock glanced at each other, having a silent conversation, as the stars flashed above them, showering them with a pale light.

"Yes." They whispered. "This is a good idea."

Glare waved her tail. "Starscales, Tidescales, Fernscales, Rockscales." She decided. "Starscales, to have all of the knowledge of the stars." She motioned to the galaxies. "Fernscales, experts for the ground. All of the knowledge of the crusts and mantles are in their minds. Tidescales will be great at water activities. Rockscales are going to be tough, strong dragons with a scales hard as rock."

The other dragons nodded.

Glare's golden eyes glinted as she stared at the other leaders. "Then let the change start."
