Chapter 2
•[Dawnpaw]•
Hello. My name is Dawnpaw. I was named this because I opened my eyes at dawn. Well, that's what Dappledheart says anyways. The others say she just named me that because she liked the name. Dappledheart is my mother, and the most beautiful cat I know. She's a dark brown tabby with a dappled pelt. Her fur is as soft as feathers or moss bedding, and her amber eyes gleam in the sunshine.
Dappledheart is very kind to me, but she can be very strict. When I was a kit, I liked causing mischief around the camp, but Dappledheart didn't like this very much, and she got very cross with me. I'm an apprentice now though, and I'm more well-behaved now than anything. Well except Duskpaw.
He's the master at being well-behaved.He never plays with me, all he does is go on and on about the Warrior Code and how great it is. He's always being praised by the senior warriors because he's the best at fighting, the best at hunting, and the best at doing as his told.
Who is this Duskpaw, you may ask, and why does he sound do boring? Well, he's my brother. He used to be good fun, but ever since we became apprentices he's been boring, boring, boring.
"Come on, Dawnpaw! It's time for the gathering!" A dark browntabby tom mews.
That's Hawkswoop, my mentor. He's the best mentor in all of the Clans, and unlike Duskpaw, Hawkswoop is very good fun.
"I'm coming!" I reply, padding over to him and racing out of the hollow with my clanmates.
Soon enough, we reach the river, which marks the border between WoodenClan and CloverClan territory. We safely swim across, and stop to help the elders and queens get over too.
Gingerflower has the most trouble getting across. She's the oldest cat in WoodenClan and can barely get out of camp without falling over or running out of breath. Yet she always insists on going, saying she'd rather die than miss out on all the drama.
Soon enough, the land around us starts to become more rocky. The grass is long here, and instead of trees there are spiky bushes, and huge, green hills. Jagged rocks jut out everywhere, making it easy to accidentally step on one and get your paws cut. Finally, we reach Silverstones. A smooth stone area surrounded by many huge hills. There are three rocks jutting out of the top of Silverstones. The tallest one is Skyrock. This is where the leaders sit. Then we have Smoothrock. A round, smooth boulder right next to the Skyrock. This is where the deputies sit. Finally, we have Jaggedrock. A sharp, jagged rock leaning on to Skyrock. Underneath Jaggedrock, is a small space where the medicine cats sit. The rest of us cats just sit on the stone ground.
As me and my clanmates trot into the clearing, the other clan cats turn around to look at us .We are the last to have arrived.
Our leader Owlstar, leaps onto the Skyrock with ease, and turns around to look at the cats below her.
"Let the gathering begin!" She yowls.
The tabby she-cat turns around to look at the other leaders, before asking, "May start?"
The other leaders giver her a nod of approval.
"WoodenClan is doing well," Owlstar begins. "Prey is running well. We two new apprentices, Dawnpaw and Duskpaw."
Every cat at Silverstones turns to look at us, chanting our names.
"Dawnpaw! Duskpaw!" They chant, Dappledheart the loudest.
I puff out my chest with pride, while Duskpaw licks his chest fur with a look of embarrassment on his face.
My whiskers twitched with amusement. Only Duskpaw would be embarrassed to be made an apprentice.
"Tawnystar, would you like to go next?" Owlstar turns to look at a young brown and ginger tom.
He nods his head, and clears his throat before beginning to speak.
"PineClan is also doing well. The undergrowth is thick and lush, and we have lots of prey."
As Tawnystar finishes, a long-haired blue-grey tom steps forward.
"That's Rainstar." Hawkswoop whispers in my ear. "He's the leader of CloverClan"
I turn to look at the long-haired blue-grey tom, who has begun to speak. "Prey is running well in CloverClan." He says nervously. "We spotted a twoleg-kit playing near our camp, but we chased it off, and it has left us alone." He says, awkwardly dipping his head.
"I bet they didn't." I whispered to Duskpaw. "CloverClan are as soft as kittypets. If a twoleg walked right into their camp they probably wouldn't notice. They'd rub against its leg and purr!"
I let out a mrrow of amusement.
"Stop laughing! It's disrespectful," Duskpaw hissed, and he gave me a cuff on the ear.
"Who ruffled your fur?" I teased.
Duskpaw opened his mouth to speak, but Hazelclaw shot him a glare and he closed his mouth.
I suddenly turn my attention to the Skyrock, as a brown she-cat mews, "The gathering is over."
I hadn't even noticed her before. I wasn't paying attention when Hawkswoop told me her name. Owlstar leaps gracefully off of the Skyrock, closely followed by Tawnystar who goes to talk to a group of CloverClan and PineClan cats. The brown she-cat tentively places a paw on the top of Jaggedrock and slips on some loose stones, tumbling down on the sandy ground on her back.
A mottled golden tom burst out laughing and the brown she-cat stood up, shaking her pelt and giving the tom a playful cuff on the ear. Rainstar's whiskers twitched with amusement, and he jumped down too.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw a golden-brown apprentice pounce on a tall gray tom. The grey tom gave the other cat a nip on the tail. A snarl made the two apprentices stop in their tracks.
"Stop!" A gray tom hissed at them, "How dare you be so disrespectful!"
He glared at the gray tabby apprentice, "Especially you, my own son. Have you forgotten the ways of the warrior code!?" He leaned closer, "Have you!?"
The apprentice bowed his head, his tail between his legs, "N-no, Longgrass"
Tawnystar watched from the edge of the clearing, his eyes narrowed. He stood up and called to his clan. "PineClan! It's time to leave!"
Cats began to break up as if Tawnystar had commanded everyone to leave.
Owlstar padded over to me and my clanmates. "Come on everyone, it's time to go."
She padded away from the clearing, beckoning for us to follow her. I joined Hawkswoop and chatted away about the gathering with him.
"Did you see Dirtstar fall?" He asked me. "It was so funny! Even Leopardshine, her own deputy laughed!" He let our a purr of amusement.
She must be the brown she-cat then, I thought. And Leopardshine must be her deputy.
"Yes, I did see her fall. It was funny." I mewed.
Hawkswoop seemed happy with that. He padded away from me and went over to talk with Leafbreeze.
I saw Thornpaw and Sorrelpaw chatting nearby, and I went over to join them. "Hey Sorrelpaw, hey Thornpaw!" I said cheerfully.
"Hello, Dawnpaw." Sorrelpaw mewed. The tortoiseshell she-cat looked at Thornpaw, who was grooming his golden-brown tabby pelt.
"Oh! Hi Dawnpaw." He said quickly. "The gathering was good, wasn't it?" I asked him.
Thornpaw nodded,"Yep!" He said very quickly. He's acting really strange. I thought. I'll ask Sorrelpaw about it.
"Oh! Better go now, I think Oakfall is calling for me," Thornpaw mewed. He dashed away, nearly tripping over a loose stone. "I'm okay!" He called back, and continued to run.
Turning to Sorrelpaw, I asked her; "Do you know why Thornpaw is acting so strange?"
Sorrelpaw looked embarrassed. She quickly turned away from me. "Um...I'll tell you another day..."
I sighed. Did I say something? I shrugged it off, and continued walking. Before I knew it, we had reached the camp.
I padded into the hollow alongside my clanmates, and was instantly greeted by Dappledheart. She had stayed behind with a few others to guard the camp. "Hey, Dawnpaw!" She mewed, gazing at me affectionately.
"Hi Dappledheart." I purred.
"How was the gathering?" She asked.
"It was good, BushClan's leader- uh, Dirtstar fell off the Skyrock!" I exclaimed.
Dappledheart's whiskers quivered with amusement. "Is she okay?"
"I think so," I replied. "She landed in the sand, don't worry," I reassured her.
"Alright, well you should go to your nest now. You must be tired after the gathering." She said gently.
"I will," I responded, and padded off over to the apprentice's den.
"You too, Duskpaw." I hadn't noticed my brother, who was now talking to Thornpaw beside me. "Okay." The pale brown tabby tom replied, saying goodnight to Thornpaw before joining me in the apprentice's den.
"Goodnight, Duskpaw." I mewed. I curled up next to him, and closed my eyes, drifting off into a peaceful sleep.
