A Place to Crash

I drove through town until I arrived at my best friend, Lexi's house. I drove past the house and down the street to a gas station, deciding it would be better if I didn't leave the stolen truck in her driveway. I parked the truck to the side of the store by the dumpsters. Then I went inside and told the man working at the register that I had broke down, so that he wouldn't report the truck, at least not for a couple days any way.
I didn't really know what I should do now, since I hadn't planned any of this out. Not knowing what else to do, I had come to the decision of crashing at my friend's for the night to think about my next move. I stood at the edge of the parking lot watching the cars go by, waiting for my chance to cross the road. Finally I saw my opportunity and hurried across, I went about fifteen feet and made a left, then continued down the street.

There were no cars in the driveway at Lexi's house, so at first I wasn't sure if anyone was even home. But I pulled my emotions under control and knocked on the door, trying to remain hopeful. I glanced back at the road then shifted from foot to foot impatiently as I waited.
I was about to give up and just walk back to the gas station to crash in the truck, when I saw the blinds move on one of the front windows. The movement was so subtle I at first thought maybe I had imagined it. Until, I heard the door knob turn, then the door was pulled inward, and my friends face appeared in the opening.

"Lily?" She asked, wrinkling her eyebrows in confusion.
"Yeah," I answered,  with a shrug before sighing with relief.
"What are you doing here, I thought you were grounded? Is everything okay?" She peppered me with questions.
"No, not really. Do you mind if I spend the night?" I asked looking up at her pleadingly.
"Why are you even asking me that, come on," she responded rolling her eyes and moving out of the doorway. I wasted no more time making my way inside. Then I followed her to the kitchen.
"You hungry? I was making some peanut butter cookies, but I know you don't really like peanut butter. So you can have at the fridge if you want," Lexi said peeking into the oven.

The thought of food had my tummy rumbling since I hadn't been able to eat much of dinner. I gladly opened the fridge and started rummaging around, pasta salad was discovered, and I pulled it out with a big smile on my face.
"This is still good right?" I asked grabbing a bowl from one of the many cabinets.
"What is-," Lexi started lifting up the container in confusion, "Oh yeah, it should be I made it like three nights ago," she responded sitting the plastic square back down.
Lexi loved to cook and she was mostly self taught, but her food was almost always good. Her mom was a nurse and her dad was a doctor so she was alone most of the time. Not that she cared, she was pretty happy with her life exactly how it was, too bad I couldn't say the same.

I spooned some of the contents into my bowl before popping it into the microwave. I turned around as I felt a burst of heat, to find Lexi removing the cookies from the oven. They looked good. Almost good enough to make me wanna eat one, but I just didn't really care for the strong taste peanut butter had.
"So what's going on?" Lexi asked turning away from the cookie sheet.
"Just my stepdad being a creep as always and I'm tired of it. Actually, I'm more than tired, I'm done with it," I answered passionately, followed by the ding of the microwave.
    "What do you mean?"
"I mean just that I'm done with it, I'm leaving, I think I have enough money for a bus. I'm gonna get out of here, I'm gonna get away from him," I said stirring around the contents of my bowl.
"Why are you deciding this all of a sudden? What happened, I can tell you're not telling me everything. And where are you even gonna go?" She questioned, quickly becoming concerned.

I watched her slide a spatula under the last three cookies and move them to a plate before responding.
"If you're really gonna make me tell you the whole story please let me take a shower first," I pleaded, finishing off my food and placing my bowl in the dishwasher.
"You can shower while we talk," Lexi stated.
"Fine, whatever. I guess that's only fair since I've done it to you loads of times, but just a warning this isn't gonna be a pretty story," I said grimly, and headed towards the bathroom.

A little while later Lexi and I snuggled up in the bed together to watch a movie and eat popcorn covered in chocolate. No matter how bad a day was a little chocolate can always make it just a little bit better. Before going to bed I plugged my dead phone up to charge, not long after that I was passed out.
My eyes shot open, I looked around in alarm. I realised where I was and started to calm down, it was still pitch black outside. Why was I awake? Something must have woke me up. Did I have a bad dream? Then I heard it a vibrating sound quickly followed by a beep. Was that my phone? I walked over to find out, I had twenty unread texts.

You'll regret that you stupid bitch.

You have to come home sometime and I'll finish what we started.

You have to come home sometime.

I only read a couple before turning my phone off and going back to bed. I needed all the sleep I could get, then I had to get the hell out of here. It wouldn't take them long to find the truck and they'd know right where to look from there, Lexi's.
