Prologue
The rain pounded against the hospital windows as Dhruv lay unconscious, a fragile reminder of the chaos that had unfolded just hours before. Nandini stood by his bedside, her fingers trembling as they hovered over his, her heart heavy with the weight of betrayal and uncertainty. The monitors beeped softly, a rhythmic reminder that Dhruv was still alive—just barely.
She glanced at the doorway, expecting to see someone walk in, yet hoping no one would. Because soon, the questions would come. The suspicions. The inevitable doubt.
A soft creak broke the silence. Nandini turned sharply, her breath catching when she saw Tarini standing in the doorway. They were the mirror image of each other, two identical faces framed by the same dark hair and the same almond-shaped eyes. But in Tarini’s gaze, Nandini saw something she feared—anger, yes, but something far darker.
"You shouldn’t be here," Nandini whispered, her voice shaking, though she tried to sound strong. “You’ve done enough.”
Tarini’s lips curled into a smirk as she stepped into the room, her heels clicking against the sterile floor. "Done enough?" she echoed mockingly. "You always act like the victim, don’t you, Nandini? You always think you deserve everything—love, happiness, Dhruv." Her eyes flicked to Dhruv’s unconscious form, the malice in them unmistakable. “But what about me? Did you ever stop to think what I deserve?”
Nandini’s heart pounded in her chest. “What are you talking about, Tarini? This… this isn’t about you! This is about Dhruv—about the man you tried to—”
“Tried to kill?” Tarini cut her off, her smile widening, her voice dripping with venom. She tilted her head, watching Nandini with an unnerving calm. “You sound so sure of that, don’t you? But tell me, sister, who will believe you? You and I—we’re the same face, the same voice. Who’s to say it wasn’t you?”
The words hung in the air like a cold blade, slicing through Nandini’s last shred of confidence. She swallowed hard, her mind spinning. Was this part of Tarini’s plan all along? To confuse everyone, even Dhruv?
“You’re lying,” Nandini whispered, stepping closer to her twin, her voice trembling with anger and fear. “Dhruv will remember. He’ll know it was you.”
But Tarini’s smile only deepened as she leaned in, her voice a dangerous whisper. “Will he? When he wakes up… what if he doesn’t remember? What if even he starts to question what’s real?”
Nandini took a step back, her heart sinking. Tarini’s words were poison, seeping into her mind, planting seeds of doubt. What if Dhruv didn’t remember? What if he couldn’t tell them apart? She shook her head, trying to clear the fear creeping in.
But Tarini wasn’t finished. “You see, Nandini, you and I… we’re not so different after all. You’ve always been so sure of yourself, so certain that Dhruv would choose you. But what if, deep down, he’s never been able to tell the difference? What if it was me he wanted all along?”
Nandini’s chest tightened, her breath coming in shallow gasps. “You’re sick,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Dhruv would never choose you.”
Tarini’s eyes gleamed with something dark, something twisted. “Maybe,” she said softly, her smile fading into something more dangerous. “But in the end, Nandini, it doesn’t matter what Dhruv thinks. It only matters what everyone else believes. And right now, they’re all wondering… which one of us did it?”
The question hung in the air, chilling Nandini to her core. As Tarini’s words echoed in her mind, Nandini realized the terrifying truth: in the eyes of the world, there was no difference between them. Two faces. One crime. And only one would walk away free.
As Tarini turned and walked out of the room, Nandini sank into the chair by Dhruv’s bedside, tears blurring her vision. The storm outside raged on, but inside, the battle had only just begun.
"Who will believe me?" Nandini whispered to herself, staring at Dhruv’s motionless form, hoping that when he woke, he would hold the answer.
But the silence can never offer comfort. Only more questions...
