Chapter 5: Power Of Black And White
-Mavis P. O. V.-
We entered the market. It seemed foreign to me, due to the only market I ever have been to was the one back home, though I felt right at home with Zeref right beside me. Or, behind me, rather. Though I was holding his hand, without his knowledge, he seemed to be lagging behind a little. (A/N: Yes, they both know that they are holding hands and both think that the other doesn't know that they are.) It could be because he thought they might recognize him. I decided to ease his fear. If that WAS the thing bothering him.
"Don't worry, this town doesn't get much news. They don't even know who I am! I doubt they know about you, and even if they did, there are no guards here. This town is so small, there aren't any crimes!" I looked back at him to make sure that he heard me. I knew that he had when he smiled.
"Thank you." He replied gently. "What are you planning to do in the market? I don't have any money, and you don't seem to have any." I giggled at him.
"To make the lanterns, silly. Remember what I told you? Every couple in the town lets a lantern fly into the sky at night. I never had a friend to bring here, because my friends said that it was dumb or that they were busy whenever I could come here, but now that I have y-" I cleared my throat before I could say something too forward and chose my next few words carefully. " Now that I am your light, my first lesson on how to walk in the path of light is to have fun and join others in celebration! These booths that we're walking by show the different colors." I gestured my hand toward the booths on our right. We were walking down a row. On our left were other booths selling other random goods. Spices, blankets, fabrics, jams, fine pastries, and other stuff like that. "Sometimes other people send off lanterns, but they have to pay for them if they aren't couples. We'll get our for free!" I smiled and turned back to face forward, browsing the booths ahead of us. "Red one. Green one. Light Blue one. Teal one. Who would even buy a teal lantern? Better question is how did I even recognize that color? Ooh, a white one! It looks beautiful! Angelic even!" I suddenly stopped to stare at the lantern, forgetting about Zeref behind me, making him bump into me. More specifically, making my head bump into his chest, right around where his heart should be. A light blush spread across my cheeks. "Oh, I'm sorry, Zeref! I should have warned you that I was going to stop!"
He had a pink tint to his cheeks, which made me want to giggle, but I knew now was not the time. "N-no, it's fine. I-I wasn't watching where I was going, either. Oh, look. There's a black one." He approaches the stall. Seems like the man selling the white ones also is selling black ones.
"Aha, young man! You have quite the eye, there!" The vendor boasted with energy and enthusiasm as he talked to Zeref. "Some people say that black is an evil or dark color. That nobody should be proud of having a black lantern reflect their souls. But I say otherwise! Black is a beautiful color! It is amazing on it's own and it frequently teams up with white to make a powerful color combination that the world can't get enough of! Nature loves it! Mother Nature used this pairing to create the patterns of zebras, penguins, and most cows! Even our own culture uses this all the time! Without the power of black and white, we might not have Oreos, ying-yangs, or, well, your clothes there, sir!" "The power of black and white. That seemed good."
"Sir, we'll take them! One black and one white for my companion, here!" Zeref said after the man finished his pitch. " And may I say, I completely agree with you on the power of black and white. Black is indeed a very good color, and definitely isn't an evil color!" The man smiled at his words.
"Thank you, young man! Here you go, two lovely lanterns for a smart young man and his companion!" (A/N: No, I will NOT have him confuse them for a couple like most fan fictions do. I really like this man here. He is a good character and I plan on bringing him back later on in the story.) He handed Zeref the two lanterns and he then handed the white one to me.
"Thank you, sir. I hope that I run into you again soon." Zeref said to the man. The man smiled and nodded back at him before we continued to walk down the row of booths. "What a nice man. He seemed very jolly." I giggled at his comment.
"Yes he was. And he had a very smart outlook on life." I responded. I looked over at Zeref. "The power of black and white."
-Zeref P. O. V.-
That man's words change my mood internally and also helped Mavis restore my faith in living. She was smiling and so was I. It seemed like we were going to stop at the cafe before we send off the lanterns. Again, we didn't have any money, but I assume Mavis has another plan. That was something that I liked about her. She always has a plan. She had a brilliant mind and a big heart in that small body of hers. She was amazing. "The power of black and white."
