Chapter 2: Black Wizard Zeref
-Zeref P. O. V.-
After I told her my name, I finished my journey, walking through the market, leaving the city, to a small, empty cave. My home. The fire was still out from last night. It isn't much, but it's warm enough. I sat down on my crude bedding, a pile of straw with a pathetic wool blanket that I was barely able to afford. I sat on my bedding, thinking about her. She was the first person to see me without my hood on. Not only did she not freak out or scream or panic, she smiled. She was happy to meet me, called me a friend. When my hood fell, I stared into her beautiful emerald eyes, mystified by her. A feeling I never experienced, a warm feeling, came over my being, and grew stronger when she called me a friend. My heart was beating faster every second as I traveled home after meeting her. But, she doesn't know who I am, the Black Wizard Zeref. A young boy surrounded by darkness. I wish for a light to guide me, yet I do not have one. At least, not yet. I have found an angel that can guide me through the darkness. Mavis. I needed to see her again. I wanted to see her again. It had been about 3 hours to get though town. If I leave now, I'd have a chance of running into her again. I packed a rucksack with berries, small assortments of dry foods: cookies, biscuits, and crackers, two bottles of water, and a book of magic spells from the Magic Library that I found discarded in the forest. It contained spells that I could not learn, due to my dark magic curse. I also packed a flashlight in case night falls before I return. I threw my hood back up and left for the city.
When I reached the city, I searched the market for her. My eyes wandered, drifting across each of the shoppers, trying to identify my acquaintance. I spotted her at a medicine stand, placing a bottle of medicine into her dress pocket. After she finishes her transaction, she turns and notices me immediately. I back away and start walking out of the market, down an empty street, too nervous to continue my mission.
"Hey, wait!" She calls after me. I can already tell she's following me down the street. I duck into an alley before she notices. "It's me, Mavis! Where are you?" She looks around the street puzzled. I pull down my hood, knowing that nobody will see me here. "Come on out! Zer-" I quickly slap my hand over her mouth, muffling her announcement of my presence. I pulled her into the alleyway, placing her in front of me.
"Are you crazy? You can't just scream my name out! It will cause a mass panic!" Although I didn't say it, I was so nervous at the time.
-Mavis P. O. V.-
I was so surprised. I was also a bit scared and a lot nervous. He had pulled me into an alley, an inch between our faces. His deep, black eyes put me into a trance as I stared into them, frozen and mesmerized. My heart beat faster again. The warm feeling returned as I felt my cheeks burn. He took his hand away, not backing up. "W-What do you mean 'mass panic?"
He peeked out of the alley. It was clear because he continued to talk, still an inch from my face. "Do you know who I am? I am the Black Wizard Zeref! The most powerful and feared person in Fiore! Announcing my presence to the market would not only cause panic, but cause the guards to start a manhunt for me! I don't want to go to the prison cells." He looked a bit sad. "If I did, I wouldn't be able to finish my mission. To find a light to guide me through the darkness."
I had butterflies in my stomach. He was searching for a light and I was the light! I wanted to squeal, but I wouldn't let myself. I was able to speak a few words. "I c-could be the l-light! We are friends now! I don't care if you are the Black Wizard Zeref, I will help you! But, I can't right now." I felt a bit guilty as I remembered my mother would be home in an hour to teach my lessons. " I have to practice my Fairy Magic."
He perked up at this. "Fairy Magic?" He started to pull a book out of his rucksack that he was wearing under his cloak. "This book is all about Fairy Magic, though I was never able to learn it. You can keep it. Here, read some." He us sit down, and opened the book to a chapter on Fairy Glitter. The only spell left I need to master before I can finish my lessons. I started reading, learning to use the spell with greater efficiency. I read with interest, preparing mentally to use this spell at my lessons. I was so wrapped up in the book, that I didn't notice that Zeref had leaned over my shoulder, peeking at the book. I closed the book and turned to thank him, when I noticed. Once again, our faces were an inch away, his raven hair brushing up against my blonde hair. My cheeks started burning again, as the warm feeling came over me as our eyes met. My heart beat faster as I stood up and tucked the book under my arm. "I h-have to... go now. I guess I'll m-meet you here after school tomorrow, then. See you tomorrow, Zeref." I turned and started walking back to my house.
"Wait." He said. "Where do you live? I don't plan on visiting, but it would be useful to know where my light lives."
"I live on that big white house on the hill over there." I pointed to my house. My knees became weak when he called me his light.
"Thank you." He said with a smile, throwing up his hood. "I'll see you tomorrow, Mavis." With that, he walked down the street, towards where I assume his dwelling is. I waved at him and started walking home.
"My light" I thought. I played it over and over again in my head. The moment of him calling me that. His face burned into my memory. I skipped home, merrily, visions of the kind Black Wizard Zeref danced in my head and I could not shake the warm feeling or keep my heart from beating faster. I had just met him... though... I think I was falling in love.
