Chapter 13: Rude Awakening
-Third Person P. O. V.-
When morning came, the three men sat on some barrels around a table discussing plans for the guild. In the tent behind the building, Zeref and Mavis slept silently and peacefully, cuddling slightly.
"Now, I'll be the one to represent us to the owner of the building." Precht told his old friends. "I'll use my experience as a vendor to haggle with him until we can afford it with our limited budget. From the money that I had combined with the leftovers of our old "business" of treasure hunting and the money that the kids had with them, we have enough to purchase it, repair it, and keep it running for a year IF we get him to half the price. Thoughts?"
Yury stood up. "Yeah, how are we going to make money to keep it running AFTER that year?"
Warrod spoke up. "We take job requests, idiot! We go to the magic council and have the guild made legal. Then the members take jobs. Though, it won't take money to run it. Only to repair it and pay for damages."
Precht smirked. "I hardly think that they'll be many people making us pay for damages. I imagine this guild as a peaceful one where we don't cause problems, only solve them."
Yury scoffed. "Yeah, right. There's going to be at least two guys starting fights every day. Probably one guy who's all calm until you mess with their food or something then they practically explode. And maybe a girl who has to deal with all of them. Trust me, this guild has chaos written all over it."
"Maybe so, Yury, but while I'm out purchasing the building and Warrod is getting it legalized, there's something I want you to do."
Yury leans forward, resting his hands on his knees. "I'm listening."
-Out back inside the tent-
Mavis blinked awake with a yawn, smiling at the sleeping face of Zeref. She found it cute and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek as she got up and stretched. After she was finished, Zeref woke up. He rubbed his eyes.
"Morning, Mavis." he packed up his blanket and took out some biscuits for them. "Sleep well?"
She munched on her biscuit happily. "Yes! I was so happy that we came up with a great name for the guild!"
Zeref smiled at her. "Me too. You're going to be a great master. And I'm going to be a great member."
Mavis looked at him confused. "What do you mean? You're not going to be a member. You're going to be my personal helper!" She smiled wide.
He seemed a bit taken back by her answer. He finished his biscuits. "M-me? A helper? But... I'm a cursed being. I wouldn't be a good helper."
She finished her biscuits and crawled over to him. "Don't be silly. You're my boyfriend and I trust you with my life! We're going to be together forever and that means you're going to stay by my side while I'm the master! Even though I'm not immortal like you... But still, when I'm gone, I want you to be the master after me. So that Fairy Tail will have a benevolent master forever."
Zeref took her hands in his. "I can't promise that... but I'll try. But... I'll try to find a way to make you immortal as well... so we can be together forever." He kissed her.
Mavis blushed. "O-Okay. Let's go tell the others about our great name!"
Zeref put his cloak back on over his pack. "Yes. I'm sure they 'll be delighted to hear it!" The two of them left the tent and started to walk around the side of the building. They stopped when they heard a stern voice.
"Are you sure you haven't had contact with any of them?" it asked. Mavis' eyes widened. They heard Yury's voice and listened more.
"Yeah, I'm sure. Precht left us to become a vendor long ago and I haven't seen that wizard saint since he decided to quit treasure hunting to start a guild or something. I'm sure he hasn't gotten it legalized yet, so he'll probably do it soon. That will prove that he hasn't been here! The only one here is me and the only thing I got is the leftover money. I'm retired."
Zeref nodded, thinking Yury's excuse was very convincing since Warrod was going to be the one to legalize the guild. They'd have no clue that he was lying or connected.
"Did he say where he was going?" the voice interrupted. Yury shook his head. "Well, if I ever hear anything about you and Mavis Vermillion or the Black Wizard Zeref, you'll be hearing from me! The captain of the royal guard!" And with that, the captain and the two guards standing silently behind her left. Yury went back inside, followed by Mavis and Zeref after they couldn't hear footsteps anymore.
"Morning, kids!" Precht said, cheerfully. "You hear Yury's performance out there? It was great! They'll have no idea what we're doing or who we are. We're safe."
Mavis looked like she was about to burst into tears. "No... we're not..."
Zeref hugged his girlfriend. "Mavis! What's wrong?"
She looked up at him as tears started falling. "That was the captain of the royal guard... We can't beat her... She'll find us..."
Zeref hugged her tighter. "No, she won't. Wait, she?"
Mavis nodded. "Yes. The captain of the guard is a woman..."
Yury scoffed. "Why should I be afraid of some fancy woman? I can keep this act up every time she comes here."
Mavis turned to face the others. "You don't understand. They're after me because I my mother was training me to be in military! They called me the Fairy Tactician because of my amazing plans and magic. They probably think Zeref kidnapped me and you're aiding him. We should all be afraid of the captain... I've seen them go through so much to get what she wants in battle... I've seen her do powerful things without magic..."
Yury rolled his eyes, still skeptical. "What makes her so powerful? Why should we be so afraid?"
"Because" Mavis cried.
"She's my mother..."
