Chapter 1: Mavis Vermillion
My hand quickly turned off my alarm, like an instinct, telling me that the morning has come. I sat up in my bed and stretched before rising to my feet and walking to my closet. As usual, I picked my pink dress with the red ribbon and stood in front of my mirror to brush my long, blonde hair, flowing out around my tiny wing adornments on my ears. When I've finished getting ready, I leave my room and head downstairs to wait in the parlor for my mother. She trains me to use Fairy magic every week. I've mastered the defensive Fairy Sphere and the powerful Fairy Law, though I have not been able to get the hang of Fairy Glitter. I believe I'm missing the point. Like I need to learn an important lesson to unlock it. My mother says I'm too young. She can be strict at times, though I know that she cares about me inside. I sat in a comfy chair, tapping my feet as I waited, patiently, for my mother. After about 15 minutes, she entered the room, looking visually stressed.
"Oh, Mavis" she exclaimed in a tired tone. "I forgot that your lessons were today. I arranged for an important meeting today, so your lessons will have to be postponed until after school."
"Okay, mother. I understand." I answered, trying to mask my slight disappointment. "When will you be back?"
She hesitated, trying to remember an exact time. "After you come back from school, I should arrive after an hour. Also, I'll need you to run an errand for me after you get out of school." She digs through her purse and pulls a piece of paper out and hands it to me. "After school, go to the market and give this to the medicine stand. I've been having some really bad headaches lately, and I need some medicine. That's my prescription that our doctor gave me yesterday. Can you do this for me?"
I stood up, ready to leave for school. "Yes, mother. I'm off for school now! See you later!" I skipped down the sidewalk, waving to my mother. After a bit, I stopped skipping and walked. I saw lovely flowers in the yards around the city as I walked along the path. The sky was perfectly blue, without a single cloud to block the view. I passed through the market, due to it being a shortcut to school. There weren't any new stands, so I kept walking. I saw the medicine stand and considered giving the vendor the prescription, but it would be a pain to carry it throughout school, so I left it alone. After going through the crowd of shoppers and tourists browsing for souvenirs, I ended up walking down the beautiful walkway that leads to the school. The school was at the end of the path, so I started running to get there faster. The day was so good that I didn't even notice the man in the black cloak and hood walking down the pathway towards my direction. I was so distracted that I ran right into him, accidentally knocking him onto the ground.
"Oh, I'm sorry, sir! I wasn't looking where I was going. Are you alright?"
He spoke in a quiet tone, as if there was someone sleeping nearby. "Yes. It's my fault, anyway. I wasn't looking at the path, either." He dusted himself off, as I grabbed his hand to pull him up. When he stood up, his hood fell off, revealing a head of raven-colored heir and a pair of deep, black eyes, staring into mine. He quickly pulled his hood up as I noticed a very faint blush on his cheeks. "I'm s-sorry, but I must be going." He walked towards the market.
"Wait!" I called after him. "I never got your name!
He turned to face me. "Why do you need to know my name?"
I thought about that for a second. In the moment that I saw his face and stared into his eyes, a feeling washed over me that I needed to know his name. But, I couldn't tell him that. "I want to know the names of all the people in the city" I lied.
He turned back towards the market and continued walking. "I do not give my name to strangers."
"My name is Mavis!" I called. "Now we're not strangers. We're friends. Please. Tell me your name."
He stopped. He pulled down his hood and turned back to me, once again, his eyes staring into mine. "My name is Zeref." He pulled his hood back over his face and walked away, down his path.
I felt my heart pounding as the warm feeling that washed over me grew stronger. I smiled and skipped to the school, running into my friends, Crystal and Susan.
"Hi girls." I said cheerfully. They greeted me with friendly smiles.
"Hey Mavis." Crystal replied. "Who was that strange man in the black cloak you were talking to?"
"Oh, just a new friend. He's pretty nice."
"Do you like him?" Susan asked. She likes to tease me about stuff like that.
I blushed, slightly. "N-no. I just met him. He's just a friend."
Susan shrugs. "If you say so."
I was curious why Zeref acted so weird, yet I was nervous to ask them about my new friend. "Say, do you two know of someone called Zeref?"
They gasped. "How have you not heard of him?" Crystal asked after recovering from the slight shock. "He's a powerful wizard who uses dark magic! He's a terrifying person who killed lots of people!"
"They call him the Black Wizard Zeref." Susan added. "I'm surprised that you haven't heard of him."
"Well, we never learned about him in school and my mother never told me in my lessons. I need to get to class now. I'll see you two later." I walked up the steps on the school and walked to my first period class. I sat down in my seat by the window and stared out of it. For a moment, I thought I saw a black cloaked figure walking by, but it was just my imagination, because it vanished quickly. "Black Wizard Zeref" I thought. "How could someone who seemed so innocent be that evil?" I didn't care. Whether he was the Black Wizard or not, I would still be his friend. I would be the light that guides him out of the darkness. That warm feeling came over me again as I thought about him. I thought about him for the entire day.
