Anthony:
I was at the edge of my seat.
Sitting on the edge of a sidewalk with the street right in front of you is very uncomfortable for a long period of time, but the sidewalk felt like a good place to brood like people in movies often did.
They probably only had to sit there for like a few seconds before the director yelled, "Cut!", because my butt hurt from sitting there. I probably should have picked a better place, but none of my usual places to think felt appropriate for the thoughts going around in my head.
It was Monday morning and I still felt melancholy after what I had heard on Saturday.
My mother was a princess and my dad never thought to tell me...no, he chose not to tell me until now because my mother's family found out about me and wishes to see me soon.
It turns out I was a part of the aristocracy.
Not just any nobility, the royal family of Lesotho themselves who ruled their country in a parliamentary monarchy. Apparently, my mother had fallen in love with my dad in a forbidden romance when he visited Africa. He was part of Doctors without Borders for a while and visited the country. One thing led to another, they married, her parents were like no way and my parents left the country for America.
Now, as I sat there thinking my whole life's a lie, I heard a familiar voice in the distance. It was my best friend from before I met Danica, Trey. He was the first person to accept me with my impediment all the way back in middle school. The first day of school, he was a transfer from another district, he greeted me plus invited me to sit down at the desk near his. It was instant friendship when someone tried to trip the blind kid (me) and he not only prevented me from tripping, he casually remarked that people do not trip, they perform random gravity checks. The person swore he must have been insinuating and to this day, I do not know if it was a threat or not; I'm assuming probably not. He's an entertaining, amusing trickster of a fellow, definitely not someone who would intend harm on someone else.
I felt a nice gust of wind and realized he just sat down next to me.
"Did you put on some weight? Cuz I swear there was less wind the last time we met and you sat your butt down.", I teased back to him, turning my head to the right where I thought he placed himself.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Very funny. Who's the comedian here? Out of both of us, I'm the clown so leave the comedy to me. No, I did not gain any weight, its just pretty windy out today if you did not notice.", he responded.
"Well, if you say so, I'll believe it!", I remarked and grinned from ear to ear.
"In all seriousness, this is the first time we have hung out in like...forever man, what is up with you?", he commented.
"I see that you still lack in the math department, can't count to save your life, can you?", I remarked.
"At least I have a future in something already planned out with my talents in comedy as you know they are. Anyway, it feels like you've been blowing me off bro, what gives?", he asked.
Dodging the subject, I continued our banter on the game of who could pull whose strings. Right now, he was losing.
"What would your Momma say if she heard you using slang like that and not acting all proper?"
"She don't have to know a thing because she not in my life, you know that!", he responded and got quiet for a second.
His parents were a touchy subject that we tried not to breach. Currently, he lived with his grandparents in a condo for seniors. They were both civil rights activists and current members of NAACP. However, their daughter, his mother, and their son-in-law were serving time for drug possession. Before his grandparents had taken him in, he lived in the projects with them and suffered seeing his mom go through drug withdrawal when the police would take her to go to court-mandated rehab. The first time his mother went to a drug rehabilitation center, she had gone with his father and his grandparents were given temporary guardianship. Unfortunately, she only stayed clean for 40 days and started using cocaine again which meant when Social Services checked in, they placed him in emergency foster care until his grandparents filled out all the paperwork to legally adopt him. It was Mother's Day and Father's Day that were hardest for him with his parents being incarcerated so he gave a card to his Grandma on Mother's Day and his Grandpa on Father's Day.
I really wished I had not brought it up and had not placed my foot in my mouth. Not living with both of your parents probably sucked, I still remember when my mom was alive and my heart still aches at the memory of her. Her favorite dress, her favorite flowers, her favorite movie, I would see these things and start to cry and I had only known her for like 7 years! Imagine poor Trey who's known his parents were drug addicts all his life! It was really sad and I felt guilty for even mentioning it in front of him.
"Dude, can you forget what I said..."
"Its alright, my grandparents are great people. I don't hold it against you at all. On another note, who's the mystery girl you've been ditching me for?"
Boy does he forgive and forget easily when he's curious about something.
"What?", I said.
"You know, the girl who did not show up today for class, Danica I believe, the one you've been spending all your time with..."
"Oh Danica...she's a good friend."
"I think more than that if you..."
"She didn't show up?"
