Niamh

(Niamh pronounced n-eve)

Then she slapped me right across the face. I could feel my right eye swelling up.

"What was that for!?" I asked angrily.
"Leave!" Was all she said.
"Do you think I'm really going to leave?"
"No but I want you too."
"I have the right to stay."
"No you do not! I was here first! I don't give you permission to stay."
"Well I never gave you permission to slap me and you did."

She sighed really loudly.
"Please." I said. "Can you just tell me your name and something about you."
"Fine. My name is Niamh and I hate talking to boys."

I looked at her hard. I managed to see her emotions. She felt angry. Frustrated. But if I looked really carefully I could see a little bit of sorrow. I was confused. Was she feeling sorry for herself or for me?

I decided it would best if I got up and left. Just before I did though she grabbed my arm.
"Hey!? I'm leaving. You should be happy!" I shouted.
"I'm sorry."
"What!?"
"I said I'm sorry for slapping you."

I looked into her eyes.
"No biggy."
"Yes. Look at your eye. It's gold not red like it was before."

I ran my finger across my eye. I felt it was swollen.
"I guess I'd better report this." I said.
"Wait!" She yelled after me. I turned around fast.
"What!?"
"I'm coming."
"No you're not. You are going to sit and eat your lunch."
"No. I want to come." I sighed. Why are girls so demanding?

"So. Why are you here at this school?" She asked me.
"I moved away from my old home and got a new one."
"Where did you used to live?"
"Queensland. It's not that far."
"It's a bit far from Adelaide."
I looked at her and smiled.

"So have you always lived here?"
"Nope. I moved from England seven years ago. Mostly because I hated the weather. I hate rain."
"Well I hate the sun."

She started to laugh.
"What!!" I said in an angry playful voice.
"You hate the sun but you live in Australia?"
"I didn't really get a choice. My family live here and I am family." I said just as we reached the door.

Niamh let me walk in first. She followed close behind.
"Hello kids. How may I help you." Said the lady at the desk not looking up.
"D-Dusty has hurt himself." Said Niamh sounding a tad scared.

The lady looked up and saw my eye.
"How did this happen?"
"Well-" started Niamh but I interrupted her.
"I was walking and fell over the root of a tree and hit my eye on the bench. It really was nothing."
"Uh. Yes it is young man. Your eye has gone all swollen. What was its normal colour?"

I stopped and thought for a bit.
"It was red like my other eye."
"No. Before you dyed it."
"Oh right. Um. It was blue."
"Just wait there. I'll need to get the principle." I just nodded and sat down in the seats on the wall.

"Dusty I really am sorry." She said. It started to rain outside and Niamh swore under her breath.
"I better get going Dusty before the rain gets any harder."
She grabbed her hood from the black hoodie she was wearing and but it over her golden brown hair.
"Bye." I said as she walked out the door.

I was sat there for awhile. I think about fifteen minutes. Then the door opened and a tall pale man walked out.
"Hello. You must be Dusty. I'm mr. Pire. Please come in." He said in a happy cheerful voice.

We both sat down in seats opposite each other. He smiled at me then asked.
"So Dusty. What happened to you? Now please tell me truthfully. I can tell if you are lying."
"Um. Okay. I was running to someone I just met and I fell. As I fell I hit my eye on the bench." I said.

I tried looking at his emotions but I saw nothing.
"Now Dusty. I don't want to play your little games. So tell me now. Was that the truth?"
I slowly shook my head.
"Okay. I want the truth. NOW!" He shouted pretty loud.

I looked into his eyes again trying to read his emotions as I talked.
"I was sitting alone and I saw a girl across from me. I decided to go meet her so I got up and walked up to her. I put out my hand thinking she'd shake. Instead she slapped me across the face." I said still looking directly into his eyes but still nothing.

Mr. Pire laughed then said very seriously.
"Dusty stop trying to read me. It won't work."
"Sorry sir."
"Hmmmm. Now that eye of yours. Did it hurt when she hit you?"

I paused then said.
"Yes. But I thought that is vampires couldn't feel pain."
He just sighed.
"I guess that useless vampire you live with hasn't taught you anything."
"You mean vamp?"
"Yep. Anyway. Vampires can only feel one pain. This pain most people get emotionally. You got it physically. This is heartbreak."
"But why would I feel heartbroken?"
"You'll know one day." He said then pushed me out his office.

I wanted to see Niamh again. I tried looking for her but she never turned up. That was until one good morning when somehow I could feel her emotions.

Thanks for reading.
