Ramification
Life has its ways, that was a fact.
Destiny has its calls, that mysterious form of future, or maybe if we want to describe it fairly, those strings moving the marionette, playing it around the way it pleases whoever was behind the scenes pulling the strings back and forth. Thinking about how someone's life is completely out of their control, is pathetic.
Confronting one's weaknesses is harsh.
But you got rid of that bad habit of yours, now you are free from that overthinking you used to drown yourself into. You are peaceful, your brain is blank and free from any type of torture you used to down on it.
You never enjoyed nature the way you were doing now, looking at that beautiful field from your window, while the sun's rays were caressing your beautiful face, kissing your features gently with their warmth, you have reconnected with your love for nature again. You used to love flowers and not only that, you used to admire nature and its creature, you always used to find your long-lost peace when you looked in the garden of your house. Mr. Choi has always taken care of those lilies, they were your birth flowers, you always forgot to thank the man for his efforts albeit with the numerous mental notes you've made to appreciate his hard work.
But now it was too late.
You should have done it when you had the chance.
You were too absorbed in your trance, maybe the grass on that field was way too luring for your senses that they went completely numb, you failed to hear the approaching heels' sound although they were clacking loudly against the marbled floor. The child inside you wanted badly to enjoy some fun time in that field, you remembered the lost childhood of yours, you spent most of your time in your bed, sick, that your parents opted for homeschooling, thankfully your health had stabilized in your teens, at least you enjoyed high school you should be thankful for that.
And you were.
The voices that echoed in the corridor brought you to reality, but you weren't in the mood to meet anyone, honestly, the idea of meeting someone scared you so you urged your way to the window, closing it and shutting the curtains, welcoming again the darkness that you loved spending your time in its company. You went to meet the warmth of your duvet, turning on your left side while your back facing the door, you laid down closing your eyes, ready to surrender to your beloved slumber, to convince yourself and whoever at your door that you are asleep, so they can discard the idea of disturbing you further.
As the doorknob twisted, you clutched on your blanket as your tomorrow depended only on that, you hated this time of the day. Eleven o'clock. Whenever the clock signaled that time of day, you felt an urge to run far away from their reach, or precisely her reach. Miss Baek never came late to her habitual rendezvous with you, she was sometimes a few minutes in advance, but never late, and God, you hated the woman although she was only doing her job, at which she was very good, somehow you faired the woman who ensured your health's stability, tending to your needs when no one else besides her did, your crucial needs, you needed extreme care and the woman never failed to provide that for you, but you were ungrateful.
As the door cracked open, you were expecting to hear her high-pitched voice announcing the injection time as per her usual ritual of the mentioned time, Miss Baek has three visits to your quarter per day, at eleven for the injection, the daily dose of serotonin reuptake inhibitors was of extreme importance in your instance, the reason for which the women never missed her daily visits under any kind of situation, sometimes you wondered if she has a family to tend to, she was in her forties as it seemed to you, an age in which you assumed she would have a family of her own, perhaps a child who needs her care, but you grew bored of your unsatisfied curiosity as months passed by. Miss Baek often came to your room with some other medicines whenever prescribed by your doctor in charge, especially when she noticed that your blood pressure was high while doing her daily check-ups, or when your body reacted somehow weirdly, alerting her to strengthen the dosage of your daily intakes or to add new medicines to the pile you were already consuming.
Her voice was missed no matter how much you anticipated it, it succeeded in spiking your curiosity but you refused to give a glance at the door, you preferred keeping up with your cringe-worthy act, firmly believing that it'd help you avoid your medicines.
How childish of you.
To your surprise, a deep masculine voice echoed in your usually silent room, the tone of it was somehow husky and intimidating, but it was just like a perfume, with top and bottom notes, albeit the top note was powerful, enough to send few shivers down your spine, the bottom note couldn't go unnoticed, it held some warmth you craved, it felt almost like a spring breeze caressing your hearing, caressing your soul softly.
You sensed danger in all cases, your body was on extreme alert. There was a trespasser, an unknown.
" I guess she is asleep? is it normal for her to take a nap at this time?"
" No doctor, it's just one of her usual shows, she is such a good actress, don't let her fool you"
" Interesting"
You wished to possess some superpowers at that moment, you wanted to dig a hole and disappear when some strange footsteps were approaching your bed, you were sure from the sound emitted that it was not Miss Baek, the walking pattern was different, also from the sound it seemed that the person wore some flat shoes, which is not at all compatible with the woman's style. You decided to maintain your calm, waiting to study the intruder's behavior carefully before reacting.
"CUT"
" Miss L/N, although I'm truly amazed by your artistic skills, I suggest you drop the act for today"
He is playful.
As your show has been cut short, you decided to surrender. Throwing the duvet to the other side of the bed, exposing your face that has become like a tomato from the suffocation you forced upon yourself, you decided to meet the eager figure in front of you, and with it your daily call. It was for your good actually, you better deal with it and get it over your shoulders, so you can enjoy the rest of your day. Your wiseness should have made a cameo from the beginning.
" Miss L/N, shall we take a walk around today?"
Unbelievable!
If you had known that a savior angel in human form would appear before you today, you would have saved yourself the trouble, but would you not have realized long ago that there are no angels in this world? You should have learned a thing or two from your past by now.
The man motioned you to reach for his hand. The familiar feeling of hesitation visited your heart, you had never seen him around before, he seemed unfamiliar to you which added to your fears and uneasiness. Taking a deep look at his face, you realized that the man in front of you has an ambiguous aura, which goes very well with his deep intimidating voice, however, his eyes held an ocean of emotions that you were unable to decipher. He was enjoying standing between two different edges, he seemed anything but gentle, however, his actions were soft not far from congenial, he radiated a comfort that somehow reminded you of your father, he was strict yet very endearing.
As you looked intently at his features, it felt like you have saw him before surely not in your surroundings though. You were convinced that he may have made an appearance in one of those boring tv shows that you never liked, or maybe his photos have been plastered in some of the magazines you read to pass time.
" The weather today is very beautiful, I would like to show you around, it would be a nice walk"
That stern voice became in a matter of counted minutes so familiar to your ears, it was soothing. Something was different on many notes but you couldn't point it out, maybe something about his gaze, those dark orbs were mysterious yet captivating, that slender figure of his clad in a tailored three pieces suit gave you an approximate idea of the position he held. A doctor, maybe a chief, or a professor.
Your hand reached to intertwine with his, slowly, and without breaking the eye contact, your feet shifted from the bed to touch the cold ground beneath them, all the while, Miss Baek was watching your demeanor with complete bewilderment, it was the first time you interacted with an outsider. The man was kind enough to help you stand on your feet while you almost stumbled as your head started spinning around, giving you that dreadful feeling of nausea you hated the most, gently, he caressed your back, while his hold on your waist was firm enough, making sure you avoid chilling on the ground, gaining again some new bruises on your forehead.
" reasons for vertigo?"
" she had been diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo"
" side effects from medications?"
" Unknown reasons doctor"
The man flashed you a genuine smile, before letting go of the grasp he had around your waist, it wasn't a harsh one, but it definitely reminded you of some memories you tried hard to escape from, it sent some tribulation to your senses, which he didn't fail to notice. His hand went to reach your shoulder, over which it landed softly attempting to calm your uneasiness before it grows further resulting in a panic attack. Leveling to catch your gaze, he seemed to be studying your features looking for leads to understand your demeanor.
" Feeling okay? shall we go, or you prefer to stay in your room today?"
You shook your head aggressively, you really wanted to go out, thinking that he would change his mind, aborting the idea of taking you out with him altogether scared you a big deal.
A graceful smile adorned his lips, he seemed amused by your reaction, you seemed too innocent almost like a child, a child that needed care, a special one at that.
"Nice to meet you miss L/N, I'm Kim Taehyung, your new doctor"
Kim Taehyung.
You were hesitant about that handshake, he was still a stranger to you, however, you decided to act politely, slowly stretching your arm, your hand found its way to his own. You enjoyed the warmth it was radiating, the grasp he had on your soft hand was feathery, in contrast with the assumptions you made based on his appearance, his hand wasn't as soft as you expected.
The cold breeze welcomed you, the caresses it left on your face were so pleasurable, you were thankful to the man beside you, it has been ages since you last went outside, you missed the fresh air that you were forced to enjoy only from your window, your attention kept wondering here and there, your eyes were blessed with the beautiful view that exquisite garden provided, flowers have bloomed already welcoming a new season that you weren't aware it has begun, the petals falling from the cherry blossoms were creating a sort of carpet beneath your feet, everything seemed ethereal, but everything reminded you what you lacked, everything seemed a subtle reminder of what you have forsaken.
" Such beautiful weather isn't it?"
His raspy voice brought you back from your trail of thoughts, he saved you from your usual self-torment. Nodding has become your new language and you cannot even remember when it was since you adopted this new style of communication, you lost your words along with your freedom, sometimes you missed your voice, and even your sobs became silent which was very frustrating for you and also your doctors. Everyone tried hard to bring back your lost words, yourself included but to no avail, your mouth became carefully zipped, just the way your heart was completely shut.
" It's a bit chilly, I don't want you to catch a cold"
The gentleman beside you took his vest off, gently hanging it over your shoulders. His actions kept surprising you, it has been ages since you have received kind treatment from people, everyone treated you as an object that needed special care, but humanity was missed in their actions, sometimes you sensed fear in their eyes, they feared you and treated you like a beast that should be kept leashed and at bay, but he wasn't scared from you, he was worried about you.
You cursed inwardly those droplets that landed on your forehead, one was accepted, two were already a nuisance, but as you started losing count, your frustration grew, if it wasn't for the peaky eyes around you, and the gentleman at your side, few profanities would have surely escaped your lips, or at least, as words were missing, few screams could do the job just fine. Rain has become the antagonist in that movie of yours, your earnest wish was to cuddle with the outside world, albeit it was a fenced universe, contoured and isolated, a miniature of the large one behind the fence that you never thought of approaching, nevertheless, you were content with what you had, but life wasn't that considerate of your feelings, not even the weather at this point.
" I guess we will need to go back. Unexpected storm, I don't want you to get sick"
ugh!
There was no need for the pessimism you kept as one of your dear friends, one needs to be optimistic from time to time, albeit it was surely easier said than done in your situation. Your life wasn't one promising any brightness in its folds, if anything, it was pitch-dark, your senses got adjusted to that dullness, forgetting all light nuances or shades of clarity.
But the man decided to prove you wrong, or, to at least show you that some abnormalities could occur also in the pattern of your life that was programmed to nose-dive, never reaching a ground to crash on, as the purpose was to keep you in full suspense about the upcoming contact with the unknown blackhole that was designated to be the terminal. Hand firmly holding on to that small one of yours, he darted while dragging you on his own pace toward the entrance of the building, your gaze that was once fixed on your intertwined hands, has shifted to take final glances at its propinquities, bidding goodbye to the hospital's yard, until a next time if that was meant to be.
He led you somewhere, but not toward your boring room.
The air purifier in that room worked wonders, had you been in your old role as the wise and capable housewife, you would have asked for the name of the brand so you can buy one for your house. But there was no need to splurge, not at all, just enjoy it for free.
As you kept analyzing the room while maintaining your beloved silence, a few things or more captured your attention, one of them is the choice of colors for the furniture, black was dominant and you weren't complaining about it, just some unsettled curiosity left behind your late cheerful character. If you needed to point out something that has bothered you in that room, you would for sure point out the disturbing click-clack sound that you couldn't find its source, your eyes kept roaming around trying to catch the wellspring of the dreadful annoyance, but to no avail.
It was that damned magnetic balanced balls that were neatly placed on the desk. You finally sorted out the riddle.
The trip your eyes took around the room, ended with a landing on his beautiful dark orbs, he was looking at you intently, studying your every single move, trying his best to decipher your silent thoughts, while consulting his overworked brain on how to bring your words out, how to unmute you without forcing you gaining a backlash.
His mission was a difficult one, and he needed loads of patience to sit by his side.
" shall we put on some music y/n? we do have time at our disposal, let's have a small talk while enjoying the atmosphere."
You were a big fan of music, you enjoyed listening to and singing along with your favorite artists, but that was in the past, as for now, you cannot bear any unsettling sounds, even the genre of music you used to adore has become a nuisance to your ears, easily triggered your anxious state, and in some unlucky events, triggered a panic attack that you preferred staying away from.
Your absent voice and lack of response forced people to take decisions in your stead. As you were battling with your inner self on how to stop the man from taking further steps toward the stereo, his fingers already graced the buttons, it was only a matter of counted seconds until the sound reached your ears, soft violin rhythms blessed the room with a melodic harmony, only violin without jamming the background with other instruments that could stress your state, maybe some piano accompanying the beautiful cords, but nothing dramatic.
You liked it. No, you enjoy it and found it mesmerizing.
Just like the beautiful grin that has adorned your plump lips, a similar one has been pasted on his own, your happiness contaminated him, your positive reactions were the source of his serotonin. As your gaze interlocked with his, your smile widened, and he became in a short while, a strange source of comfort that made you forget many worries you had bottled inside you, when miss Baek informed you about the beginning of those sessions with your new doctor, you weren't in favor the idea spiked an apprehensive sentiment in your chest, a feeling that he succeeded in subduing.
The raspy voice of his that has become familiar to your ears, brought you back from your lost trance, although he has been lost in his own daze for what seemed a long time, while in reality was only a fraction of a minute, your demeanor was a riddle for him that he needed to resolve, again that same comportment of yours was intriguing to his senses, he spotted angels in your eyes when others described you to him as the reincarnation of the devil, he was lost between the talks and you, so he decided to reach out for the unrevealed truth with his efforts.
His slender figure moved further from the stereo that was placed on a vintage table near the coffee station, leading to his desk over which he leaned back taking a seat while discarding his black leather chair, and swiping it with the uncomfortable woody table. Pushing to the other side his nameplate, which stated his position in the hospital satiating your greedy curiosity, as it was written on the glassy plate with black incursive fonts ' Professor Kim Taehyung ', the man crossed his arms over his chest, all the while giving some subtle scrutinizing looks to your seated form, studying and memorizing your physical comportment wishing for some leads to understand you better, or if he is lucky enough, to draw some words from your sealed mouth.
"Tell me y/n, what do you like the most?"
Void.
The affirmation in your gaze provided him answers your voice failed to deliver, or let's say a subtle innuendo that made him understand that whatever answer was being held captive in your brain, was a firm one, a rejoinder that you were convinced about.
He needed to put a hand on it.
" let me rephrase my question y/n, what you used to like the most?"
The use of past tense sent your brain on a difficult mission to fetch answers. Your past has been divided into two eras, one has been erased and replaced with tragic memories, trashing your beautiful ones away in an ocean of forgetfulness, while the second was all about the pain you wished to escape from.
In your past, there was absolutely nothing you liked, unquestionably, nothing you cherished.
Your head hang low, while your eyes were buried in your lap, intently looking at your fingers as you kept fidgeting them. Your state alerted him, albeit he intended to dig deep, to provoke your state forcing any kind of reaction that could be to his gain, seeing your state has only triggered his protection instinct, an urgent need to comfort you visited his heart and brain, sending different types of encrypted emotions that he failed to decipher.
It took him seconds to reach your seat, towering over your delicate figure, his hand landed on your shoulder, softly patting on it which succeeded in bringing you solace. Your honey-colored orbs searched for his dark ones, seeking more assurance or perhaps, some needed comprehension.
Which he provided, fully.
"It's okay, we lose many things on this long path called life, nevertheless, with time, we figure out that those things we once appreciated, were actually of no value and that's why they got astray. We pick more valuable and useful ones while continuing our journey, things that are suitable for our growth, for our beliefs, for our needs."
A voice ever so soothing, an antidote for the poison induced in your soul, a healing ointment to your wounds that you never thought could exist, the words that you needed more than your injections, a touch that alleviated your agitation better than the tranquilizer that has almost lost its effect on your body. Humanity.
Benignity.
His hands both chilled on your shoulders, gently motioning you to stand on your feet to level with him, his eyes buried on yours as he wanted his words to penetrate your heart, convincing you without any form of pressure to revive the death part you have killed with your own hands, to revive yourself.
" let's find for you new purposes y/n, together, with me"
