chapter six
"Whats that?" Storm leaped in the air, glaring out her wings in shock as a handsome-yet-familiar face invaded her privacy.
"Mojave! Leave me be!" She snapped, flapping her wings till she was rested on a higher perch.
Mojave landed beside her. "What is it?" He asked, folding his wings neatly beside him. "Is it a secret? I'm good at keeping secrets!"
"It's a secret that I will know, and you will not." Sniffed Storm, pulling away from him.
Mojave smiled, shoving her. "I know at least one dragon who will already know it."
Storm blinked at him. "Who?!" She asked, alarm edging her voice.
"Inkwriter of course," scoffed the SandWing. "I mean, duh, he is a mindreader, oh yeah, AND he is a seer."
Storm panicked, her heart thumping. "Do you think he already knows?" She asked him, her vision dancing.
Mojave barked a laugh. "What? He's not Clearsight, of course not! I just mean, once you read it out loud he will see it, or once you read it in your head around him." He smiled at her. "No worries."
Storm hissed at him. "Slug-face!" She spat. "Your hoping to tell him, aren't you! See, this is why you aren't going to be able to see it." She hugged it to her chest and peeled back her lips.
Mojave stared at her. "You are a cruel one, NightWing," He murmured, wrapping a wing around her. "I promise I won't tell him. On my mothers head."
Storm shuddered, imagining Moonwatcher's head on a stake. "That sounds dreadful." She muttered. "Tell me that is not a saying in the Scorpion Den."
"Okay, it is not a saying in the Scorpion Den." Said Mojave, grinning slyly at her.
Storm shoved him. "You idiot." She huffed. "That's the most brutal sounding thing I've heard since 'on my fathers tongue'."
Mojave blinked warmly at her. "I also swear on my fathers tongue not to tell what is on the scroll... if you let me see it."
Storm shook her head apologetically. "I'm sorry, Mojave. You can't. It's not you, it's just... I have to figure it out."
Mojave looked crestfallen. "Oh.. okay..." he turned his face and leaped down from the perch. "I'll stop bothering you Storm... see you in Math." He pushed open the door and left, making Storm feel terrible.
She quickly put the scrap of paper in her bag and soared down after him. "Wait!" She called. "Mojave!"
She saw more doors swing open and realized he had left, leaving Storm and the others by themselves. Storm stared quizzically at them, wondering why they were standing around, watching her.
Her gaze fell on Whirlmist, who had a distant look in his eyes. Below the crash of the seven seas.. Storm remembered from the parchment. She needed Whirlmist!
Storm darted towards him as the group headed for Math, thankfully stopping the SeaWing before he exited. "What?" Snapped Whirlmist, his eyes narrowed.
"Whirlmist, will you take me to the kingdom of the sea?" She asked, breathless.
Whirlmist scoffed, rolling his pale eyes. "And how am I supposed to smuggle a SkyWing in there? Will you grow gills?"
Storm supposed he was right, that was true, how would she get there?
"Let me figure that out." Answered Storm. "Meet me at lunch outside Arts and Crafts."
Whirlmist rolled his eyes again, but nodded. "See you there, seahorse."
Storm fidgeted all the way through History, Moonwatcher had Mojave demonstrate how Animus magic turned fowl; it was quite interesting, but Storm couldn't pay attention.
She was counting down the seconds till they were released from class.
Five...
Four...
Three...
Two...
One...
The gong rang, loud and clear through the doorway, startling all the dragonets and making them look at each other in alarm.
Storm leaped up, exiting the room, even before Whirlmist, who was usually first. She bounded trough the lunchroom, out the door, and up to Arts and Crafts, where a familiar black NightWing was painting a pretty forest landscape.
She knew Whirlmist wouldn't be here as fats as she was, but she wished he would pick up the slack. Maybe he isn't coming... Would she have to seek him out herself?
But soon, a handsome SeaWing face popped up from the hall, his eyes disapproving. "Why do we have to go to the Sea Kingdom?" He hissed, his eyes low.
Storm shifted uneasily. "Promise you won't tell?" She whispered, pulling out the slip of parchment from her pouch.
Whirlmist looked skeptical, but nodded gruffly. "I promise... on my mothers head."
Storm pulled away, recollecting the morning moments. How Mojave had said the same thing before she told him he couldn't see.
But this is different. She told herself. Whirlmist doesn't share anything with me. She unfolded the paper, pushing away her skeptical feelings.
Storm shoved the paper into Whirlmist's talons, debating with herself about the pros and cons of this situation.
A major pro was the look of seriousness of Whirlmist's face. "Grab your Animus." He hissed. "We are paying a visit to my sister."
Mojave has reluctantly followed her to Whirlmist, telling her that he should be with Sphinx, or with Qibli, but he ended up following anyway.
Once there, Whirlmist started to explain, before Storm cut him off. "Whirlmist wants me to see the Sea Kingdom with him." She lied, jabbing the prince with her elbow.
Mojave sadly glanced at the two. "And?" He asked miserably.
Storm flicked her tail in hope. "We were wondering... we were hoping... would you cast a temporary spell to make me a SeaWing? Just for an hour or two?"
Mojave looked startled. "But your fine the way you are." He argued, his ears up. "Your- yea, nice."
Whirlmist glared at the sulking SandWing. "Turn her into a SeaWing or you'll hear from Queen Auklet!"
Mojave dipped his head. "Talons Of Fire, dissolve your desire, and become the Wings Of blue talon liars!" He cracked a smile at Whirlmist at the ending part.
Whirlmist glared at him. "Real smooth, now, Sto- what?" Storm looked down at her scales, they had changed from bright ginger to startling pale lavender.
"Oh, okay. This is interesting." She craned Her head to glance at her wings. "But, it's pretty."
"You'll need a cover name," Announced Whirlmist, lashing his tail. "How about... Seasponge?"
Mojave laughed. "You are a terrible dragon, Whirlmist. How about she goes as... Seafoam?"
Storm blinked. "I'll take that. Seafoam, Seafoam, Seafoam. Hey, I'm Seafoam." She coiled her blue tail up in pleasure.
Whirlmist nodded to Mojave. "Tell the teachers that... we got a pass from Moonwatcher... and.... yes. Say that, adios, we will meet you here, okay?" The SeaWing Prince seemed eager to get going.
"Yes, but..." the SandWing hesitated. "What time will you be back? I need to know."
"I don't know!" Snapped Whirlmist. "Use your pretty powers or something, we'll see you soon." He nudged Storm, and together, the two leaped up into the air and flew out of the cave.
About ten minutes in, Whirlmist swooped close to her and asked; "Why wont you tell him?"
Storm turned to him, startled. "What?"
Whirlmist glanced at her. "He's obviously sad about you, why won't you tell him about the note?"
Storm tried to think of the easiest excuse. "Because, his mother is Moonwatcher." She blurted. "And... I found this in her desk... I thought he might tell her..."
Whirlmist stopped. "So, your telling me that we came here on a teacher mission? Have you got coral where your brain should be?"
Storm came to a halt as well. "I... it's important." She deftly moved away from him and continued flying.
"So... Seafoam." Continued Whirlmist, flying beside her. "How's it feel to be a girlfriend to an animus?"
Storm whipped around. "He's not my boyfriend!" She spat, angrily glaring at him. "I've known him for like, 48 hours, he's a wannabe friend!"
Whirlmist rolled his eyes, then gazed down at the landscape below. "Oh, let's land." He folded in his wings, and swiftly plummeted down, catching himself before he broke a bone though.
Storm more daintily landed beside him. "So... is there anything I should know about the very important SeaWing royal family?"
"Well..." Whirlmist curled a wing to put under his chin. "There's Queen Auklet my mother, My father, his name is Octopus... and I guess my sister Ray."
Storm tried to plant the names in her mind. "Yes, yes. Now, let's go." She stepped into the foaming waves, then leaped back.
"Cold!" She cried, her wings flaring. "How do you stand it?" She asked as Whirlmist waded in.
"You'll get used to it." Chuckled the SeaWing, diving in, and resurfacing a moment later, his eyes teasing.
"Okay, okay! I am coming!" She bounded in after him, wincing at the freezing seawater.
She saw him dive in, and she went after him. She was amazed that her eyes didn't burn in the saltwater, and relished the sights of the dropping sand.
She swam after Whirlmist, spinning gleefully. He turned to her, flashing his scales in an arranged pattern that Storm didn't understand.
Whirlmist laughed silently and swam up to the surface. "Sorry, didn't know you don't know Aquatic."
Storm blinked. "Oh, well, let's keep going." She dove back down, folding in her wings and heading for the depths.
Whirlmist passed her, a teasing glint in his eyes; he flashed her his tail scales and dove deeper.
Storm flashed the scales next to her eyes, hoping she wasn't saying something fowl. She flashed the scales along her back, belly, and tail, before Whirlmist stared at her and pulled her back up to the surface.
"Why'd you call me a Dolphin with a RainWing head?" He asked, sounding confused.
Storm giggled. "What? Okay then, apparently your scales are very complicated." She nudged him and dove back into the water.
Despite the laughter, Storm's belly felt sick. Was she leading him on a fake scavenger chase?
