chapter eight

The cave mouth was larger then Jade Mountain's. There was jagged rocks sticking out from it, like a SkyWing's teeth. I'm perspective it was...

Terrifying.

It yawned furiously at the two, and she saw Whirlmist trembling with a dazed fear, and quite honestly, she felt the same.

The SeaWing-thing uncertainty paddles forward, even though her instincts were telling her to turn tail and flee.

Storm peered into the murky depths. She pulled herself into the cave, motioning for the Prince to follow.

Whirlmist swam next to her, his eyes wide and nervous. He brightened his scales shakily, his talons trembling.

Storm passed him a reassuring glance, then began to swim upward, curling her wings and bursting towards the surface.

An air-gap was located above the cave, a lean one, but just enough to take a breath or two. She pushed herself faster up, feeling like she was drowning.

Whirlmist swam beside her, his eyes anxious. His pupils flitted from side to side, and his wings were curved awkwardly.

Once they surfaced, Whirlmist shook water droplets from his face. His eyes darkened as he glanced behind them as if a rabid shark was coming to pop his fins off.

"It's probably somewhere unpredictable and hard to get." He announced, lofting his head in a curved motion. "Somewhere mystic."

Storm's eyes widened and her jaw slacked. "Really? Like... underwater?" She snorted out a flood of bubbles, her eyes amused.

Whirlmist flattened his ears and hissed. "Very funny. Now, follow me." He dove back into the cold water, and Storm followed, shivering.

He was headed straight down, right where any dragon would look, because everything is always hidden in the scariest, darkest, most frightening place- right?

Storm hissed to herself, grabbed his tail, and began to tow him up. This is exactly where not to go! She dug in her talons and spiraled upward.

His scales flashed indignantly, but she towed on, she needed to give this Prince a stern talking to.

When they emerged, he spat furiously at her, his scales a bioluminescent blue. "What's your issue, SkyWing?"

Storm bristled. "What's my issue? Your stupid slug-face, that's it! This is my mission!" She flashed her scales back at him.

The Prince flared his gills at her. "Well I-" he was cut of by a low creaking sound, like a dragon on breaking wood.

His voice caught in his throat, and he was trembling from nose to tail tip. "What was that." He whispered.

Storm blinked slowly. A shape was producing from behind him. Upon a slab of stone a weary-looking dragon was stumbling forward, it's jaws parted in an inhuman angle.

"W-Whirlmist." She stuttered, her eyes wide as the dragon stumbled closer. "Turn around."

The Prince gave her a wide-eyed look, then slowly, like his talons were made of ice, he turned his head.

Then his jaw slackened. His eyes turned to tiny pebbles. His tongue curled, then grew limp. "It's him." Was all he uttered.

Storm was confused. "Who..." She asked, flattening her ears to her head. "...is he?"

She now noticed the dragon was dragging one of his talons, as if it was injured and he could not heal. He was dragging himself forward, and now she could see his scales.

They were a faded pink, with unusual yellow scales looping around his eyes. His belly was a sea-urchin black, and his eyes were yellow, with some sort of white film glazed over them, and his injured talon...

Wasn't even there.

There was no injured talon, in fact, he had only two, a left back, a front right. It was a wonder how he walked.

Whirlmist stuttered, his eyes like misty pools. "S-s-sonar." He stuttered. "It's Sonar."

Storm felt a shiver run through her as the name was mentioned. She didn't know who this Sonar was, but his name was like a knife at her neck.

"Quick! Jump in the water!" Storm was dragged into the depths, the breath knocked out to her as she saw the water turn from blue to green, then to blue again, then to midnight black.

This isn't going to help. She thought. That dragon is a SeaWing, he'll come right in after us.

She flashed her scales brightly at him, but he flung his wings around her to cover the light. He gave her an appalling stare that shut her up.

They floated gently there for a moment, fear cracking through the water like lightning in a storm. The silence felt like an ox on Storm's shoulders, and she nervously looked around.

Then Whirlmist began to swim up, his ears back. His wings curled in, and he kicked with a determined ferocity. Storm followed uncertainty behind, what was so special about this exact moment?

He poked up his head, but she stayed right under the surface, staring under them. She felt as if a great monster was lurking underneath them, coming closer every second.

Then she was thrust up into the air, Whirlmist beside her. He flung open his wings and hovered, widening his eyes to her to do the same. She uncertainly flared out her wings, hovering beside him.

"What are we doing?" She hissed, looking around. Sonar wasn't around.

"Just do it." Snapped Whirlmist, flicking his tail crossly. "I've read a bit, I'm not a daft-headed toad face like you sell me as."

Storm blinked anxiously, but nodded, keeping her wings out, though they were tiring fast. She still wasn't used to the sight of looking like Whirlmist- or like a SeaWing for that mater.

Then in a sudden instant something hit her. She was wearing the dreamvisitor!

She blinked at Whirlmist, motioning to the amulet around her neck. "It's a dreamvistor." She hissed, blinking excitedly.

He glared at her. "And what use is that?" He snapped. "It's like, the afternoon! Nobody is sleeping!"

He had a point.

"Fine, fine." She sighed. "So much for helping." The Prince shot her a set glare, and she flinched. She was trying to be helpful.

"There!" Suddenly, Whirlmist dived for a pink tail, his eyes alight with a fiery excitement. The tail moved, and a furious SeaWing met his eyes. It roared in fury and lunged at him.

Whirlmist dodged, and dived behind the SeaWing, then over it, then to the side. He grabbed a pink satchel around its side, and flung it to Storm, who absently caught it.

She stared at it, her mind raving. "What do I do?" She asked finally, seeing the enraged pink dragon shoot out his wings and start racing towards her.

"SWIM!"

He is going to follow us! She thought, but obeyed, launching into the current, her heart beating like a SandWing's drum.

She burrowed deep into the water, then turned her face up to see Whirlmist swimming after her.

She saw a dark shape circling the water above, like a hawk. Why won't he come down?

The Prince shoved her, nodding the the pink burden in her claws. She nodded and opened it, at once a flurry of ink spilled out, followed by a fragment of parchment and a broken pen.

He flashed his scales, giving her light to read the smudging ink form the paper.

Congratulations young one, you have found your deadly sky. But your next clue will only be knee high.

That made no sense. She thought, turning the page over, then shoving it back in the pink satchel. We have to leave.

She began swimming away, Whirlmist nervously behind her. They exited the dark cave, hearing hoarse cries from the inside.

"Come back! That's mine! Come back!" The voice was like talons on a chalkboard. It sent shivers down both of their spines, and made Whirlmist tremble.

They went faster, trying to leave the Crash behind. But Sonar's words still rang in her skull. Come back! That's mine!

Why did he have the clue? And... why was he pink? She had so many unrelated questions.

Whirlmist led her up towards the lighter water, and she spread out her wings, relishing the thoughts of being a normal SkyWing again.

They burst out fo the water, spraying droplets everywhere. Storm felt happiness and relief wash over her like a rainstorm, and she immediately soared for shore, her heart flying with her.

Whirlmist darted after her, his eyes bright. "We have to get to the Academy." He hissed, blinking at her.

She nodded, taking a turn. "I'll be glad to just feel solid ground under my talons again."

The Prince nodded, then began to fly faster. His pretty blue scales shining in the hot sun.

Oh no. Storm thought to herself. Please no... I still look like him.

She stared at her wings in despair. "Whirlmist... I still look like you!" He turned his head to her.

"I guess you'll have to tell your Animus boyfriend that you need a bit of a makeover." He chuckled, spinning in a circle, then smiling at her.

They arrived at Jade Mountain minutes later. The entrance was empty, except for a few dragons sweeping through in between their last classes.

Storm quietly walked through the hall, her wings tucked close to her side. Seafoam. Seafoam. Your name is Seafoam. She thought to herself, her mind racing.

Then all the dragons disappeared, and Storm heard a shocked gasp from Whirlmist.

She turned quickly, bristling. What was wrong? She moved her eyes to where Whirlmist was staring, and gasped as well.

A dead SandWing lay, sprawled out like prey, right in front of them.
