The Funeral (part one)
The weather was cold and overcast on the day of the funeral. June Heath was Sable Weihl-Reis's niece. She was living away at school in Cleveland and nobody knew what she was doing in town on the night of her death. Being a young woman from Zephyr, many people showed up to the funeral and a lot of them came to the grave site as well.
Zephyr City Cemetery sat beside the oldest Church in town. There were many old graves in a graveyard next to the now empty church building. There were hundreds of Ohio Volunteer Infantry men's graves from the civil war. Although there were never any battles fought near Zephyr, a lot of the men who worked in the old bell-works then and the nearby carriage factory served in the war.
As Runa stood there among the crowd she imagined watching a civil war era funeral. The union soldiers stood at solemn attention behind the crowd. Ladies in long dark gowns dyed black, stood with black fans and black hats. One of the women had a spot of white near the hem of her dress that the dye had missed. At least this was what Runa was thinking. She had read a lot about Civil War time history.
In reality the town's people didn't seem too far removed from those days themselves. They seemed stuck as it were, in their small town. Even the younger generation had not completely cut the strings that held them. They used facebook and text and spoke differently but, the truth is that they were old souls. Everyone in this town had a depth about them and a kind of heaviness. Everyone except Runa's friend, Mendalie, that is.
She was so light and free. She could pick up the mood of any room just by entering it. She even brought a sense of peace to this dark day. That's why Runa loved her so much. She could always make Runa laugh. Even here it was difficult to hold her composure when she looked at Mendalie who was desperately holding back a grin. Who grins at a funeral? Must just be a nervous response to death, Runa thought.
Nothing could keep Runa happy long though.Finding that girl in the park was so disturbing. And then she had to spend halfthe night at the police station with that stoic and cold man, Officer Benton. She had to go over her story so many times and repeat the details of why shewas in the park. They didn't believe her about sleepwalking until they calledher mom and Dr. Ravensdale. Then Brian got there and he was so upset about thewhole thing too. But all Runa could think about was that poor girl.
