Kay Wilkes was looking out the window of the principal's office. She was watching a light snow falling outside. The school was on the west side of town. It was still so new to her even after two graduating classes. She was secretly hoping the snow might become a blizzard and hold back the students return on Monday.

"Kay," Mr. Eckle said. He was one of the older teachers. He was a junior high history teacher. She turned and saw him standing outside the office door. "Did they get the supplies I ordered yet?"

"Not yet, Mr. Eckle," Kay informed him. "I'm sure they'll come in today."

He nodded and turned to go, but stopped himself. "Is Dan coming in today?"

"No. He took a longer break. He'll be back on Monday."

"Lucky bastard," Mr. Eckle said.

"Indeed," Kay said.

Dan was the principal now. He was so young. She thought Mr. Eckle was probably his eighth grade teacher. He should've retired years ago.

The phone began to ring in the other room. Kay went to answer it.

"Hello?" she said. "Yes, of course. I will. I'll be here. It's big enough. You could get two hundred tables, easy. Sure. Okay. I'll see you then."

She hung up the phone.

"Who was that?" Patty asked. Patty was the art teacher. She had just walked in.

"Just Ava Madison," Kay told her. "The Ladies' Book Club is getting the fundraiser together."

"Oh? Do you want help with decorations again?" she asked.

"I'm sure we will," Kay answered.

"Great, just let me know," Patty told her.

"Okay."

Finally the day was drawing to a close. These days were so long. There wasn't that much to prepare now. She went to the ladies' room and started doing her hair and make-up. She was thin. She had loose curls in her shoulder-length dark brown hair. She brushed through it and stopped to smile at herself in the mirror.

"Thank you, doctor," she said. "Thank you, doctor." She paused and looked at the mirror, saying seductively, "Doctor." She kept repeating herself and trying out different smiles and poses.

Shefinally left, putting on her coat and grabbing her purse.
