Subtleties and Sweets
By 2:00, the fair was hopping. People walked all along the streets. They didn't stop at every booth. In fact, they usually only went to a couple. Most of them just wanted the festival food. Kids played the games or rode the rides, such as they were. Some brought their pets with them and stopped at Runa's booth. They did very well actually. Asking Mendalie to help was a genius idea.
"Don't wait to get Fido fixed! We can help you!" Mendalie said loudly to the crowd of passers-by. "If Morris is scratching up your new sofa, we can help!"
Runa was busy helping people fill out registration forms and making appointments for pets. And Mendalie was bringing them in.
"Spin the wheel for Spot and get a free exam! You got to spin it to win it!" Mendalie yelled while doing a dance. They were one of the busiest booths besides the food carts.
Runa couldn't help but laugh at her friend. They were working but they were having a good time.
Betty Chapel's booth was quite busy too. She was a pretty divorcee. She took time to do her hair up today. Normally, at the bakery she had it pulled back. So many people were buying food and even though there were other places to get cupcakes, it was no secret that most people preferred hers.
"Oh I love this one with the lips on it. What is it again?" Mrs. Ava Madison asked her.
"That's called 'Shut up and Kiss Me!' It's made with a cherry vanilla ganache in a light pomegranate cake with a white chocolate butter-cream frosting and topped with a pair of sugar lips.
"You are so creative Betty," Ava Madison told her. "I'll take a box of them."
"Thank you," she said.
"Betty, we need to know if you will be able to cater deserts at the fundraiser again this year."
"Of course I will! I love doing it!" Betty told her.
"Good," Ava told her, "After all, we must give every effort for our sisters first; right?"
Betty looked at her sheepishly. "Yes."
"Yes indeed" she said smiling at her. "I like you Betty. I always have."
"Thank you."
"Are you doing alright by the way?" Ava asked her.
"Alright?" she asked.
"Do you need anything? How can the sisters help you through this distressing time?"
"Oh I'm okay," Betty told her. "I mean, I'll be okay. No one ever wants to go through it."
"No," she said, "Certainly but, you don't have to go through it alone, dear."
"Thank you Ava."
"Well these cupcakes are amazing. I have to tell everyone to come get some."
Betty smiled. Ava walked away with her box ofcupcakes and Betty's smile changed as she watched Ava go.
