Sable
The Carriage and Bell Museum was just that in the beginning but, the local historical societies with the help and direction of its primary curator, Sable Weihl-Reis, had expanded greatly. Sable was instrumental in collecting and preserving so many of the County's great historical and natural treasures over the last twenty years since her husband passed.
Together, they had been at the forefront of many archaeological discoveries over the years. She began as a field worker for the same company as her husband. He was a renowned scientist and an expert in his field, even when she first met him. He was also 15 years older than her.
The work they did led them to discover more than they had ever anticipated. But none of that would have happened if she wasn't first intrigued to research ancient civilizations because of the town of Zephyr, itself. There, her own family had strong ties to a mysterious past. It was a daunting task to uncover the secrets they left her and to keep covered the ones that they entrusted her with.
Sable was busy cataloging a new shipment that had arrived on Friday. The museum was closed today. Sunday was the only day it was closed during the festival and she could finally get some work done. There was some excitement over a discovery of human bones on Friday night but she couldn't think about that now.
There were a lot of things she could not think about right now. She didn't want to think about the bones, or what they might mean. She didn't want to spend any more time acting like a silly girl about that insufferable Mayor. She didn't have time to worry about why her niece was in the park that night when she died. She did not want to spend any more time on that feeling scratching the back of her subconscious about Runa Walker but, all of these thoughts were continually plaguing her as she tried to do her work.
"Ellie," she said audibly. "Why the hell did we have to bring her into the book club? Traditions, be damned! But it is one way to keep an eye on her. Another way is..."
She walked out of the warehouse, which was full of shelves, full of items, not currently on display. She went in her small office and shut the door. She picked up the phone and dialed.
"Andy? It's Sable. Do you have anything for me?" There was a short pause and then she sighed. "Well, we need to find a way to control the situation then. I don't know exactly but if there's one thing I do know, this universe has a way of working things out. Keep me updated. And I'm sorry about the way things went for you. Women can be stubborn. It's one of our good and bad qualities. Okay. Goodbye."
When she got off the phone she looked at an oddsculpture on her desk. It was an old depiction of something like the devil. Ithad two horns but one was partially broken off. She picked it up and looked atit. "What are YOU staring at?" she asked it.
