Grendel Instead of Grable

"It's not us, exactly Grant. It's just what we know, or rather, what we knew. Many of the secrets have been lost; years ago now."

"But you came from England. You're not from here," he said.

"No, I'm not. But my parents' family was. They were Smiths; Bell-smiths, to be exact. They moved to Germany before Hitler came to power and were doctors. They were chosen by the society to represent them. There were so many advances in medicine then. But they didn't agree with the Eugenics movement of the day."

"What Society chose them?"

"Grant. There are things in this world that are difficult to understand. There are some people who try to find answers to these things. Sometimes they do it for the right reasons and sometimes they don't. And sometimes they do it for the right reasons but they still end up hurting people."

"This Society was like that?"

"Yes. There were good people in it and people who weren't so good."

"Nazis?" he asked.

"No not Nazis. The Nazis wanted to control the Society and use it. They wanted to find us but our families were too smart for them."

"So what happened?"

"My original name is not Ravensdale. My grandparents were hunted down because of their name. They were one of the prominent couples in the Society. And the Nazis captured them. They were residents of a concentration camp for awhile but with help they eventually escaped to England."

"I was born in England but your great aunt, Laurel raised me after the Nazis found my parents and murdered them when I was 12." Ellie lowered her head as tears welled up in her eyes. Grant stood there in disbelief a moment.

"Grandma! You told me they died of old age," he said.

"Well, you were too young to know the truth."

"I thought the Nazis were defeated in World War II," he said.

"Well, Nazis are what they posed as but Aunt Laurel knew the truth. They were something else; something quite evil."

"What do you mean by 'evil'?"

"I mean just that. Do you remember a few years ago when the whole town was going crazy and you were having bad nightmares?"

"I remember one night that was really bad and you gave me that statue of the Virgin Mary and told me to pray."

"Yes, that's when it was going on. You were pretty young still."

"What does that have to do with our family?"

"I don't understand it exactly myself," Eleanor admitted. "But whoever they are, they were involved in the occult."

"So what happened after they killed your parents? What happened to you and aunt Laurel?"

"She managed to hide from them and brought me to America when I was 17. They never knew about me because we changed our name."

"What was your name?"

"Grendel," she told him. "But you can never repeat that."

"So it's Grendel instead of Grable?" He asked.

"Yes. My Aunt said it would be an easy change because it sounded close enough when we came to America that they didn't really question it when we said they misspelled our name."

"That's why Grable is your maiden name."

"That's why," Ellie told him.
