Between the Cracks
"Runa," the voice said from the basement.
She lay there in the dark, in her room as it called to her.
"Runa"
"Shut up! Just shut up! You're not real! Just go away!" She put the pillow over her head tightly.
"Runa"
"Ahhhhh!" Runa yelled, jumping up from the bed and going into her bathroom. She opened the pharmacy bag on the counter and pulled out the bottle of pills. She opened it and popped one in her mouth. She turned on the water and filled a paper cup. She drank the pill down quickly.
"There! This better work," she said. "I can't do this anymore." She stood there looking at the mirror.
The other Runa looked back and smiled. "I knew you'd do it. You're just too weak." The word cut like a knife - Weak. She picked up her curling iron and smashed the mirror. The other Runa laughed in between the cracks at her.
Runa ran down the stairs to the stoop.
"Runa," the voice said.
"Shut up! Do you hear me? You are not real! Just shut the hell up!"
The voice went quiet. She stood there for a minute, listening. It didn't speak.
She walked back up the stairs and it was quiet, finally.
She went back into the bathroom and started picking up small shards of the mirror out of the sink.
The other Runa was gone.
