Betty
On the other side of town, the courthouse sat on 2nd street south. It was an old brick building with tall windows and a belfry. The window frames and belfry were painted white and the belfry's little roof was adorned by a strange sphere. The roof had many small obelisks on it as well. The sidewalk was wide leading to the front few stairs and small entry roof held by two meager pillars.
A few people came and went in and out of the front doors. Two women were walking out together. One of them was Betty Chapel who owns the cupcake bakery, 'Sweet Temptations'. The other woman had red hair that was pulled back. She wore glasses and was much shorter than Betty.
"Wow!" the short lady told her, "You let them have it."
"I had to," Betty explained, "after what he's put me through; I deserve some compensation and some sanity."
The two women kept walking toward the square in the middle of town.
"Thank you for coming with me," Betty told her"
"Oh it was my pleasure. I know what you've been through and I wanted to see him squirm. He deserves it."
"Although I think he should have had it worse. My lawyer was too quick to make a deal, I think."
"Really," Tina asked. "You think you could've gotten more?"
"I don't know," Betty admitted, "But I would've liked to try." The women passed the old fire station and a young man came running out. He had on jeans and a dark blue t-shirt with some kind of fireman's logo on it.
"Betty!" he yelled.
The women stopped and turned as he caught up to them.
Stopping in front of her and smiling from ear to ear he asked, "Well?"
He was clean cut and well built. He had light brown hair and brown eyes.
Smiling at him she nodded. He immediately grabbed her up in his arms and hugged her.
"Finally!" he said and setting her back down, he kissed her. Then he kissed her some more.
"Get a room," the redhead told them.
"Got one," he said and picked Betty up to carry her into the fire station.
Betty screamed out. "Mark! Put me down! I have to get to the shop."
"You better not be planning on working late. I'm almost done. I've been here long enough without you."
"I don't have any special orders until tomorrow afternoon," Betty told him, "and Tina is closing tonight."
Mark looked at the redhead. "You are?"
"Maybe," Tina told him.
Mark put Betty down. "She is," Betty said, giving Tina a look.
Tina grinned at her. "I guess so."
"Great," Mark said, "okay, got to go."
"Okay," Betty said.
Betty watched him until he disappeared into the fire station. "Now I know what I was missing."
"What?" Tina asked.
"Oh; it's nothing. Just something Ellie said to me once." Betty sighed. She looked at Tina again. "Well, those Avocado cupcakes won't bake themselves."
"Right," Tina answered her,reluctantly.
