Approaching Storm
It was a slow start. The window at Sweet Temptations felt one drop and then another and then a couple more as Tina sat there looking out of it. "Uh Oh," she said. "Here it comes."
Tina stood up and started barking directions to the other girls in the bakery.
"We got to move! Get the boxes. Hurry up!"
They had to get to the square and box up most of the cupcakes at the booth before it poured down on them.
The Sweet Temptations bakery girls came running into the square and saw that Betty was already covering everything. She waved frantically as they ran toward her and everyone tossed cupcakes into the boxes. As soon as they got them into the boxes and under the tables, it started to pour. Other vendors were closing their tents and reinforcing the sides.
Festival goers ran quickly for the shops or their cars. Many opened umbrellas they had ready. It was an organized chaos. It always was, even though they knew what to do. They just never knew exactly when this Ohio weather would turn on them.
Tina ran back with a couple of wheel carts and they piled the boxes on them in the rain, covering them with a tarp. Everyone was soaking wet and pushing the carts back toward the bakery.
"Tina!" Betty yelled. "Grab the money box." Tina ran back to the tent and went inside. She looked under the table and found the money box. She also saw an envelope laying there getting wet so she grabbed it and tucked it into her jacket pocket.
They made it back to the bakery without too much damage. One of the boxes didn't get shut all the way. Luckily, it was the last one they used and it only had two dozen cupcakes in it. They were ruined but the rest were fine.
"Whew!" Betty said, sitting down. "That was crazy." One of the girls handed her a towel. "Thank you," Betty told her and began to dry her hair off.
Tina went into the back to get a towel and couldn't find anymore. So she went into the bathroom for a couple of paper towels, at least. She removed her jacket to start drying off and the envelope fell out. She closed the door and picked it up. It was already open so she thought she would just take a peek.
But when she started reading it, she couldn't stop. Her eyes grew wide as she read. Apparently Betty lied to her. She didn't get anything in the divorce at all. She had agreed to a clean break. Why would she do that?
"Tina?" Betty called. Tina quickly hid the letter. She walked out, drying her hair.
"Oh," Betty said, "You can go home dear. The girls put everything in the cooler and we can clean up everything tomorrow."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes," Betty told her. "There's areal storm coming. I want to get home before it hits."
