chapter 5

Natasha's POV

The moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting  glow across the room. Despite the lingering remnants of the nightmare, I felt a strange sense of peace knowing that Aries was nearby. She had been my rock, my protector, and now, with our newfound connection, she felt even closer.

I rose from bed and moved to the mirror, studying my reflection. The dark circles under my eyes told the tale of sleepless nights and constant vigilance. Yet, today felt different. I felt a renewed determination to face the day, to reclaim some semblance of normalcy.

After a quick shower and a change of clothes, I headed to the common area where Aries was already awake, her eyes sharp and alert. She gave me a small nod, her silent way of acknowledging my presence. I couldn’t help but smile at her, appreciating her unwavering dedication.

"We have classes today," I said, breaking the silence. "We should try to keep things as normal as possible."

Aries nodded again, but I could see the concern in her eyes. She was always on high alert, always ready to spring into action. It was both comforting and a little daunting.

As we walked to the Academy, the campus was coming alive with students heading to their morning classes. The usual hustle and bustle seemed surreal after the events of the previous night. I tried to push the nightmare to the back of my mind, focusing instead on the mundane chatter of my peers.

In our first class, History of Magic, I tried to concentrate on the lecture, but my mind kept drifting back to Aries. I found myself glancing at her often, wondering about the story she had yet to tell me. There was so much I didn’t know about her, about the sacrifices she had made and the reasons behind them.

After class, I managed to catch her alone. "We need to talk," I said softly.

Aries nodded, and we found a quiet corner in the library. She looked at me, her expression unreadable.

"Why did you pretend to be mute?" I asked, needing to understand.

She sighed, her eyes meeting mine with a mix of vulnerability and resolve. "It started when I was very young," she began, her voice low and steady. "My family was involved in some dangerous activities, and they thought it would be safer if I pretended to be mute. It made me less of a target, less noticeable."

I listened intently, my heart aching for the girl she must have been, forced into silence for her own protection.

"It became a habit. My new identity that continued well I to my adulthood," she continued. "And when I became your guardian, it seemed like the safest option. I didn't want to draw unnecessary attention to myself or to you."

I reached out, taking her hand in mine. "You don't have to pretend anymore. With me, you can be yourself. I like hearing you talk."

Aries nodded, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Thank you, Natasha. But there are still dangers we need to be aware of."

"I understand," I said. "But I promise, I won't tell anyone your secret. You're safe with me."

As the day went on, we attended our classes, blending in with the other students. Yet, the bond between us felt stronger, an unspoken understanding that we were in this together.

Later that evening, we returned to the suite. I could see the exhaustion in Aries' eyes, and I knew she needed rest as much as I did. But there was still one more thing we needed to discuss.

"Alessandra," I began, hesitating slightly. "About the shadow-kissed bond... I need to know everything. How can we manage it? How can we keep each other safe?"

Aries took a deep breath, her expression serious. "We need to be vigilant. The bond can be both a strength and a weakness. We can sense each other's emotions, sometimes even thoughts. It's important to stay grounded, to communicate openly."

I nodded, absorbing her words. "And the darkness? How do we fight it?"

"Together," she said firmly. "We support each other, remind ourselves of what's real. The darkness feeds on fear and isolation. We can't let it win."

I reached out and hugged her, feeling the warmth and strength of her presence. "Thank you, Aries. For everything."

She hugged me back, and for a moment, the weight of our shared burdens felt a little lighter.

As we settled in for the night, I found myself reflecting on the events of the day. Despite the challenges ahead, I felt a sense of hope. With Aries by my side, I knew we could face whatever came our way.

I glanced at her, sitting vigil by the window as usual. "Good night, Alessandra."

"Good night, Natasha," she replied, her voice soft but strong.

As I drifted off to sleep, I knew that our bond would be both our greatest strength and our greatest challenge. But with Aries by my side, I felt ready to face the future, whatever it might bring.

The next morning dawned bright and early. I felt a sense of anticipation, knowing that today, Aries and I would take the first steps towards unraveling the mystery of my family's death and confronting the darkness that threatened us both.

After breakfast, we prepared for another day of classes. The routine was familiar, but now, every moment felt charged with new significance. I felt more aware of my surroundings, more attuned to the subtle currents of danger that lurked beneath the surface of our everyday lives.

As we walked to our first class, Aries leaned in close, her voice barely a whisper. "Stay alert. We don't know who we can trust."

I nodded, appreciating her caution. We moved through the day with a heightened sense of awareness, every interaction scrutinized for hidden threats.

In my  Advanced Combat class the teacher asked Aries to do a demonstration for us.

At first Aries had said no but after me convincing her that I would be ok and that I would be ok she agreed to do it.

I watched as she demonstrated her formidable skills, her movements fluid and precise. I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride watching her. She was more than my guardian; she was my ally, my friend.

After the class, I pulled her aside. "There's something else I need to tell you," I said, my voice low. "About the night my family was killed."

Aries looked at me, her expression encouraging. "I'm listening."

Taking a deep breath, I recounted the events as I remembered them. "There was a moment, just before the attack, when I felt something... strange. A presence, a sense of impending doom. It was like I knew something terrible was about to happen."

Aries listened intently, her eyes narrowing in thought. "That could be part of your connection to the spirit realm. Your sensitivity to the supernatural."

I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety. "We need to find out more about this. About how to use it, how to control it."

"We will," Aries promised. "We'll find answers, together."

As the day drew to a close, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. With Aries by my side, I was ready to face the challenges ahead. We would uncover the truth, confront our enemies, and protect each other from the darkness that sought to consume us.

And together, we would find a way to reclaim our lives, one step at a time.
