chapter 10

Aries POV

I woke with a start, my heart pounding in my chest, a sense of foreboding lingering in the air. Natasha’s warmth was gone, and as I blinked the sleep from my eyes, I saw that she wasn’t beside me. Panic surged through me, and I instinctively reached for my silver stake she said I should I carry at all times since it was the only thing that could kill a strigoi and i also grabbed my gun

The room was still bathed in the pale light of early morning, but something felt wrong. My mind raced, replaying the events of the day before—the prophecy, the ancient texts, Professor Devereux’s cryptic insights. Natasha had been restless, and I knew she hadn’t been able to shake the feeling that we were missing something crucial.

I slipped out of bed, my feet silent on the cold floor. The door was ajar, and a faint flicker of light from the hallway caught my eye. I crept toward it, my senses on high alert, and peeked out. The corridor was dimly lit, but I could make out shadows moving further down, heading toward the library.

A sharp knock had awakened me, followed by hushed voices. My heart sank as I realized Natasha must have left to investigate. I gripped the hilt of my stake tighter, determination fueling my steps as I followed the shadows.

As I approached the library, the air grew heavier, charged with an unseen tension. The door was slightly open, and I could hear murmurs from inside. I slipped through the gap, careful to stay hidden in the shadows. My eyes adjusted to the dim light, and I saw Professor Devereux and Natasha huddled over an ancient tome. Their expressions were grave, and Devereux’s voice was urgent.

“This,” he said, pointing to a passage filled with symbols and cryptic text, “speaks of a traitor among us. Someone who will betray the shadow-kissed.”

My blood ran cold. A traitor? Among us? I strained to hear more, my mind racing with possibilities. Who could it be? Could we trust anyone?

Before I could process the implications, the lights in the library flickered and went out, plunging us into darkness. A cold, menacing voice echoed through the room, sending chills down my spine.

“You should have stayed in bed, Natasha.”

I tensed, my heart pounding as I peered into the darkness. Shadows coalesced around us, taking on sinister forms. One of them stepped forward, its eyes gleaming like obsidian.

“The prophecy was clear,” it said, its voice dripping with malice. “The shadow-kissed will fall, and with her, the world.”

My breath caught in my throat as the figure lunged at Professor Devereux. He barely managed to block the attack with a burst of light magic, and the room exploded into chaos. I couldn’t stay hidden any longer.

With a burst of adrenaline, I sprang from the shadows, my dagger ready. The shadowy assailants were everywhere, their forms shifting and menacing. I fought my way to Natasha’s side, our bond pulsing with urgency and fear.

“Aries!” Natasha shouted, relief and determination in her voice. “We need to get out of here!”

But the shadows were relentless. They surrounded us, their dark tendrils reaching for us with malevolent intent. Professor Devereux fought valiantly, but I could see he was tiring. We had to find a way to break free.

“Hold on!” I shouted to Natasha, gripping her hand tightly. I focused on the bond between us, drawing strength from it. Together, we could overcome this. We had to.

As if sensing our resolve, the shadows intensified their assault. One of them lunged at me, and I barely managed to dodge, my stake slicing through its form. The shadow hissed and recoiled, but more took its place.

“Devereux!” I called out, my voice strained. “There has to be a way to stop them!”

He nodded, sweat glistening on his forehead. “The prophecy… there’s a ritual. It can banish the shadows, but it requires both of you.”

Natasha and I exchanged a glance, our determination unwavering. “Tell us what to do,” Natasha said, her voice steady.

Devereux hurried to a nearby shelf, pulling out another ancient tome. He flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the text quickly. “Here,” he said, pointing to a passage. “You must recite this incantation together. It will channel your combined power to dispel the shadows.”

We nodded, our resolve firm. We began reciting the incantation, our voices blending in harmony. The shadows seemed to writhe in response, their forms flickering and weakening.

But just as hope began to rise within me, a new figure emerged from the darkness—a figure cloaked in shadows, yet exuding a familiar presence. My heart sank as recognition dawned.

“alexei,” I whispered, my voice trembling with shock and betrayal.

He stepped forward, his eyes cold and unyielding. “Yes, Aries. It’s me. The traitor you’ve been searching for.”

Natasha’s grip tightened on my hand, her anger palpable. “Why, alexei? Why would you betray us? Betray me?

He sneered, his expression twisted with malice. “Because the prophecy must be fulfilled. The shadow-kissed must fall for the world to be reborn.”

Before we could react, he raised his hand, and the shadows surged forward with renewed ferocity. We fought desperately, but they were too many, too strong. I felt their cold tendrils wrap around me, dragging me down into darkness.

As the world faded, my last thought was of Natasha. Our bond pulsed with one final, desperate plea for survival. And then, everything went black.

***

I awoke to pain. My body ached, and I felt a coldness that seemed to seep into my very bones. I opened my eyes to find myself in a dark, cavernous space. Shadows danced on the walls, and I realized with a jolt that I was alone. Natasha was nowhere to be seen.

Panic surged through me, but I forced myself to stay calm. I had to find her. I had to figure out what had happened. The last thing I remembered was Alexei’s betrayal and the overwhelming darkness.

I struggled to my feet, my legs shaking. The cavern was vast and seemed to stretch on endlessly. I had no idea where I was or how I had gotten here. But I knew one thing: I had to find Natasha. Our bond was still there, faint but present, guiding me through the darkness.

As I moved forward, I heard faint echoes—whispers that seemed to come from the shadows themselves. They spoke of despair and destruction, of a world teetering on the brink of annihilation. I tried to shut them out, focusing instead on the bond that connected me to Natasha.

After what felt like an eternity, I saw a faint light ahead. I hurried toward it, my heart pounding with hope and fear. As I approached, the light grew brighter, and I saw Natasha lying on the ground, her form illuminated by a soft, ethereal glow.

“Natasha!” I cried, rushing to her side. I knelt beside her, my hands shaking as I checked for signs of life. Relief flooded through me when I felt her pulse, faint but steady.

She stirred, her eyes fluttering open. “Alessandra?” she whispered, her voice weak.

“I’m here,” I said, tears of relief streaming down my face. “We’re going to be okay. We’ll find a way out of this. Together.”

She nodded weakly, her hand reaching for mine. “Together,” she echoed.

As we held each other, drawing strength from our bond, I knew that no matter what the shadows threw at us, we would face it together. The prophecy might have declared our doom, but we would rewrite our fate with every step we took, hand in hand.

With renewed determination, we rose to our feet, ready to face whatever lay ahead. The shadows might be powerful, but our bond was stronger. And together, we would find a way to banish the darkness and protect the world we loved.

The battle was far from over, but with Natasha by my side, I knew we stood a chance. Our journey was just beginning, and no prophecy, no shadow, could stand in our way.
