Jace never thought he would find himself in the same situation again. But, much to his surprise, he did.
He was in front of the Seelie Queen again, and in the same situation as before.
But this time, it wasn't him who was tied up. He was the one to choose.
'I can't believe you tricked us into this again'- He glared at the Seelie Queen, who he couldn't believe looked like a 13-year-old girl, but was more powerful than him and all the New York Institute combined. -'The vines again, really?'
The Seelie Queen just smiled one of her knowing smiles, the ones everyone she encountered hated with a passion. -'The vines are a method of protection. You came into my kingdom unannounced, Jace Herondale. And you have to be punished for it.'- She said calmly. Inside Jace's mind, the scene from the last time replayed over and over again.
Clary looked confused. It was her first time in the Seelie kingdom and the life of her boyfriend and Jace's was on her hands.
'The game isn't for me. It's for you, Clary.'-She took her time to explain.-'The kiss that will set them free is the kiss you most desire.'- The vines around the boys moved, and the could feel their scarred and scared breathing behind her.
'I suggest you move quickly'- Another one of those smiles. -'Once the vines reach their necks, they will be dead, dead, dead.'
Clary soon realized everything.
'Jace was wrong, this is exactly like middle school.'
'Clary'- Simon cut in the middle of her sentence.-'Just kiss me so we can go home'
Clary didn't have to be asked twice. She walked towards the boy with black hair, not without stealing a glance at Jace, who was having it even worse. She didn't hesitate to press a loving but untrue kiss to Simon's lips, surprised when the vines didn't retreat.
'Why are the vines still here?'-She asked in confusion. Both Simon and herself were out of their minds, but Jace wasn't. He knew everything.
'Why do you think?'- The Seelie Queen smiled.
'I did what you asked.'- But she received no answer. Just a knowing smile that meant more than words.
Clary looked back. Simon realized everything in a matter of seconds. Jace however, was concentrated in trying to not die choked by the vines.
'Clary'- He pleaded in silence. Clary was unsure.
She walked up to him, avoiding Simon's eyes on her. She knew she had to kiss Jace in order for them to escape the vines, she knew they would die if she didn't. However, he stared hard into the blonde's eyes.
'This means nothing'- She muttered under her breath, and Jace just had time to nod his head in agreement before Clary smashed her lips to his.
However, it was more than a normal kiss. The vines started moving, and they completely disappeared.
It was difficult to pull apart. They were forced to, anyway. They didn't belong to each other anymore. However, the vines did retrieve.
'You've been through this before, haven't you?'- The Seelie Queen asked knowingly.-'Just remember what happened last time.'
Jace was indecisive. Clary was tied up to one of the vines, that was for sure. But he never thought he would see Y/N in the same situation.
Y/N Y/L/N had a special place in Jace's heart. She was his first love, her family being the closest to the Lightwoods, meaning they had known each other since they were kids. She was the first girl he had really ever fallen in love with, and that would never change.
However, a redhead stole his heart when he was 20. A redhead unknown to the Shadow World, Clary Fairchild, who he drew her first rune on, falling in love instantly.
It was no news that Jace and Clary dated, but their relationship broke off easily. There were just so many things between them: people, situations, bonds.
And that's when Jace really wrapped his head around everything.
It was after a very important mission. Himself, Y/N, Izzy and Alec, the original four, had gone out, in the middle of the night, to the Brooklyn Bridge to fight off some major demons. Everything went smoothly, except the fact that one of the demons got into Y/N's body.
The demon was in control. Y/N was out of it. Trying to kill Jace, he was forced to watch Izzy electrocute Y/N before his own eyes. And when the demon came out, Y/N just collapsed into his arms, and Jace could swear he had never been so worried in his whole life. He spent countless nights in the infirmary hospital at the Institute when she was recovering: Alec and Izzy had never seen such a sight, Jace would stay entire nights beside her bedside, holding her hand tightly with his fingers intertwined with hers, his head resting on the edge of the bed. That week of recovery had been really intense for all of them.
After that week, it didn't take long for Y/N and Jace to understand that they were right for each other. And, to all of their friends' delight (even Clary, who was dating Simon at the time), they started dating.
Their relationship was perfect, it simply was. Their personalities just combined perfectly, bringing out the best in each other. Feisty, loving and badass, that was the couple they formed. Perfect.
His Y/N was tangled in the other set of vines, these ones doing much more harm that they were doing to Clary. The vines were rapidly wrapping around her neck, her face turning pale. She dropped her Seraph Blade to the floor due to the fact that the vile vines were squeezing her wrist too tight, and she dropped her head back to prevent choking.
'Jace, please.'- She pleaded in silence. Jace didn't hesitate. He cupped Y/N's face with his hands delicately, kissing her lips softly. The sparks were there, no hesitation allowed.
However, Y/N found herself still gasping for air.
Jace pulled away, looking at the ground. His hands dropped from Y/N's face, who looked defeated and surprised.
He turned to the Seelie Queen.
'The vines are still here.'- He said incredulously.
'Strange, the same thing happened the last time.'- The Seelie Queen was playing games with his mind. Meanwhile, Clary looked at the floor in embarrassment while Y/N tried to swallow back her tears.
Jace turned around, looking at how the vines were drawing the girls to death.
'Jace'- He heard Y/N's voice struggle. He looked into her now dull eyes.-'Just kiss her.'
Jace looked hesitantly at Clary, who just returned the look. However, Jace walked towards her, leant in, and kissed her.
It was an instant connection. There it was the same feeling again, of not knowing how to pull apart. The world around them was consumed.
Y/N breathed in defeat and in relief as the vines unravelled from her body. It was a beautiful sight, the beauty of her Y/H/C hair and her eyes closed as she threw her head back to feel the freedom as the vines left.
Jace and Clary pulled apart after a while. Jace looked guilty but very confused. Also, devastated. Even more than Y/N was.
'Y/N, this must be a mistake.'- Jace tried to explain himself while trying not to break the Seelie Queen's nose into pieces for putting them through this. He knew it wasn't right, he knew Y/N was the one he most desired. Something had gone wrong.
'The faeries don't lie, Jace.'- Y/N's voice, usually sweet and comforting, was now stone cold and determined. She reminded him of Izzy that time she stood up to her mother for the first time. But the tears were there. She looked at the Queen, who didn't have her smile on anymore. She looked guilty now.-'I want out of here.'
And with those words, and followed by two Seelie guards, she walked away from the castle, ready to find the portal to the Institute.
Jace and Clary exchanged a look of confusion. But Jace just shook his head, running in the direction Y/N had gone.
He and Clary made it to the Institute. There she was, Y/N training with Alec. She looked furious, sparring one blade after the other towards Alec, who dodged them with ease. However, Alec knew Y/N was angry, hurt, devastated, and needed to let off some steam, so he pushed her harder into her training.
Jace went into the training room. Alec saw him come in, and he barely dodged the Seraph Blade Y/N aimed at him, blocking it quickly, stopping in his tracks. Y/N looked at him, and then turned around to see Jace.
'What.'- She simply said. Jace sighed.
'I need to talk to you.'- And with those words, Alec left, not before patting his brother's shoulder, as if wishing him good luck.
'She's broken.'- Alec whispered beside him before leaving. -'Be careful.'
Jace just nodded, and watched as Alec left, before approaching Y/N, who was putting away her blade.
'Y/N, please. Listen.'
'There's nothing you need to explain, Jace. I've seen it all.'
'Y/N, the Seelie Queen pulled a fast one on me. The vines dissapeared when I kissed Clary because I technically returned the favour. I saved her life, just like she saved mine. But it was wrong, I know that, Y/N. Please believe me.'
'Clary is what you most desire, Jace.'- Y/N shook her head, tying her hair up in a tight ponytail. Jace took ahold of her hand, turning her around.
'No, it's you that I desire the most.'- He muttered under his breath. It was true. Y/N just looked at him.
'Look.'- He said.-'If you want me to prove you wrong, let's go back to the Seelie Kingdom tomorrow. Clary and I discussed this: I'll ask the Queen to tie you both up again. Then I will prove you wrong. Because when I kiss you, the vines will come off.'
Y/N looked uncertain.
'Y/N, babe, please. Just this time, trust me.'- Jace pleaded. Jace wasn't much of asking, so the petition took Y/N by surprise.-'If then you don't, I swear I'll back off.'
'Do the right thing this time.'- Jace warned the Seelie Queen. Indeed, this one had agreed to let Jace, Clary and Y/N back into her kingdom to be tied up again. This time around, however, Alec, Izzy and Simon had come along to act as both supporters and witnesses.
'I will, Jace Herondale.'-The Seelie Queen smiled knowingly.-'We have a deal.'
The sensation was all too known to Y/N already. The vines slithered through her body, trapping her arms and legs. Then, a pair of dark ones around her chest and neck, pulling a little tighter each time. Y/N's mind raced. She was scared. Scared that the same would happen for the second time.
'I think we all know how this works.'- The Seelie Queen said. -'The kiss that will set them free, is the kiss you most desire.'
Jace nodded. He snapped his head around when he heard both Clary and Y/N gasp for air. He looked at Y/N, face turning white and head thrown backwards. He looked at Alec and Izzy. They both nodded confidently.
He walked towards Y/N. Her eyes were fierce and defiant before his. She was trying to remain strong.
'I love you.'- He whispered, the whisper ghosting her lips. He proceeded to cup her face with his hands again, pressing the softest of kisses to her lips.
The feeling was like nothing he had ever felt before. Not only he could hear the vines unravelling, and the relieved sigh from Clary as she was set free, but the unbearable need to not pull away settled on his stomach and his heart. So he didn't.
He heard at a distance how Izzy high-fived Alec, and squealed in delight. But all he could focus on was Y/N, and their awaited kiss, and how she was wrapping her arms around him and kissing him back with such passion.
Suddenly, a burning sensation. Both Y/N and Jace pulled away out of breath with a gasp, as they both grabbed the side of their necks. Alec and Izzy gasped loudly.
'What was that?'- Y/N asked softly, looking at Jace.
All the others walked towards them.
'They're soulmate runes.'- Izzy explained in awe, her hand touching the rune on Y/N's neck slightly. Jace and Y/N immediately set eyes on each other's runes, the exact same ones in the same exact place.
'They're not very common.'- Alec followed suit.-'It just happens when two people who are soulmates are put through a very heart-wrenching situation. They're like Parabatai runes, but they're not drawn. They just appear.'
'Does this mean Y/N and Jace are soulmates?'- Simon asked, his hand in Clary's, whose head was on his shoulder.
'Yes.'- Izzy answered, looking at the couple with the brightest of smiles on her faces. Jace and Y/N were just looking into each other's eyes with so much reborn love. -'Jace and Y/N are soulmates.'
No one answered.
'We ought to leave them alone.'- Clary said knowingly, pulling the group with her.-'We'll wait for you at the Institute, guys.'
And with that, everyone left, leaving Jace and Y/N alone.
Jace took Y/N's hand.
'Do you believe me now?'- He asked worried, his hand slipping into her cheek, over the new rune. Y/N leant her head onto his hand.
'I do. I believe you, Jace.'- She said, a smile pulling at her lips. She watched as Jace took the last step towards her and leant down, before closing her eyes and kissing him back.
'Thank the Angel.'- Jace muttered against her lips after a few kisses.-'I don't think I can live without you, Y/N.'- He said, and Y/N stifled a giggle before he kissed her again.
