Prologue

I ponder as I scribble my thoughts about the cold peace on paper, slumping down on my rickety chair as it gives a creak of refusal. I've yet found it hard to concur with the council about the cold peace. I see the silhouette of a——— a thing on the door, illuminated by the light flooding into my room from the hallway. I get up from my chair in a hurry and run across the room to the door. Onto my left is a Drevak demon wobbling towards me, tentacles stretched in front of its slimy body. Its smoky eyes are narrowed into slits and is focused on something behind me. I suddenly turn back as I hear someone whimper.
"Olivia." I sigh with relief when I see the youngest of the Blackthorns crouched on the floor beside me with fear in her eyes, and the thought of what they'd just done infuriates me, pushing me to the point of violence.
"Who did it?" I raise my voice. "Who opened the door?" Livvy screams, and I turn back to face the demon who is now inches away from me. Its tentacles wrap around my ankles. I grab my seraph blade hanging behind the door and plunge it towards the demon's head. It wails before exploding into a cloud of black dust. I turn back to Livvy, who stands up weakly. "Who opened the bloody door?" I ask again.
"Tavvy did. He was playing with church, and church jumped out through the window, so Tavvy went out too," Oh, kill me now. Livvy sees the panick on my face and says, "He came back in and he's alright. Calm down, okay?" I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"I can't believe Tavvy ran after the cat. Where's Mark, by the way?"
"He went out with Emma."
"Why didn't he tell me?" I yell, pissed. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I don't want Emma dumping big brother. Plus, you're married, aren't you? You've passed his age. You've sneaked out of the institute with Jace, so you should know why he didn't tell you." Livvy smirks. I smile inwardly at her smart mouth. Mumbling "Whatever," I dart past the library and down the stairs.
Julian and Octavian are cleaning up the mess in the foyer when I get there.
"Tavvy!" I yell. Octavian's head shots up and he frowns when he sees I'm pissed. "By the Angel, Tavvy. You know you're prohibited to open the damn door, or leave the institute without my permission."
"I'm sorry, Clary. I didn't mean to——" He tumbles back as Olivia hugs him fiercely. Julian trudges towards us before I realize the wound in his leg.
"What does this mean?" He gestures at the mess. "The demon attacks?"
"It means he's back," I say, grimacing.
"Who's back?" Jules asks, confused.
"Malcolm Fade."

I hope you liked it.
