Chapter One

The night air was cool and misty, coating the streets with a haze that make cars slow their cruise. A night that seemed to float and dance underneath the soft glow of the moon as it masked itself behind the dazed clouds. It settled deep in the fabric of the many citizens who chose to walk that disguised evening, unbeknownst of the shadowed visitors.

Of course, as the time descended, the streets naturally emptied of their inhabitants, and the fuzzy orange light of the lamps overhead flew onto the streets. Shops and businesses turned off their lights quietly, the frosted cars leaving their parked bearings to head onto their own abode. All was quiet but the gentle slick of cars rolling over the wet pavement.

In the steady silence, a sudden vibration hummed down an ally owned by a newly opened pub. A sturdy, light blue building, with tinted windows and neon signs that blinked through the fog. The lawn was cut short, whimsical and eerily dusted with mist under the neon light. The front door's light flickered on, revealing the print of 'Joe's Pub' on the cloudy window. It had a mysterious aura about it that sent many wandering away, but the booming base of loud music drove partiers inside. It wasn't surprising to most when in the dead of morning drunks stumbled out and onto the street.

A resounding bang echoed through the night as the ally's side door was thrown open. The thrumming music flooded into the streets, and a boy was thrown haphazardly out of the pub. Two men walked out after him, identical leather jackets glinting in the little light there was. The taller of the two stepped forward into the streetlights, his short hair a deep grey that seemed to stand on end. His jacket was buttoned up tight; his cuffs snug around his wrists. He rubbed the light stubble on his chin before removing his shades, revealing equally dark eyes. His frown curved lines around his mouth on his otherwise uncaring expression.

"What luck. We've found our little runner, Hal." His unenthusiastic voice droned through the vibrant music as the door slowly fell shut, scuffling the cement as it went.

Hal stepped up behind the other, running a thin hand through his wild auburn hair. "Well, what do you know- it is him! I couldn't tell when he was in the air." His carefree tone greatly contrasted his companion's. He shifted in his loose blue jeans, his jacket open and revealing a dark red shirt imprinted with a grinning white skull. "We're gettin' let off early, Rain!" Hal grinned; his young face lighting up as his brown eyes twinkled.

Rain scowled, rubbing his head gingerly as if he had a migraine. "Quiet down, you dimwit."

Hal pouted, puffing up his cheeks. "What? I'm just glad that we can rest easy tonight."

Rain turned his eyes back to the boy, wrapping his large hand around the other's jacket collar. With a swift tug, he lifted the boy into the air. He seemed unaffected when a gasp escaped the boy, whose hands grasped his and tried to push away. Hal, however, stepped forward.

"Don't choke him!"

Rain rolled his eyes. "I'm not, Jace is just being a baby."

Hal's eyes roamed once more over the boy. Familiar ruffled blond hair and piercing hazel eyes stared back at him. His face was twisted with pain as he struggled from Rain, kicking out his feet. Hal frowned.

"I don't know."

Jace grinded his teeth at the observing gaze, and fisted his hand, punching Rain boldly in the arm. As he was dropped to the ground, he wobbled on the spot. Jace glared at the two as Rain rubbed his arm carefully. "Of course I'm not okay! You both just threw me out on my ass!" he hollered, throwing his fist around angrily before he tried to make a duck for it.

Hal blinked owlishly, swiftly grabbing him by the back of his collar. "You can't be running off by yourself." he murmured. His eyes flashed in a change of heart. "Hey! What were you doin' in there, anyway? First, you take off, and then you sneak into a bar? To see a woman no less! What's the matter with you?"

Jace scrunched up his face with vexation and hurt, and he violently wrenched away from two to storm off into the street. "If you all hate me why can't you just leave me alone?"

Hal's eyes followed him sharply, and he strode after the boy while Rain stood idly in the ally, clearly unperturbed. "Hey, you can't just leave."

Jace pulled at his jacket in an irritated manner. "I'm sixteen! I can do what ever the hell I want, and I say, I'm leaving!"

Hal ran up to Jace, grabbing him by the shoulder roughly. "You don't have a say! Where are you going to go? The Suits are everywhere! If we let you-"

Jace tore away from Hal, his eyes blazing. "I don't care! Anywhere is better than here. I'm sick of sitting around and being looked down on! I'm sick of the clan, and I'm sick of you!"

Hal's carefree demeanor plunged into icy waters. He frowned deeply, a sort of confliction swirling in the depths of his eyes. Jace spun quickly around on his heel and dashed down the lit pavement. Hal's eyes lit with surprise, and he leapt after him.

"You have no where to go!" Hal called.

"You don't know me very well!" Jace hollered back.

As Jace slowly but surely disappeared into the mist, Hal's mind began to reel and he slowed to a lope before he stopped all together. He glared at the thickening fog.

A hard fist knocked him in the back of the head. Hal cried out in pain. "Ow! What the h-"

"Idiot! Why'd you let him get away? You know how fast he runs. We'll never catch him in this fog." Rain grumbled. "Nadya's going to be pissed."

Hal merely looked away, his attention focused on the barely visible sidewalk Jace had run down. "...Just who would he run too?"

The wind whistled in his ears as his legs pushed him farther and farther away from the city. The mist layered in his eyes, making him repeatedly blink. His lungs clenched, and Jace slid to a stop to catch his breath. He panted harshly as he leaned up against a tree, his throat clogged with the surrounding vapor. Jace rubbed his neck, trying to smooth out whatever it was that clung in his throat.

"Why can't I just do whatever I want? They don't want me around anyway..." he murmured.

Jace's eyes wandered over his surroundings and he scowled as he realized that he had ran blindly through the forest. Jace sniffed, the moss pungent in his nose. He rubbed it away with his jacket sleeve.

"Well. That's just great, Jace. Let's go get lost in the woods! Maybe we'll meet an ax murderer!" Jace froze, his face contorting in panic. "Shit! Why did I voice that aloud?!"

Jace looked around nervously, but he couldn't see farther than two feet in every direction. He turned back the way he thought he had come, dark shadows playing at his peripheral vision.

"...I'll just follow the street that leads out of the city... Yeah, if I make good time, maybe I'll catch her..."

Sticks snapped under his feet, and shivers ran up his spine. As he made his way, leaves brushed up against him, leaving cold traces on his neck and hands. The snaps seemed too loud in his ears, and he looked over his shoulder multiple times at the suspicion of being followed. The shadows seemed to crawl and dance around him, and Jace swallowed thickly, the stickiness in his throat growing.

The sound of an engine made him jump, and Jace turned toward the noise. Relief exploded in his being at the sound of it. Jace broke into a dash, and as his feet hit the ground, his strides grew clumsy with suspense. Branches and thorns made a grab at him, making Jace move even faster. His jacket made a whirring sound as the sleeves rubbed against his sides, and he tried to take comfort in the familiar sound.

Surprise overtook him as he burst through a thick line of tall bushes and into a clearing. He gasped as gravel cluttered beneath him, making him stumble. A blinding light struck his vision, and fear rippled within his heart as a blaring horn rang in his ears. Jace raised his eyes to the blurry headlights ripping through the dark and barreling straight towards him.

A fierce pull on his arm ripped him from the ground, and sent him tumbling into the ditch beside the rode. Rocks dug into his shoulders as he rolled to a stop in the low curve. His heart pounded in his ears as the truck sped by, spitting gravel in his face. Jace rubbed the dirt from his eye as the sharp smell of dog filled his nose. Jace jumped to his feet, ready to let his pent up frustration fly at Hal, when he spotted the unfamiliar black coat of the wolf. Blue eyes bored into his own, before drifting over his figure. The striking eyes caught his gaze once more, and a cold shiver ran through his legs. The wolf's eyes narrowed at him and it bared its teeth lightly in annoyance.

"Only a moron would stand in the middle of a road." A rough feminine voice growled.

Jace's eyes widened, his heart freezing his chest. "...S-suit..." He nervously raised his hands in case he needed to fend it off, and started to back up. "I- um, sorry?"

The wolf squared her shoulders and lifted her head from the crouch she had landed in. "Why are you apologizing? For making me go completely out of my way to save you?" The wolf scoffed, turning her ill-amused eyes onto the road. She turned with a flick of her tail, and began to trot away.

Jace blinked confusedly. "...Why did you save me? I thought Suits hated those outside of The Unity."

The wolf looked over her broad shoulder, her blue eyes hard as ice. "If the truck had swerved to avoid hitting you, it would have ripped over my bike."

Jace's internal gratitude toward his savior dropped like a dead weight. "Then why are you walking away?"

The wolf growled threateningly. "Would you mind sparing me from explaining my actions and let me do what I came here to do?" She rolled her eyes at him as she continued to take her leave.

Jace furrowed his brow. "She must be a rogue or something..." Jace turned his head from side to side, looked down at his own feet, and then he came to a realization. He was still lost. Jace ran after the dark creature that had disappeared during his musings. "Hey, wait! Could you-" Jace paused mid step as he encountered the bright light of a motorcycle.

What looked like the figure of a teenage girl stood beside the bike as it's engine roared to life. She turned to grab her helmet, her wild black hair shining a sleek blue in the intense light. Her shadowed face was eerily imperceptible in the muffled light, though her blue eyes shone clearly in the mass of shadows. When she caught him staring, those icy eyes narrowed at him, and she set her helmet against her hip in irritation. "What now?"

Her solemn voice lacked the feral tone it had before, but it was just as intimidating, and he recognized it. Jace blinked once, twice, and his mouth fell open in a search for words. "C-could you give me a ride?"

The blue eyes narrowed. "Are you serious? If you go around trusting people right off the bat, you're going to end up getting killed."

Jace lowered his chin. Her tone was riddled with disbelief and what sounded like a scolding. His gaze settled on the familiar eyes determinedly. He tried to ignore the nervous shaking in his knees. "If you were untrustworthy, you wouldn't tell me that."

Her eyes flashed with furious frustration, and Jace found himself freezing up. She seemed to notice his change in demeanor and her shoulders slacked. With a sigh, she threw him the helmet, and Jace caught it before it slammed full force into his stomach.

"Where to?"

Jace's eyes widened in surprise. "To the city- on the other side of the forest I mean..."

Jace wandered up to the bike as she sat down. He shifted from foot to foot, unable to sort out his thoughts that seemed to fight with one another. Should he trust her? What if he's mistaking a stranger for her? What if she leads him to a detention center?!

Jace leaned to the side, trying to get a glimps of her face. Blue eyes found his, and in the light of the motorcycle, the girl's irritated expression broke through his thoughts. "What are you waiting for?"

The same soft features from his memory caught him by surprise. All thoughts of doubt seemed to vaporize as the stern and disciplined looking girl waited for him to sit. Jace rubbed the back of his neck, finding himself incomprehensibly embarrassed. "Um, I've never really ridden a motorcycle before..."

Again the blue eyes rolled dramatically, and a gloved hand patted the seat behind her. Jace frowned slightly in discontent, and he slid the helmet on over his head. Slowly, he lifted one leg over the machine and sat on the tail of the leather seat, leaving plenty of room between them.

"You're going to fall off if you sit so far back." Her irritated tone dimly droned through the helmet. Her hands reached back and gripped his arms tightly. She pulled him forward, flush against her back. Jace's face lit up like a ripe tomato. "Then, you hold around the waist, so you don't lean back..." She then began to wrap his arms around her stomach so that each hand touched the opposite side of her torso. "Now just lean into me; you can rest your head on my back if you get nervous. When I turn, you have to lean into it with me or we'll probably be tossed. Ready?"

By then, Jace's lower lip was trembling but he'd never admit to it. He numbly nodded his head, and the motorcycle shifted beneath him.

"Hold on tight."

Jace didn't need to be told twice as the motorcycle lurched into the foggy night.
