Alive
Clara smelt roses and soon realised she was in the park behind her school. The sun shone brightly in the sky, too brightly. She squinted her eyes and lifted her hand to shade them. Off in the distance she saw Emily, however not the Emily she remembered. She was older, taller, and fully developed. Her hair was a lighter shade than Clara's and hung in a straight line done her back. She wore leggings with a white shirt and denim jacket. She was talking to a boy, Clara saw with a pang of disbelief. The Emily Clara remembered would never be caught with "a disgusting boy". The boy turned around and Clara's jaw dropped to the ground when she realised the boy was Ralph.
Ralph waved, his face splitting into a friendly smile. Clara was too stunned to wave back. She'd never seen him so happy and healthy before. Flushed cheeks, stylishly brushed white blonde hair, thinking blue eyes. He looks alive, Clara thought in shock.
Emily frowned at something behind Clara. Clara turned around and was instantly engulfed by two long, strong, arms. Her face smashed into a muscular chest that smelt like shaving foam and honey. Clara breathed it in.
Toby.
"Hello beautiful." He whispered softly into her hair. "Miss me?"
She did miss him, however had no idea why.
"Yes." She breathed, holding him tighter. A soft chuckle erupted from his chest.
His arms tightened around her body and he pressed a kiss to her forehead. Unexpectedly, Clara felt hot and cold all at once. Burning and freezing. She gasped, pushing against Toby who remained holding her. She wanted out, out of this pain, this torture. The pain increased and Clara screamed.
Toby would never give up on her. She would wake up. She had to. If she didn't, he'd give himself over to the first demon he saw. People would try to prevent it, but he wouldn't never let them succeed. His only purpose was her. Only her.
Clara jolted up suddenly, hitting Toby in the chin with the top of her head. The pain was there, but Toby didn't care. His eyes widened as she spun around, her face dripping water from the shower still pelting down on them. She looked confused, scared and shocked all at once. Her hair had turned an even darker shade of red from the water and was smeared along her face. She'd never looked more beautiful.
"Toby?" She whispered quietly, seeming unsure with her question. Toby took her in, from the colour of her eyes to the curve of her throat. She was sat in between his legs, her back on his chest, her neck turned up to face him. It was an intimate position, but a protective one at the same time. No one could hurt her as long as he was there to protect her.
Slowly, she placed her freezing fingertips on his cheek and traced a line to the corner of his lips. Toby shuddered beneath her touch. He had been so sure he'd lost her. So sure from the minute he saw the flash of golden light and the fallen angel trapped inside of it, unconscious. There didn't have to be blood to tell him something very wrong was happening. But now she is here, with him, seeming more alive than he'd ever seen her. That's when it clicked.
It's because she is alive.
