Chapter 12 - Project Quake
They arrived in Tanglewood, Manhattan.
Ian quickly got out of the car and put on his hood. Damien, Lena and Lucas got out too.
'Stick to what we planned in the car. We find the device, Lena and Lucas destroy it and Damien will hold off any vampire that might try to stop us.'
'What about Julian?' Damien asked.
'I'll take care of him.'
'So where's the place?' Lena asked.
'Follow me.'
Damien led them into an old abandoned building by the corner of the street.
The place was full with dust and cobwebs. There was also a kind of green mould on the walls.
'This place is disgusting!' Lena said.
'You sure this is the right place.' Lucas asked.
Ian spotted a big, bow like machine stationed to the ground. It had a timer on it that was not activated.
Julian and two other vampires came out of the shadows.
'Yep! This is definitely the right place.' Damien said.
'Glad you all could come to witness the end of New York city.' Julian said.
'You won't succeed, Julian!' Ian said.
'We'll see about that.'
Julian pushed the pushed a button by the side of the machine, activating the timer. The timer was for two minutes which was now counting down.
'By the time this timer is off, this machine will produce an earthquake so great, that this city will be nothing but rubble. Catch me of you can, Ian.' Julian said before he whooshed out of the building.
Damien came at the two other vampires and ripped their hearts out.
'This thing is about go off. What do we do?' Lena asked.
'I can shut it off! If it has a circuit, I can shut it off.' Lucas said.
'I'm going after Julian. I believe in you, Lucas. You can this, you can all do this.'
Ian whooshed out.
Lena went behind the machine and took off a slate that covered a bunch wires connected to the system. Lucas rummaged through the wires, looking for the right ones to cut.
'Are you sure you know what you're doing?' Damien asked.
'If this has the same configuration of a computer, then yes. If not, we're screwed.'
'You mean you're screwed. Ian and I will probably survive the earthquake. Then I can find him a new girlfriend.'
'That's not helping, Damien.' Lena said.
The timer had now reached five more seconds.
Right before it hit the last second, Lucas find the blue wire in the bunch and cut it out with a pocket knife. The timer immediately went off.
Lucas touched his chest to feel his heartbeat which had now gone done.
'I can't believe that worked.' Lena said in relief.
Julian was on the roof of the building, making a phone call.
'Tell them to bring the helicopter here now.' He shouted with the phone to his ear. 'I don't have five minutes!'
Ian whooshed onto the roof and kicked the phone out of his hand.
'I guess now it will be a fair fight!' Ian said.
'Then what are you waiting for. Let's finish this!'
Julian punched Ian down. He got up and kicked him in the face. Julian pulled out a gun and shot Ian in the gut.
He held Ian at the edge of the roof, strangling him with both his hands.
Ian pushed him away and bashed his head against Julian's.
Julian attempted to punch him but Ian held back his hand and punched him in the nose up to five times.
Julian was disoriented, almost stumbling around. He came at Ian one last time with all his strength and speed.
Ian grabbed him, put him on his shoulder and threw him on the ground. Then he ran a stake into Julian, that went through his shoulder into the ground.
Julian pulled out the stake, grunting as it come out of the ground and then his shoulder.
He then stood up, weak and battered.
'You think this means you've won? Moments from now this city will be gone.'
Damien whooshed onto the rooftop with Lena and Lucas.
'Actually, your plan was a bust!'
Julian looked around confused and shocked.
'You must have realized by now that those two minutes are up.' Ian said grinning at Lena and Lucas. 'Nice work, guys.'
'It was mostly Lucas.' Lena said.
'Actually, it was more a team effort.'
'You can take the win on this one, kid.' Damien said.
'This isn't over,' Julian said, 'I won't stop until you are all dead. I will burn the city down like I have done to others, and I will.........'
Damien jammed a syringe into his neck before he could utter another word, and injected holy water into him. Then he snapped his right arm backwards and put him on his knees.
'Even if you kill me, the Night Circle will never stop hunting you.'
'I'll take care of them.' Damien said.
'For years I dreamt about this day,' Ian said, 'of how I would make you pay. I bet you thought you would never be accountable for it. But trust me, no one can outrun karma.'
'Look!' Lucas said pointing at the sky.
The sun had come up. It was a new day.
Damien tried to open Julian's left hand where his daylight ring was.
Julian closed it tightly, causing Damien to force it open, breaking the hand in the process.
Ian was now standing before Julian. He looked into his eyes and noticed fear in him. For he knew what was about to happen.
Ian smirked and said;
'Goodbye, Julian!'
He ripped the ring off his index finger and Damien let go of him.
As the sunlight touched his body, it began scorching, as if roasting him slowly.
Then after a moment, his whole body caught on fire.
Julian screamed at the top of his voice as he was burned alive, and in the very moment, Ian truly felt that justice had been served.
Julian stopped screaming and eventually died.
They all gazed at the sight of the fire still burning his body.
After stopping Project Quake, Damien arranged a meeting with the Night Circle.
They all gathered in the crypt in the catacombs where they waited eagerly for Damien.
Damien then finally arrived.
'Where were you?' A vampire asked.
'Let's just cut to the chase. As of this day onward, I am no longer a member of the Night Circle!' He said throwing his initiation ring on the floor.
'You swore an oath!'
'An oath that I now revoke since I've already broken it. You all lied to me about Julian. For that alone I should kill you. But I will give you a chance to leave this city with your lives.'
'We're not going anywhere!'
'Fine, don't say I didn't warn you.'
Damien disappeared into the shadows.
Suddenly, there was a strange beeping sound coming from one of the tombs.
One of the vampires opened it and saw a bomb which immediately went off, creating a blast that killed all the vampires there and destroyed the catacombs.
Damien went back Ian's house to find him drinking from a blood bag.
'It's done! All the vampires that aren't dead are fleeing the city right now, according to George. I know that I can't even begin to start apologizing for all the things I've done. But I decided to help out a friend of yours as a start. I took Shane's body to the morgue and had a few strings pulled to fake the story. By tomorrow, the police will announce that Shane was mauled by a wolf when he got back to town today. At least now, he can have a proper funeral.'
'Thank you! Now I know that we can put him to rest.' Ian said, dropping the blood bag.
'We can. But isn't over, Ian. We may have stopped the Night Circle here, but it is a world wide association. There are still dozens of them out there and they won't stop until they find that weapon. They're doing it for him!'
'For who?'
'CADE!'
In a dark room, a man sat down on a throne-like chair. A great shadow covered his face, concealing his identity.
Then another man, a vampire entered the room and knelt before him, bowing his head.
'Sire, forgive me! The plan was unsuccessful, but I................'
'So you've failed me again?' The man asked in a deep, solemn English accent.
'Yes! But I promise you, sire. Next time will be different.......................'
The man whooshed at the vampire and ripped out his head, throwing it into the shadows.
'Forget it! I'll just do it myself.'
The man left the dark room and embarked on a journey to New York city.
