Chapter 1 _ The Return
Ian stood by the window in his bedroom, staring at the beautiful city he had left behind all these years.
Suddenly, a friend of his named Shane entered the room.
'Ian, what are you doing?' He asked.
'I'm just looking at the city, and what has become of it in my absence.'
'You still haven't told me what you're doing in New York.'
'I already told you, I'm here to save my city.'
'From the Night Circle?'
Ian nodded in response
'The Night Circle is an army of the most and ancient vampires in the world. You are but one man. How do you intend to stop them alone.'
'I've faced worse. Besides, twenty people have already been found dead. Eight of them were teens. I can't sit by and do nothing.'
'Fine, I understand.
'Then you'll help me?'
'Have I not already helped you by allowing you to live in this house. Which is my house by the way.'
'Please I just need I thing from you.'
'Which is?'
'I need you to help me get some wooden stakes and holy water.'
'Are you serious?'
'Since I'm going after the Night Circle, I need to be prepared.'
'Okay, I'll help get the holy water and the stakes. But I'm only doing this cause I owe you and we're friends.'
'Thank you.'
Shane left to carry out the assignment. While Ian continued staring at his city.
The next morning, Ian came down to the kitchen and took a blood bag from the fridge, while Shane stood by the pantry and drank some coffee.
Ian drank every last drop of blood from that pint and disposed of it. Then he grabbed his bag pack and headed for the door.
'Where are you going?'
'School!'
'Why are you going to school?'
'If I'm going to stay here I need to fit in. I don't want anybody to think anything is off, so I'm going to high school again. For the sixty fifth time to be exact.'
'Alright, just be careful.'
'I'm a 500 year old vampire, I can take care of myself.'
'Have a good day!'
'You too, Shane.'
Ian arrived in the high school. He scanned the students faces as he walked through the hallway. He spotted a boy who had black skin with dreaded hair and glasses.
He approached the boy as he was about to enter a classroom.
'Hey, I'm Ian. Please I'm new here, could you please tell me where the principal's office is?
'Just keep walking, then take a left turn and you'll see the principal's office.'
'Thanks.'
'I'm Lucas by the way.'
He stretched out his right hand to Ian which he reached out to shake.
'So which school are you transferring from?'
'Northridge High School.'
'I have class now, so I have to go.'
'Thanks for the help.'
'No problem.'
Lucas went in his classroom, and Ian went to the Principal's office to get fully admitted into the school.'
Ian entered the principal's office and saw her sitting on a chair drinking from a coffee mug which she slowly put down as she saw him.
'You must be Ian O'Connell.' She said.
'Yes, I am.'
'In order for you to get admitted, I need your birth certificate, school attendance and any other relevant information.'
'No, you don't.'
'Excuse me?'
Ian leaned forward towards the principal and looked deep into her eyes as his become of a dark red colour and bloodshot.
'You don't need any of that.' He said still staring into her eyes.
'You're right! I don't need any of it. You're admitted.' She said completely hypnotized by his glance.
'Thank you.' He said as his eyes returned to their original form.
On his way out of the office, he accidentally bumped into a girl passing by, and all of her books fell. He quickly helped her to pick them up. The girl had long brown hair and piercing blue eyes.
'Thank you.' She said.
'No problem.'
'Are you new here?'
'Yeah, I just got admitted.'
'I hope you haven't ran into Lucas.'
'Lucas?'
'Yes, he's the one who gives the new students their orientation, and he always tries to make them join the book club, then he gets turned down and he keeps trying till they budge.'
Ian could not stop himself from laughing because although he did not want to admit it, he was already mitten with her.
'I've already met him. But thanks for telling me.'
'I'm Lena.'
'I'm Ian.'
'Well, it's to meet you, Ian.'
'It's nice to meet you too, Lena. I've got somewhere to be. So I'll see you around?'
'Of course.'
Lena walked into her classroom.
At the end of the day, Ian got home, dropped his bag pack and went to the kitchen for a drink. When he got there, he noticed an unusual expression on his face.
'What's wrong?' Ian asked.
'It's nothing.'
'You're a terrible liar. It's one of the reasons we get along so well.'
Shane took a deep breath and wiped his sweat drenched faced.
'A few days ago, some members of the Night Circle came into this house and told me to stop looking into their activities. But I refused and today I received a box.'
Shane brought out a box and placed it on the table. Ian opened it and saw a human heart.
'I saw it on the door step after you left. It's their finally warning to me.'
'This is real reason why you told me about the Night Circle when I was still in Detroit, isn't it?'
'I told you because I hoped you would come back to save the city, and also to save me.'
'Then let's take them down. We can start tonight.'
'How?'
'Easy, I'll draw them out and take them out one by one.'
'I don't think it will be that easy.'
'I know, and that's why I will be prepared.'
Ian went up to his bedroom, opened a rather dusty old box under his bed. From this box he pulled out an old black hood, one he never thought he would use again.
At the stroke of midnight, Ian stood in the dark shade of an alleyway waiting for any member of the Night Circle to show up. This alley was where the Night Circle usually snatch people. Nobody went there anymore, but Ian was prepared to take the risk.
He wore the old black hood which covered his head and concealed his face. He also had two wooden stakes stuffed in his jacket and a small bottle of holy water in his pocket.
He spotted a vampire coming out of the shadows following a young lady walking down the empty and cold foggy street.
Ian followed the vampire as it followed the lady.
It got to a point where the vampire had the lady cornered in the same alleyway that Ian was. The vampire grabbed her and plunged his fangs into her neck sucking her blood.
The woman screamed for help in pain as the vampire surped her blood.
Ian then came out of the shadows and dragged the vampire off the lady. He bit into his own vein and fed the woman his blood which healed her. His eyes became dark red and bloodshot again as he looked into her eyes and said;
'Forget everything that has happened tonight. You took a walk down the street and that was all.'
She did exactly as he told her and left the alleyway.
'You shouldn't have done that. Now I have to kill you.' The vampire said.
'You mean try to kill me.'
The vampire rushed at him, he brought out a stake and drove it into his heart. The vampire dropped dead on the ground.
Two other vampire come out of the shadows. Ian took out the holy water and sprinkled it on one of the vampires face which burnt him like acid as he shouted in pain. Ian then swiftly drove the second stake into his heart. He grabbed the last vampire, broke his arm and pinned him down. Ian held him by the neck and drew his ear closer to his mouth.
'Tell the rest of the Night Circle that Shane Lockhart is off limits, and that they have until the end of this week to leave this city, and if they don't, I'll come for each and every one of them.'
Ian let him go, and as soon as he did the vampire ran away with it's full speed. It was almost like a blur with the sound whoosh.
Ian looked back at the corpses of the vampires he had killed which rapidly became mummified and desiccated, an instant effect of a dead vampire's body. Afterwards, Ian retreated into the shadows.
