Rykard, Godly Hydra Apophis - 1
Here's another chapter, my friends! At this point, we've basically gotten to the point of my extra chapters that gave me buffer room, but I'm not particularly worried about that!
This is the first time that our fight against a demigod will last more than one chapter! It may even be more than two! Regardless of that, I hope it's an enjoyable read.
For this chapter's question: Where do you expect the story to be going in the future?
It's a bit of an odd question, but I feel like it will show me if I've been guiding you all in the way I wanted to.
Nothing else for right now though! I hope you enjoy the chapter!
-----
On the edge of the Liurnia of the Lakes, there was the Village of the Albinaurics. It was once a quiet little town, bustling with the fleeting lives of the Albinaurics.
Now, such a place was only bustling with corpses, flies, and maggots. All the life in the area was stripped away, and it was left a mere shell of its former self.
Albinaurics were man-made lifeforms, and as such, entire generations were innately flawed. The first generation of albinaurics couldn't walk because of the flaws of their creation, and after a short life, they were destined to die.
Despite this pitiable existence, by the state of the village, it was clear they received no such pity. The village was recently attacked.
Rogier the Sorcerer, Nepheli Loux the Warrior, and Boc the Demi-Human Seamster all walked through the destroyed village quietly. The former two were clearly ready for a battle to break out, while Boc was clearly ready to run for the hills at the first sign of danger.
Rogier held his staff up in his left hand, his rapier still sheathed around his waist. His hand was just aching to reach for it at the first sign of danger. Nepheli held her Stormhawk Axes but was fairly relaxed in comparison to Rogier. Her tension didn't seem to lie in her body as much as in her mind.
Rogier whispered quietly, swallowing down dry saliva. "This is... beyond me. Why would (Y/n) send us to a place like this?"
Nepheli clenched her hands around her axes tighter. "Perhaps, he meant to show us these injustices. My father... he promised that he'd halt signs like this, but... at least I can help out here myself."
Boc looked up to Nepheli. "H-Help out?"
Nepheli nodded firmly. "I can tell, there are still threats lingering around here. As long as they exist, this place will not be safe."
Rogier sighed, as it became impossible to continue sneaking around when Nepheli spoke without a whisper. He spoke quietly, but in a more casual tone. "Who even is there to defeat at a time like this?"
Nepheli looked around, seeming like even she didn't quite have an answer to the question. She shrugged half-heartedly, "I don't know." For a few minutes after, the three fell into a silence, soon beginning to climb a hill to advance forward.
As the trio climbed a hill, Nepheli suddenly stopped, causing Rogier and Boc to stop seconds after. Boc somehow got even quieter than he'd normally be, holding his breath to not even make noise.
Nepheli glanced around silently, her warrior's intuition spiking up suddenly. "Something is... off here. Someone is hidden."
That caused Rogier's attention to shoot up, and his staff rose as he scanned the area. He only gave Nepheli glances as he checked and rechecked the area frantically, "Are they hostile?" He whispered.
Nepheli didn't answer, her eyes suddenly locking onto a simplistic pot. She approached it, causing Rogier and Boc to shuffle alongside her. Boc was simply scared out of his mind, but Rogier was more confused, but either way, they were both unwilling to part with Nepheli, who was easily the most powerful fighter of the three.
Nepheli approached the pot and spoke clearly, despite how bizarre the scene was. She spoke with utter confidence. "Reveal yourself, lest we fall into combat."
"What are you...?" Rogier's voice tapered off as an unnatural fog flowed over the red pot, clearing to reveal an elderly Albinauric, unable to walk. He held his hands up worriedly, saying nothing. From his neck swung a notable necklace.
Boc let out a little squeak, "O-Oh!" He backed up behind Rogier, as if the Albinauric would attack him.
"Who are you?" Nepheli asked.
The Albinauric slowly glanced up, happy that he wasn't being relentlessly attacked. "Ah, y-yes! I am Albus, a-and as you can see... this village is finished. Cursemongers have destroyed everything, b-but they didn't succeed in their mission!"
Nepheli frowned. "Do you know what they wanted?"
Albus nodded frantically, "Y-Yes! It was this." Albus slowly showed his necklace off. "It's the Haligtree Medallion, once said to be the path to reunite us to Lord Miquella."
Nepheli turned around, looking off into the distance. "A cursemonger. There is only one left here, I can sense him. I will avenge your people."
Albus shook his head. "N-No, revenge doesn't matter anymore. More importantly, you must not let this medallion fall into the hands of the cursemongers." He extended his hands feebly, touching Nepheli's hand, even as it was wrapped around her Stormhawk Axes. "Please, promise it will be safe."
Nepheli nodded once, bending down to Albus' level. "On my honor, it will be safe."
At that, Albus suddenly relaxed, letting out a sigh of distant relief. "Thank you...." And then, without anything else, his skin began to flake away, and he simply faded away, gone. That was the sad, unfortunate fate of the Albinaurics.
Even in death, they could not have peace.
Nepheli reached down and swiped up the Haligtree Medallion, noting that it was only half of the medallion. She put the necklace on, and it hung gently on her chest. She glanced back at Boc and Rogier, who seemed to be expressing remorse for Albus in their own ways.
She nodded to the distance. "He deserves a proper burial. The corpse of a cursemonger will be a fair beginning."
The three walked in solemn silence for a few minutes, before Nepheli saw the cursemonger in the distance, across a bridge. They were an Omenkiller, well-known for their brutality towards Omen.
Out of nowhere, she let out a warcry, scaring the life out of Rogier and Boc, who had become accustomed to the utter silence for the last several minutes.
Then, before the quiet duo could even comprehend Nepheli's action, she began charging towards the Omenkiller, her Stormhawk Axes raised high as lightning crackled around her.
"W-Wait, you can't just —!" But before Rogier could even complain about Nepheli's warrior-like tendencies, she was gone, having certainly attracted the Omenkiller's attention with her warcry. Rogier cast a quick glance towards Boc, who seemed utterly terrified at the thought of even having to face an opponent. "J-Just hang back! We'll come back after!"
Boc let out a series of quick, jerky nods, and Rogier ran after Nepheli.
The difference in their physical states became clear as Nepheli was faster, had more stamina, and clearly had stronger lungs than the magic-oriented sorcerer. However, he did manage to eventually catch up to her, but only after she already had the Omenkiller on the ropes. The light from the large opening in the wall shined behind Nepheli, almost giving her an angelic look.
In (Y/n)'s past life, Nepheli couldn't dream of facing the Omenkiller on her own, but because he preemptively gave her the Stormhawk King Ashes and stimulated her growth, she was stronger than ever, and certainly strong enough to take out an Omenkiller on its own.
Unfortunately, it wasn't entirely on its own. Three dogs began circling around Nepheli, and because she was so focused on the Omenkiller, she barely noticed as one leapt at her.
"Back off!" With a roar, a burst of blue energy came shooting out of Rogier's wand and slammed into the dog, launching it away. With two more shots, the other dogs were sent back too.
Unlike Nepheli, Rogier hadn't received any impressive buffs from (Y/n), but he was still a menacing opponent, so he could easily hold off some dogs for Nepheli.
With that help, Nepheli let out a roar and pushed her Stormhawk Axes through the Omenkiller's Double Cleavers before spinning and taking the monster's head off its shoulders completely, a thunderclap shooting out an instant later.
With a few more spell casts, Rogier killed the trio of dogs, and Nepheli gave him a happy smile, completely unbefitting the blood which managed to spray her face. It was a bright smile, one that sent Rogier's stomach into a little backflip.
"Thank you, sorcerer. I knew I could trust you," Nepheli bowed her head to Rogier as she sheathed her axes around her waist.
Rogier waved his hand, "It's no problem. I didn't do much." Rogier looked down at the Omenkiller's corpse, surprised by how clean Nepheli's swipes were. "You're... quite something."
Nepheli shook her head, seeming deeply conflicted. Her eyes were locked onto a small symbol on the Omenkiller's weapon. "I only wish I had a chance to help this poor village before this tragedy occurred. I'm ashamed that we were too late."
Rogier hesitated for a moment before putting his hand on Nepheli's shoulder, grabbing her attention. He looked her in the eyes steadily, or about as steadily as he could. "This wasn't our fault. Whoever is to blame for this will be brought to justice, by us."
Nepheli nodded, suddenly invigorated by Rogier's determination. "You're right! Thank you, sorcerer Rogier. And thank you too...." Nepheli looked around for Boc, only to see him barely crossing the bridge with several tired huffs. "Thank you, Seamster Boc."
Boc suddenly looked up, confused. "M-My Lady, what have I done to earn your thanks?"
Nepheli smiled. She opened her mouth, but suddenly her head whipped around. Rogier and Boc followed her eyes, but she was the one to see the incoming threat first.
There was a sudden eruption of light, and a massive creature appeared from within it, light rising from its skin. Lava crashed against the shallow lakewater of Liurnia, steam rising into the air like a blanket.
The beast was a flurry of serpentine heads, whipping about and spewing flames, poison, and a bunch of other attacks. From magic, to lava, the surrounding area of Raya Lucaria was being absolutely demolished, and Liurnia of the Lakes wasn't going to survive for much longer.
The Glintstone Dragon Smarag was immediately threatened by the much, much larger being's sudden presence. Smarag let out a territorial roar and flew into the sky, letting out magical flames with the intention of burning the monster to the ground.
However, the flames painlessly slid over the monster's skin like they didn't exist. Then, in a snapping movement, a head whipped up into the sky and clamped down onto the Glintstone Dragon. Smarag didn't have a chance to react, and as it was ripped back and forth like a chew toy, it died.
The head swallowed the dragon, and as soon as the mouth closed, glintstones began to form along the outer skin of the monster's one of many heads.
Before Nepheli, Rogieir, and Boc could even comprehend what the sight before them, a massive poison glob was flying towards the trio.
"Get down!" Nepheli roared, quickly leaping to grab Boc. She immediately knew that he was the weakest of the three, so she didn't trust his reaction time to be good enough to save his life. Rogier, as if to prove her right, dropped to the ground at an extremely close time.
Speeding over them in a sizzling ball of goopy, poisonous muck, the ball passed exactly where they were standing, drops landing around them. Rogier looked wide-eyed at a spot where a drop had hit. The drop didn't just melt through the ground, it vaporized it.
'If we'd even been a second later, it would be us that was gone, not the dirt!' Rogier thought, his skin turning pale.
The three slowly rose, but they were horrified to see that the poison glob demolished the bridge, completely leaving them stranded. Furthermore, they were far up from the ground, so there would be no easy path to escape.
Nepheli and Rogier managed to keep their cool, but out of pure shock, Boc already fell unconscious. Rogier slowly turned around, and a blast of magical energy was flying their way. He barely managed to hold his staff up and push energy through it, but compared to someone like Salem or Sellen, the act of creating a viable shield was essentially impossible.
As such, the energy crashed into his makeshift shield and shattered it immediately, dousing Rogier in impossibly powerful energy.
He flew back, his body covered in injuries. While he was no good at making an external shield, the ability to cover his immediate body with mana was far easier, so he wasn't horrifically injured by the attack.
However, he was suddenly, thoroughly exhausted. Nepheli rose and stood in front of the fallen Rogier and the unconscious Boc. Now, there was another attack coming her way, in the form of lava. She knew there wasn't much she could do to stop it, but she grit her teeth and took out her Stormhawk Axes, preparing for the worst.
"Come on!" She roared.
As the lava approached, she couldn't help but flinch, and she closed her eyes.
However, the horrifyingly hot reality of the incoming lava never made it to her. She slowly opened her eyes to see a powerful man with a flowing cape standing before her. And in front of him was a gargantuan figure who was holding the lava in place with gravity magic.
Nepheli let out a relieved sigh. "I'm quite pleased to see you, Necromancer (Y/n)."
(Y/n) glanced back at Nepheli, looking over the fallen Rogier and unconscious Boc. He looked back out into the lake. "Yeah, sorry I'm late. Agheel." At his word, the Flying Dragon flew in through the opening, and landed behind him. He spoke without looking back, "Agheel will be able to help you get them away from the danger. I'll send some help over soon to look over their wounds."
Nepheli looked at Agheel nervously, but she immediately triumphed over her fears when she heard Rogier groaning in pain. She nodded, picking the two up in her two arms with shocking ease, and got atop Agheel, keeping the two secured tightly. Before Agheel took off, she looked at (Y/n) once more, grasping the medallion.
For a moment, she questioned if (Y/n) would be okay to bring it up to, but then she clearly remembered all the things he'd done for her, even without anything to clearly gain for it. She said, "You sent us here for the Haligtree Medallion, right? It's been retrieved."
(Y/n) glanced back at Nepheli, his eyes wider than normally. In truth, he'd forgotten about the Haligtree Medallion, figuring that he could just fly to anywhere he needed to with his dragons. He shook his head. "That will be important to your journey, but I didn't send you all here for that. This town... well, you saw the symbol, right?"
(Y/n) was referring to the symbol on the Omenkiller's weapon. Nepheli nodded minutely, "Yes. These men were my father's...."
"Yes, they were. But the question is what you'll do now, knowing that. Either way, I'll support your decision." (Y/n) said, before turning his attention back to the clear threat at hand, which was still rampaging. "Now go!"
As Agheel took off, and Nepheli made sure Rogier and Boc were safe, she thought, 'Father... maybe you aren't the man I thought you were. Maybe... (Y/n) is that man. Maybe he is the future.'
With his allies safe, (Y/n) looked out into the distance, his expression growing darker. "Magara, thanks for the info. Without you, I wouldn't know what to do right about now." He remembered what Magara shared with him, despite how horrific the details were.
-----
As soon as (Y/n) asked Magara to scout ahead and gather information, she got to work with her Stealth Squad.
All her experience as a Black Knife Assassin, with many tireless nights training alongside her sister-in-arms, Tiche came back to her. Her mentor and the Head of the Black Knives, Alecto, had taught her many things about sneaking around and gathering information.
That innate experience combined with the skill that her most effective Synergy granted her an incredibly efficient time when searching about. Within an hour, she and her group scoured Liurnia of the Lakes, noting that many of (Y/n)'s former allies were present, but that a few were missing.
White Mask Varre was not at the Rose Church, presumably because of his connection to Mohg, the Lord of Blood. Iron Fist Alexander, the Warrior Jar, was also nowhere to be found, but Magara had no theories for why he had vanished. Lanya and Diallos had been reunited, but they were trying to return to House Hoslow, which was proving to be a bigger journey than they expected.
Magara kept the important information in mind and discarded everything else, reaching the Altus Plateau and continuing to Mount Gelmir. On Mount Gelmir, Magara ran into a person she hadn't expected at all.
See, Magara hadn't scoured Raya Lucaria much beyond checking one of the corresponding bridges, to see if Yura was there, which he was. After confirming his presence, she didn't search much farther, because there wasn't much more for (Y/n) to account for beyond Yura.
So, Magara was shocked to see Rennala, the Queen of the Full Moon strolling through the land as if she owned it. Any threats that came her way were easily slaughtered with efficiency that was unbefitting of the broken Carian Queen.
Instead, this woman was sharp, and on top of her game. This was a sorceress that was on par with the Primeval Sorcerers Azur and Comet.
In her prime, she was able to fight against the Golden Order, and she was only stopped by her union with Radagon, who she grew to love.
She was a threat, plain and simple. With her magical prowess, it would be possible for her not to just destroy a Shadow, but to disconnect it from (Y/n) entirely, annihilating them.
Just a few seconds after Magara began observing Rennala, the Carian Queen stopped in her tracks. Her yellow eyes scanned the area methodically, before landing on the invisible Stealth Squad. She let out a pulse of energy that disrupted their combined skill, revealing the Shadows.
With her piercing yellow eyes, she looked blankly. Magara didn't quite swallow in anticipation, but she was almost there. She knew the strength of the Carian Queen, and she also knew that peeping was a quick way to get on her bad side. She prepared to convey whatever message needed to (Y/n), in case her existence was wiped away in an instant.
After an observatory moment, Rennala spoke. She was clearly looking at Magara, having acknowledged her as the leader of the Shadows.
"Spawn of the Shadow Sovereign, I see. The Full Moon suggested my acknowledgement of your master, so you will not be harmed for your invasive eyes. However, if you've come to bring me complications, I shall not hold back." Her towering form made each of her words linger like a threat, but Magara didn't retreat.
Even if she could be easily destroyed, it was her duty to make sure that her master was respected and admired wholeheartedly, and any cowardice could ruin that. There was a pregnant moment between the two before Rennala turned away, continuing forward.
After a few seconds, the Stealth Squad reactivated their Synergized Skill, disappearing from sight. It was clear that Rennala could still sense them, but it gave them a veil against any other enemies.
Later, after several minutes of silent progression through Mount Gelmir, Rennala continued.
"The Shadow Sovereign has unparalleled control over death, and even the demigods aren't out of his grasp. My beloved son, Radahn... he might've been eaten away by Malenia's Scarlet Rot, but he was still my son. And the Shadow Sovereign killed him. So, I refuse to sit still as my children are killed."
Then, the formidable sorceress flickered away in a flurry of blue energy. It was teleportation, a skill she learned from her ex-husband, Radagon, and used as a basis for her own teleportation skill.
With a huff and a hunch, Magara raced forward, allowing the Mages within the Stealth Squad to guide her on where Rennala had disappeared off to, according to the mana around. They led her to Volcano Manor in a huff, and she followed faithfully.
Throughout the manor there were the expected residents, like Tanith and Bernahl. But she didn't slow down in the slightest for them. Rya, Patches, and Diallos weren't around, and in (Y/n)'s eyes — and by extension, Magara's eyes, that's all that mattered.
The Black Knife was beginning to get a sinking feeling as the Mages led her downwards, towards an obscure cave with a ton of petrified corpses leading to it. Her hunch was being proven right before her eyes.
Entering the cave, within was a massive, tangled pile of snakes — Praetor Rykard — in the middle of a small pool of lava. All around were stacks upon stacks of dried-up corpses, almost making terrifying towards of life and death.
Standing before Rykard was Rennala, silent. She didn't speak, and the serpent didn't acknowledge her presence. Just like the Stealth Squad was able to, she was hiding her magical and physical presence.
To Magara's left was a legendary Great Spear, the Serpent Hunter. Energy built up from the countless of wielders lay silent within the blade, meant to be used for the sole goal of killing the Immortal God-Devouring Serpent that had eaten Praetor Rykard.
Sensing its usefulness in the future, Magara picked up the surprisingly heavy Great Spear and placed it within her shadow. It was a diminutive space when compared to (Y/n)'s entire shadow dimension, but it would let her hold it without worrying about it.
Magara looked up to Rennala, and the Carian Queen opened her mouth.
"My son... Rykard," she softly said, her voice caught in her throat.
The sight of her son, who had completely transformed, brought unexplainable emotions to her heart. He had given himself up to the God-Devouring Serpent, and this mass of snakes was now his body. It was questionable how much of his personality was left when it's compared to the God-Devouring Serpent's personality.
The largest head slowly rose, turning sky-high. The face of Rykard was revealed on the underside of the snake's neck. He smiled brightly at the sight of his mother.
"Mother! Have you come to devour the gods with us?" He laughed boisterously. It was undeniable that her presence pleased Rykard heavily.
Rennala stared silently, noting the glowing Great Rune seared on Rykard's form. She had seen such a sight before, with her ex-husband, Radagon. Based on the sights that the Full Moon had seared into her brain, the sign of a Great Rune on Rykard meant that the Greater Will was interfering.
However, she didn't care about that, not at this point.
She nodded solemnly, "Yes, my son. Let us devour the very gods, together."
Rykard's smile grew devilishly. His largest head started whipping forward, his mouth outstretched wide. As he closed in on Rennala's form, she closed her eyes. "I mean no harm, Shadow Sovereign. I simply must side with my family before I side with you."
And then, the snake ate the Queen of Caria and there was an utterly massive and totally blinding explosion.
-----
(Y/n) stared at the God-like being, feeling nervous sweat run down his face.
All the power of Rykard, the God-Devouring Snake, and Rennala was fused together and amplified by the blessing of the Great Runes. It wasn't even just Rykard's Great Rune of Union, but also Rennala's Great Rune of the Unborn.
As a result, a being that was about the same size as Greyoll, only with nine times as many heads and about ten times as much unpredictability, was created.
Even when compared to Godrick, Radahn, and Greyoll, this being was an entire other problem to take care of.
(Y/n) winced as he remembered the beast gulping down Smarag's corpse.
The Umbral Robes rolled uncomfortably, warning (Y/n).
Their message was clear: Rykard was getting stronger by the second, and if he wasn't handled properly, he could grow to a level that (Y/n) would be unable to overcome. With a huff, (Y/n) summoned his scythe, and Radahn casually let go of the floating lava, letting it fall into the ground as slag.
With the information Magara offered him, he knew where his allies were, so he could focus on who needed the most help first. Yura was the first person who he thought would need help, with the Academy of Raya Lucaria being destroyed so close to where he was last seen.
"Make sure my allies are safe!" He yelled, sending his order to every member of his 6000-plus army. He knew they'd join him next but prioritized his allies more.
Many of the Shadows didn't want to follow his orders, considering him of higher priority than his allies, btu they listened to him regardless of their individual desires. They considered themselves to be extensions of his will, and while they could act independently of his desire, it would be like betraying everything they stood for.
He hit the ground running as Radahn hit the ground with a huge whump.
In the distance, two of Rykard's heads locked onto him, with one of them being the Smarag-Influenced one. The other one had Rykard's face on the bottom, and began to speak, carefully tracking (Y/n)'s movements.
"You're the Shadow Sovereign, kekekeke! Have you come to join us in devouring the very gods?" He asked, his voice booming over the lake. Waves of power shot out in every direction, but (Y/n) dashed straight through them.
"Hell no! I'm not giving myself up to you!" (Y/n) yelled, denying the Demigod's wishes.
Rykard laughed boisterously, "You'll understand soon! We'll devour the very gods, together!"
Then, the magical hydra head opened its mouth and shot a beam towards (Y/n). It was dense, magical energy, but it easily eclipsed the speed and power of Greyoll's beams. However, (Y/n) knew he could dodge it in time, but he didn't move.
Right before it could connect, just feet away, there was a blur of movement, and the beam dispersed several feet away, hitting a mana shield the size of a small building.
He smiled as he glanced to his right, "Salem, you made it in time. Good work."
She grinned, as if bearing the weight of Rykard's magical beam was lightwork. The beam continued to hit the shield, but it was washed away casually. "Of course, my liege. It's my honor to assist you. Besides, if there's a Shadow to follow you into the jaws of a dragon, I believe I would be the best for the job."
(Y/n) matched her grin with his own. "Hahaha, oh, you were such a good decision to buff. Let's take him down, Salem!"
"Of course, my king!"
