Gambit

As the sun climbed overhead, its warm rays finally stirred Aurora from her deep slumber. With a soft moan, she blinked away the remnants of sleep, her hand instinctively reaching for her phone beside her. Fumbling slightly, she unlocked the device, her heart quickening with anticipation as she scrolled through the messages Max had sent her.

As Aurora absorbed the details of her new identity, her heart raced with a mixture of apprehension and determination. "Aurora Merwell," she murmured to herself, the name feeling both foreign and strangely familiar. With each syllable, she felt a shift, as if stepping into a new skin meant to shield her against the dangers that lurked in Enzo's world. It was time to embrace this new persona and navigate the treacherous path ahead with cunning and resilience.

"Thank you, Max," Aurora expressed her gratitude over the phone, her tone laced with genuine appreciation. "Your diligence is truly commendable. However, I have a question regarding the criminal history part," she added with assertion, determined to understand every aspect of her new identity.

Max's chuckle echoed through the line, a familiar sound that brought a sense of camaraderie amidst the seriousness of their conversation. "Ah, yes, the criminal history," he responded, his tone light yet knowing. "You need to look a little shady to gain entrance into a gangster's den. And in my defense, didn't you do just that at 17?"

Aurora couldn't suppress a wry smile at the memory. "Well, I did," she admitted, her tone tinged with amusement, "but I made sure not to get caught."

Max's laughter mingled with hers, a shared moment of levity in the midst of their preparations. "Exactly! That's precisely why you're perfect for this role. Embrace the past; it'll only enhance your credibility," he encouraged, his confidence in her abilities unwavering.

But as their conversation turned serious, Max's voice softened with concern. "Aurora, be meticulous with every step. If you sense danger, reach out to me immediately," he advised, his words a reminder of the perilous path she was about to tread.

Aurora assured him, her voice steady with determination. "I'll stay vigilant, Max. Thank you for your support."

With a shared understanding of the risks ahead, they ended the call, both aware of the gravity of their undertaking. As Aurora's head still heavy with the weight of the previous night's encounter, she dragged herself to the shower, the warm water serving as a soothing balm to her weary body and mind. With each droplet cascading over her skin, she reminded herself of the newfound identity she now wore like armor, a shield against the darkness that threatened to engulf her.

Her past, though shrouded in shadows, was not so different from the persona she now portrayed. Orphaned at the age of 12, she had learned early on to rely on her wit and resourcefulness to survive. But unwilling to dwell on memories that threatened to pull her under, she shifted her focus to the tasks at hand, her resolve unyielding as she prepared to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

"Cyber fraud at 17," Ralph exclaimed with a mix of amusement and surprise, his applause ringing out in the room as if Aurora had just pulled off a daring feat. "Well, someone's been a bad girl, huh?" he teased, shooting a playful glance at Enzo, his smirk widening with mischief. "Does that turn you on a bit?"

Enzo raised an eyebrow, his expression unamused as he attempted to downplay the situation. "Just a little fraud. Many have that at a young, hormonal age," he retorted, his tone dry and dismissive, though a flicker of amusement danced in his eyes.

But Ralph, ever the instigator, conveniently ignored Edgar's gestures to silence him. "No need to be so defensive, man," he remarked, his tone teasing. "Look at us. If anything, that's for the best. You don't have to worry about tainting her, at least."

Enzo's expression remained impassive, but the silence that followed spoke volumes about his thoughts on the matter.

Edgar, always the voice of reason, interjected with a touch of concern and rationality. "She was 17. There are no links to any crimes after that. Maybe it was a one-time thing."

However, Ralph's skepticism couldn't be contained. "Or it was the one time she got caught," he suggested, his tone laced with doubt and curiosity, earning curious looks from both Enzo and Edgar.

Continuing on his train of thought, Ralph gestured towards Aurora, his gaze scrutinizing. "I mean, just look at her. Why would she even come to a place like Astor? It's certainly not a company venture. And there happen to be no ties with any other gangs. Yet, she stays at an expensive place like Oasis. Where does an orphan raised in group homes get that kind of money from? Not unless she screwed some richies and is now on the run. In that case, this is a much more suitable situation for her," he concluded with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

His questions hung in the air , casting a shadow of doubt over Aurora's motives and background.

"So what do you suggest?" Edgar inquired, his voice laced with uncertainty.

Ralph's proud smile widened as he leaned forward, relishing in the intrigue of the situation. "For now, meet her. You know where she is. If you time it right, you'll have your little romantic rendezvous there," he suggested with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

Enzo nodded thoughtfully, considering the proposition carefully. His thoughts lingered on the complexities of the situation, but he couldn't deny the allure of meeting Aurora again.

Ralph couldn't resist a teasing remark, earning a chuckle from Edgar. "Oh, look at you, Enzo," Ralph began, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "The great leader, alpha of the pack, now lovesick over a girl four years younger. Just how far have you come?" he continued, feigning an emotional outburst that elicited laughter from the group.

"Then I guess I'll go and find that out," Enzo declared, determination coloring his tone.

However, Edgar quickly interjected, his voice firm with concern. "Now hold up," he said, raising a hand to emphasize his point. "We cannot be this cavalier about the situation. The woman clearly is still not out of the woods, and I am not letting you go there alone. It's Oasis, filled with all kinds of multimillionaires, crime lords, many of which happen to be our enemies."

Enzo's expression softened slightly as he considered Edgar's words. Despite his own resolve, he understood the validity of Edgar's concerns. In the dangerous world they inhabited, even a seemingly innocuous meeting could quickly turn into a deadly encounter.

A silent exchange passed between Enzo and Edgar, a silent acknowledgment of the bond and trust that existed between them.

"Fine, you can go and figure out your head or heart, whatever it is," Edgar relented, his tone firm but compassionate. "But we follow, from a distance. And you better have the earpiece on, at least until I am convinced she is not suspicious. And you do not get to argue about that."

"Okay, boss," Enzo agreed with a faint smile touching his lips as he turned to head up to his room. "I'll make sure to keep you updated."

As Enzo disappeared from view, Ralph and Edgar exchanged amused glances. They were both in awe of this unexpected side of their leader – vulnerable, yet determined to pursue what intrigued him. It was a reminder that even the strongest among them had their weaknesses and desires.

As Aurora stepped out of the shower, she noticed her phone buzzing incessantly with Max's calls. With a sigh , she picked up, only to be met with his tense voice on the other end. " Enzo just entered Oasis , and I am pretty sure it has something to do with you" he informed her urgently. Aurora's demeanor remained calm; it didn't surprise her that Enzo had found her so quickly. However , she couldn't help but applaud their efficiency.

"Well then, my friend, I guess I have an appointment with the handsome lord of Astor," she remarked casually.

Max's response was immediate and adamant. "No way in hell are you doing this alone. Wait till I reach there," he insisted firmly.

Aurora sighed , feeling a twinge of frustration. "Oh, come on , Max. I can handle this myself. Besides , this is my job," she argued.

Max resisted at once, his tone unwavering. "You do not get to have your way this time, Rory. Enzo is much bigger than anything you have dealt with, and I am on my way. No further arguments."

With Max's resolve clear, Aurora reluctantly acquiesced, knowing that his concern for her safety outweighed any desire for independence. She could only hope that they would be prepared for whatever awaited them at Oasis.
