The Rescue : Pam
It was just a regular day cleaning the barn, then I got the phone call. Once I answered the phone they said "Hello this is the ASPCA. Is this Pamela.". I questioned "Yes?". "Oh good. We need to speak to you about a rescue, a horse rescue to be exact. We know it's been a while since you rescued Diva. But we were wondering if you could help rescue this one too.". As the person on the phone said that my heart sank a little. "Ok.." I said "Where Will the rescue take place". "Tomorrow at 12:00" said the lady a little impatient now. "See ya then. Good bye" I said, then hung up the phone.
I had so many mixed emotions. I was happy because we would have a new horse at the barn. But then I was sad because I don't want to go through what happened with diva again. Well we will see how it goes.
The next day at 12:00...
We were at the scene of the rescue. When I went to the barn to take a look it was a sad scene. The barn roof was collapsing, the siding was all torn, the grass was not taken care of, but worst of all I heard the horse nicker to us. The horse sounded so sad. We walked in to the barn. The stable part was all cobwebs and dust. But when we made our way down to the arena the entrance was all boarded up. We removed the boards and I saw the horse. We walked to the top of the manure pile. The place was worse than I thought. The piles of manure were at least 8 feet high. The horse had to hold her head down because the ceiling was collapsing and the piles were too high. She looked like an older horse. It looked as if she was eating the falling rafters because they had bite marks in them. She was so skinny. You could see her ribs and her hip bones. Then I realized her hooves. The had not gotten trimmed in a while.
So we walked over to her she was not as jumpy as other rescue horses. She let me put a halter on her. We walked her out of the barn and onto the yard. When we thought she was calm we took a chainsaw and cut off the excess part of the hooves. She was such a bomb-proof horse. We loaded her in the trailer and brought her to my barn. We pulled into the long drive way and unloaded her from the trailer. For some reason they brought the parts of hoof we cut off to the barn. They were as big as my feet which are a size 11 in woman's. We brought her in to the barn and put her in the empty stall that used to be Divas stall. I had already put hay and water into the stall. I had never seen a horse drink a whole bucket of water that fast. As I closed the door she started to munch on her hay.
"Wow" said my dad. "What should we call her"said my husband Ron as he walked in. I said "Shadow first because of her dark seal bay coat, and second because she lived in the shadows for part of her life and was in a horrible place. But now she was brought out and has a hopeful start.".
We all chatted for a bit. Then Ron had to go to work and my dad wanted to go mow the lawn(again). I scheduled a vet visit and went on my way.
