Chapter 9
The town continued to carry on as it did before we arrived, paying no mind to the three of us who followed carefully behind Shinsou, making sure to remain alert.
Attempting an effort to not make eye contact with the civilians, I glanced quickly behind me to check and with relief recognized that Kirishima and Todoroki were doing the same.
The rest of the way to the building was silent, and when we came to a stop I took the advantage to see where exactly we were. A small street with a house in the centre not quite like the others.
The roof was a metallic silver and the walls a tinted white, the colour dull from old age. Underneath the window we're flower boxes, different types of flora creeping through the boxes threatening to touch the ground if it was given time.
Knowing I shouldn't be dawdling, I drew my gaze away to land on Shinsou who had proceeded to walk up the driveway and knock on the door twice before backing up slowly.
It had taken a few moments but it was not long before a creaking sound came from the door as it swung open mere seconds afterwards. A girl with green hair which draped across her head like vines had stood confidently in front of the doorway.
Her gaze was gentle yet stern, and as she glanced between the three of us, a bemused look had spread to her face before turning to face the one she was familiar with.
"Hello again Shinsou, always an honour." Kirishima furrowed his brow at the statement, though seemingly genuine there was something hiding behind her tone of voice that I couldn't place.
It felt as if something was off. Shinsou, however did not acknowledge it as he raised his hand to scratch his nose, a disinterested expression plastered on.
"Likewise, where's One?"
"She's just upstairs, you should be able to see her."
"I was almost hoping she was missing." The girl rising up into laughter, it echoed around the room joyfully at the comment before settling down once more, gaining back her composure.
"She can be a handful sometimes, but it looks like I should leave you to it. Until next time." A small huff escaped Shinsou's lips in acknowledgement before she had bowed once and hurriedly got out of the way letting us pass.
Her smile remained intact as Shinsou had past, but quickly melted as soon as we got close to her, eyes boring into us as we made our way up the staircase and towards where One was supposed to be.
"One's upstairs, just a heads up she's a bit perky." Shinsou's lips tilted upwards in a smile, reminiscent as he made his way up the staircase, the three of us in tow.
"Perky in what way?"
"She's different." With nothing else seemingly added to the description, I decided to drop the subject and followed up the polished wooden staircase.
Getting a sense of our surroundings I checked back to make sure Todoroki and Kirishima were remaining calm. If they began to panic it woudlve hurt our chances of finding Deku.
Todoroki looked straight up past me, eyes glaring daggers into the back of Shinsou's head and occasionally glancing down to see if there was anyone else in the room.
Clearly on alert, I shifted my gaze before he could realize and landed on Kirishimas face. His eyes were bright with interest as he looked around the building, obviously this being a new experience for him.
Catching my gaze, Kirishima smiled brightly back at me, the corners of his eyes crinkling. Smiling slightly back at the excited boy, I turned back around to be greeted with a door at the end of a hallway.
It was open merely a crevice, and as we walked further Shinsou raised his hand pushing the door open and leading us all inside. As soon as I past the entrance the hair on the back of my neck stood as I came face to face with what he referred to as One.
A girl with pink hair flying out in different directions sat in front of us on a leather chair with the arm rest covered in buttons. Her desk was a tawny shade of brown, and on top of it lay a massive computer with the screen showing she was looking to buy mechanic parts for some kind of experiment.
Tearing her gaze from her computer, we locked eye contact. The gleam in her eyes shining with interest as she pushed herself away from the monitor and towards the centre of her desk, propping her head up with her hands.
"Looks like you have brought me some company."
"I wouldn't have if it wasn't important."
"Well how can I say no to that? Sit." She had pressed a button as she spoke the last word, there was a sound of gears churning, and with a loud detested sound the floor had slid open and chairs had come out from the ground slowly.
A glass of water in each cup holder of the arm rest. Kirishima's eyes widening in disbelief, he waddled over in awe and sat down in one of the chairs. Turning to look at me, the corners of his mouth twisted upwards in an excited fashion before turning back towards One.
"May I ask why you're here?" Her hands had begun to roam her desk in boredom, along the way finding themselves in front of her plaque as she drummed her fingers along the desk, the name 'One' inscribed into the gold in the centre of the plaque.
"We're looking for someone."
"Someone? Well, we have lots of people here so you need to be more specific?"
"Izuku Midoriya." A lightbulb flickering suddenly in the middle of the night she leaned forward her face glowing.
"I see, well, they have a very pretty name but I'm afraid I haven't seen him! I memorized every citizen in this town and I haven't seen an Izuku Midoriya." I felt my chest sink as the words slipped from her mouth.
Cement filled inside my chest as I stared at the girl sitting in the chair. Her eyes didn't show any pity or sympathy, but there was a gleam of curiosity.
It felt like she was trying to dissect the situation they had put themselves in and I hated every minute of it. I hadn't even realized I had spoken before I heard my voice echo across the room.
"Are you sure?" Shinsou turning to look at me with a shocked expression, not expecting to hear someone say they doubted this person.
"Bakugo-"
"No it's quite alright, I understand what you're going through and if you really need reassurance I will try to give that to you. We have everyone on file, but we have never had an Izuku Midoriya. I'm sorry, but I'm sure you'll find him eventually!"
"How would you know?"
"Call it a gut feeling, I say you have a 60% chance."
"And why's that?" Todoroki piped up from the left side of me, a knot twisting in my stomach at the rude remark I jabbed Todoroki with my elbow to make him shut the fuck up as she continued.
"If any runaway was a smart runaway, the regiments would be where they'd hide."
The weight starting to ease off of my shoulders, I let them drop as a breath parted from my lips. One I hadn't realized I was holding. One seemed to grin at this, liking the reaction and relaxed her stature.
"I'll tell the other regiments to keep an eye out for Izuku Midoriya, you can stay somewhere in the town for the night and I should be able to hear from at least two of them by morning."
"Thank you so much for this." One shrugged her shoulders, not considering this to be anything thankful for and had already wandered back to her monitor, squinting at the screen as she mumbled the names of different mechanical parts back to herself, mispronouncing quite a few of them.
"Sure, but don't make me regret it."
"We won't." One flashing one last grin, she motioned with her hand for us to leave. Already enveloped in what she was doing on the screen, Shinsou had stood up and began to walk out. Taking my leave, I went quietly so as not to disturb her and the others followed route.
We had walked in silence for ten minutes before he had finally spoken up.
"I assume you're wondering where you're going?"
"Well it would be nice to know." A playful smile tugging at Kirishima's lips from the retort, Shinsou let out a small scoff as he walked across the street, feet tapping across the cobble in sync.
"It's a small little inn, has a cute little bar on the third floor. Can't really miss it."
"We didn't come here to drink."
"Just like we weren't supposed to talk back to One?" The retaliation caused half n half to fall silent, clearly displeased as he slowed down so he was no longer beside any of us.
A sigh of relief escaped Shinsou's lips as he ruffled his hair, tilting his head to stare at a building in front of us, he turned his grin giving away the slightest bit of excitement as he ushered us inside.
"I don't know about you guys but I'm exhausted. You shouldn't need to pay anything so don't worry about that, just make sure to get a room you're comfortable with. The clerk should be able to help you." Shinsou nodding his head in the direction of the clerk who waved meekly back, Kirishima had hurriedly told him not to worry and to get some rest as he strolled towards the clerk.
"Three separate rooms please." My eyes shutting as my shoulders relaxed, slight content had washed over me as time drew closer to when I would be able to fall asleep in a bed by myself.
If I'm lucky the beds will be super comfy, and Shinsou seems like someone who sleeps in so maybe we can get a few extra hours of sleep.... we've been going non stop all day too.
I'm so exhausted I can't wait to sleep by myse-
"Oh, I'm sorry, but we only have two rooms left for the night."
'No.....
"Oh that's fine then! We can share the two."
NO!
Todoroki and I hoping to protest, we watched helplessly as Kirishima grabbed the keys and made his way towards the elevator beckoning for us to follow.
The elevator was silent, but after the door had shut itself and I had felt the elevator begin to move, I slowly made eye contact with Kirishima glaring at him.
"So whose sleeping where?" The agitation clearly heard in Todoroki's voice, I looked over Kirishima who leaned on his right foot, anxiety shown clear as day across his expression.
"Uhhh....Rock, Paper, Scissors?"
"You've got to be shitting me."
