| Chapter 7: Midnight. |
I glared over at the hotel room and scanned the courtyard until I found a vending machine. Glancing around and seeing no one, I began to make my way across the courtyard and up to the vending machine, slid a few coins in, and selected a Pepsi.
I smiled at the sound of a glass clattering against the vending machine tray as I picked it up and pulled the top off of it. I made my way up to the Impala in the parking lot and took in the beauty of it.
"Hey, Dani." Came a voice from behind me, causing me to whip around. "Can we talk?"
I was pleased to see it was Dean.
"Sure." I nodded as he twisted a top off of a Pepsi as well walked up to the Impala and slid onto the hood, patting the batch of hood next to him, inviting me up. With slight hesitation, I humored him. "What's up?"
"Listen," He sighed, staring off into the soaked parking lot. "you have to know that I'm not used to people sticking around."
I raised an eyebrow and tipped the Pepsi to my lips.
"What I mean by that is," He sighed, gesturing with his hands. "I don't stick around very long, anywhere - at all," He paused as I nodded. "So the fact that you've hung around me this long, is different. I'm used to having to make my move right then and there, get some relief, and move on."
"So, Sam was right?" I teased, pulling my gaze off of him and admiring the reflective pavement.
"Yeah." He chuckled. "The thing is, Dani - I'm sorry if I came onto strong before...I didn't know you weren't single," He started counting on his fingers as he spoke. "I didn't know your Boyfriend would be in the same house, and I didn't know that we'd be working together either."
"Neither did I." I chimed, earning a grin from him.
"I just don't want you to get the wrong idea -"
"- even though you're telling me that the wrong idea you're portraying, you're aware of and you do it often...and Sam was right to warn me about it?" I giggled, earning a moment of pause from him.
Dean's face slowly came over with realization as he just realized he outed himself.
I shook my head and shoved my shoulder into his.
"Don't worry too much about it, Dean." I smiled, looking into his green eyes. "Nick's the only one that has a problem with it."
"Oh?" He raised an eyebrow, amused at my attitude.
"Listen," I sighed, taking a swig. "I come from somewhere, where...not a lot of people look twice at me." I elaborated, as I watched his head turn in my direction, and - for once - his eyes weren't tracing my body, they were studying my face. "So, I"m more than flattered...but I am with Nick."
"You are." Dean nodded, going quiet. "I shouldn't interject myself the way I have," He stated and I opened my mouth to respond, but was caught off guard by his finishing statement. "But I won't stop until you say."
I blinked at him, "Wh -?"
"- all you have to do is say the word," Dean stated, pulling his legs up so he could lean on his knees. "I know this isn't a priority to you right now either, what with Sierra missing and all - but I just wanted you to know where I stood."
I blinked at him again, quiet.
"Dean, we've only known each other for like two days -" I started.
"- and?" He pushed, raising his eyebrows.
"Also, if you had me - theoretically -" I smirked at his eyes. "- you wouldn't like it if someone else was moving in on me the way you are with Nick, would you?"
"I'd find it fun, personally..." He shrugged, sliding off the hood and turning to me. "...but I see your point."
I side off the hood now too, but didn't realize he was going to step towards me as soon as I did that, now he was almost close enough to press me against the Impala grill.
"I will say this though," He stated, more serious as I took in his eyes again. "There's something about you that won't allow me to quit and..." He paused, finding the words. "...and I'm curious, because usually it's a quick process, but there's something different about you." He reached up and brushed some hair out of my face and then caressed it. "Your soul is unique."
I blinked at him, feeling a beautiful moment coming on.
It had rained, the pavement was glass, the moon was shining down on us and he was already saying all the right words. I felt myself want to lean into him, but Nick's face flashed in my head.
"Dean," I sighed, taking his hand off my face gently and lowering it to our sides. "Maybe start slow, and small first -"
"- that's not me -" He uttered, causing me to flush red.
"- yeah, but that's me." I stood firm, letting go of his hand. "I've never had anyone hit on me as often or as hard as you, not even Nick. I'm flattered, but I am with Nick." I stated even more firmly.
"Yeah, you are." He sighed, as I walked around him to start to head back inside, but he caught me by the wrist and turned me around to ask, "But does he make you laugh?"
I paused, staring at him.
I frowned, pulled my wrist out of his grip, and made my way back inside.

"So, what you're telling me is that you want to go ahead of us, check out this place, and get an estimate of how many we're dealing with, if Sierra is even there - and then you'll come back to us, here and we'll go from there?" I asked, attempting to clarify as Sam nodded at every other word I said. "Sounds like a plan to me. You and Dean should probably head out after breakfast -"
"- No," Sam spoke firmly as Dean and Nick rejoined us in the booth with their cups of coffee. "One of us is going, but one of us is staying here."
"Then...what's the big deal?" I asked, over my cup of coffee.
"One of us is staying here, the other is going ahead but -" Sam paused, glancing at Nick.
"- but we can't go alone." Dean sighed, finishing his brother's thoughts.
"So, then -" started Nick as he looked from Sam to Dean, then to me. "- I don't like where this is going."
"Listen," Sam cleared his throat and nudged Dean to stop glaring at Nick before he spoke. "If Dani and I go, that'll leave you two here - which neither of you want that." Dean and Nick exchanged nods as he continued, "If Dean and I go, that'll leave you two here - which would be fine, other than the fact that Nick, you don't have any field experience."
Nick opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out for a moment, then he suggested, "So then, you and Dean go?"
"No can do." Smirked Dean, glancing at me.
"Why the fuck not?" Asked Nick, growling over the table.
Dean grinned at Nick's easy trigger as Sam spoke up again.
"Dean has a bad rep with Wave Wolves right now..." sighed Sam, glaring over at his brother. "...he seemed to have 'plucked' a woman in the state's pack that held a high position.
"Oh?" I raised an eyebrow, glancing at Dean - but only caught Nick's suspicious eye.
"Yeah, what can I say?" He giggled, staring down at his cup. "I can be irresistible."
"So, the only plan I see working is either leaving you two here," Sam stated, looking between Dean and Nick. "Or leaving you two here." He stated, looking between Dani and Dean.
I leaned back into the booth as Nick took my knee under the table.
"You did need some experience if you're going to be of any help..." I stated, looking over at Nick. "...no offense, you just didn't know this world existed until a few days ago."
"I know." He stated, allowing his eyes to flicker over at Dean. "I get it."
"Listen, Dean has already said he wouldn't do anything while we were gone." Sam ensured, earning a look from Dean - who told me this was a lie. "I'll protect you."
"I don't need protecting," Nick sighed, leaning over the table. "I need to be taught."
"Deal." Nodded Sam, as Dean peered across the table at Nick, then looked at me. "We'll head out in 20."
"Okay, you two figure that out -" I stated, getting everyone's attention at the table. "- I need a shower." I gestured for Nick to move out of the booth so I could get it. "So, leave me be for like 15 minutes."
"Right." Nick nodded, pulling me into him by the chin and kissing me hard before I disappeared out of the front door and made my way over to the hotel room.
