A New Life for Us
Logan found some comfort in knowing Patton was there, and Patton made it clear to him that he was always going to be there. The cabin started to feel like home, knowing what was watching him, knowing what moved things and made noises in the night. Sure, nothing really changed for Logan's mental health. His emotions would still change in the blink of an eye, he'd still wake up crying, he'd still fall weak. But someone was there to help him, pick him up when he fell, help him calm down and take control back.
The two seemed to have a pretty normal life, for a ghost and crazy man. They cooked together, cleaned, read, and, y'know. They acted like newlyweds. Logan felt much better than he had in a long time, even as flour covered his face.
"Why must you be like this?" Logan sighed, a puff of flour flying out of his mouth. The smile on his face betraying his tone.
Patton was having a laughing fit as he hovered a foot over Logan's head. The two had been trying to bake cookies when Patton had picked up a handful of flour and tossed it at Logan's face. Logan grabbed Patton from the air and pulled him back down to the floor. The two entwined their fingers as Logan read the next step in the recipe. Everything was calm once more, until Logan tossed a cup of sugar into Patton's hair.
"Hey! What the hell!" Patton yelped.
"One, payback. Two, your even sweeter now~" Logan smirked before kissing him on the forehead.
"Umm, no. You don't get off that easy!" Patton took a step back, a mischievous smile played over his face.
~~~
After three hours of play fighting, baking, and cleaning. They sat on the couch with a batch of still warm cookies. Logan suddenly felt a bit melancholy. He couldn't help but think of when he and Virgil would spend a whole day in the kitchen baking. They'd often get into play fights too, leaving clouds of flour filling the air along with the smell of dessert.
He only realized he was crying when Patton put a hand on his cheek. The two held eye contact for only a second before Logan turned away, wiping his eyes, muttering that he was fine. He could feel Patton's eyes, questioning him.
"It- I-" Logan stuttered as he tried to think of what to say. "Me and my brother used to bake together a lot, it was one of the only times we'd actually hang out with each other, without being forced together," Logan let out a weak laugh, "He was really good at it."
Patton sighed and pulled Logan into his chest with a hug. He rested his head in the crook of Patton's neck. Patton began to run his fingers through Logan's hair as he started to talk.
"I haven't heard much about him, your brother. The only things I've gleaned is that: You love him, he was really sweet, he would have made a great dad, and that you hate his husband with almost every bone in your body," Logan gave out a breathy laugh, nodding his head, "I guess I should add that he is a really good baker to my list. Anything else?"
Logan gave a sharp inhale before whispering weakly, "He was going to be an art teacher. He was a great artist."
Patton hummed, "Noted. Can I ask some questions?" Logan once again nodded and Patton started his inquiry.
"What is your brother's name?"
"Virgil Berrette, changed to Virgil Prince when he married."
"Who's older?"
"Me, by five years."
"How did him and his husband meet? Why do you hate him?"
"He met Roman in high school, the two of them hated each other. He'd come home and vent to me about Roman. I think in their first year of college I got a call from Vi saying that they had started dating. I was shocked. I had heard all of the negative, and whenever I saw the boy the negativity was only reinforced. I never stopped seeing the negative."
Patton nodded as Logan ranted before asking him the next question, "Do you think Roman had anything to do with his death?"
Logan shot up and looked at Patton like he was insane. "I may have hated Prince, but he loved my brother so much. He was insufferable, but I'd never even think he killed my brother. Roman was a disaster when Virgil went missing and even worse when he turned up d-" Logan choked on his words. Mad at Patton for even thinking that Roman could hurt Virgil.
Patton was taken aback, he'd never seen Logan look so upset and still be stable, "I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you!"
Logan looked at Patton for a second before pulling him into his lap. "I know, it's just! I- no one who's ever met Vi has hated him to a point where they'd kill him, so there's almost no suspects. All fingers went to Roman... or they went to me."
Patton was slightly shocked. He knew he could never be a cop, but after these few questions he knew neither of them could be guilty. Logan was distraught over the idea and Patton knew Logan was a smart man, if Logan thought Roman was innocent, he was. Patton tilted his head up to look at Logan.
"Wanna eat cookies?"
Logan chuckled but nodded, "Sure, love. Wait, can you even eat?"
"Let's find out!" Logan laughed at the giant smile that plastered Patton's face.
Patton reached for two cookies from the plate. He passed one up to Logan and sunk his teeth into the other. He chewed and swallowed. He giggled, he couldn't taste zip but he had just eaten for the first time in over a century, it felt weird. He looked back up at Logan who couldn't help but smile at Pat.
"I can eat!"
"Yes, you can."
And another one is done! So this one is pretty long and the end of fluff.
I'm sorry.
