• Never Her •
You were extremely excited to start your day, hoping that the students would not do anything to mess with your jocular mood. But as soon as you walked into the Great Hall, your smile quickly turned into a frown when you saw Severus sat next to the new Herbology professor, who was talking to him about something that you could not hear from where you stood.
You smiled when you felt Severus' gaze on you, and he gestured to the other seat next to him, wanting you to sit beside him like you always did. Your heart was at ease a little bit, knowing that he saved a seat for you. The Herbology professor stopped talking when she saw you, and you cringed internally when she scowled at you.
"Morning, Professor Cole."
You greeted her with a smile, ignoring the scowl on her face as soon as you sat next to Severus. The Potions Master gave you a nod, a small smile was plastered on his face when he saw you, and it did not go unnoticed by the new professor who questioned why Severus only smiled at you.
"Morning, Professor L/N. It's good to know that you're not skipping breakfast, considering how late you came today."
She said, her annoyance was as clear as the sky. She had only been teaching here for a few months, but you could tell that she despised you from the way she behaved around you. You just shrugged her off, not wanting to say something that you might regret later.
"Y/N is a punctual person, Professor Cole. I believe she has a good reason to be late today."
Severus defended you, and you chuckled under your breath when he called you by your first name, seeing the anger in the new professor's eyes.
"You're right, Severus. Some students asked me for help just now. I couldn't just let them be."
You replied, and your conversation with Severus started naturally, leaving Professor Cole with her thoughts. You could not help but feel relieved when he talked to you instead of the other professor. You knew you had no right to be jealous, Severus was not yours, but you would be lying if you say that you had no feelings for him and you would not let the new professor take him away from you.
However, you knew how hard it was when Cole was not giving up to have Severus' attention on her. She was always on his tail, even when he was going to see you after classes, and he did not know how to make her stop following him. He was getting tired seeing her face, and no matter how harsh he was with her, she stood on her ground to have his attention.
Nevertheless, Severus never said anything to you about her, making you feel as if he was preferring her company instead of yours. You reminded yourself that you had no right to be jealous over her, thinking that it was absurd if Severus ever returned your feelings, now that he had Professor Cole by his side who seemed to be better than you in everything. At least, that was what your foolish heart was telling you.
It was not unusual for you to visit him in his office, sometimes you would stay there until it was very late, just talking to him. You loved to spend your time with him, listening to his intelligence when he talked and laughing at his snarky remarks, never failed to humour you with his demeanours that other people would be intimidated with.
But that day, you were disappointed when you found Professor Cole in his office, and you started to think that your time with him was not special anymore that she was there. Severus was happy to see you, wishing that you could stay with him so that Cole would leave him but his heart was wrecked as he saw your smile dropped, the gleam in your eyes was nowhere to be found.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt anything—"
"No, Y/N. We were just talking about ingredients that I need for my potions."
Severus explained, not wanting you to think that he was talking about personal stuff with Cole. You nodded weakly, realising that she was teaching Herbology, and it meant she would have to work with Severus most of the time to provide ingredients for his potions.
"Please come in, Y/N."
He added, as he saw how uncomfortable you were to be there. You chewed on your bottom lip, knowing that you should not be so dejected and disappointed when you realised he was very close with the Herbology professor, but you could not help yourself. He had a special place in your heart, thus it hurt you to see him so happy with another woman.
"It's fine, Severus. I'll come back later."
You sent him a smile, but Severus knew you too well to recognise that it was not genuine, and he knew you had misunderstood everything. He was going to walk over to you when Professor Cole decided to put her hand on his arm, and that was enough for you to take your leave, did not want to torture your heart even worse.
You did not talk to him after that day, telling yourself that you should forget your feelings for him, and you had to stop spending your time with him if you wanted it to be easier. Thus, that was what you did. You sent him a half-hearted smile whenever he glanced at you, but you tried your best to chase your feelings away, not wanting to be trapped in a one-sided love with your colleague.
On the other hand, Professor Cole took it as a chance for her to get closer with the Potions Master, now that you were no longer in the picture. The other teachers and even the students could see how hard she tried to replace you, as they could see she walked with Severus to classes and talked to him during meals, doing things that you used to do with him. The only difference was, Severus did not like her presence, not even a little bit.
Your students were aware of how you were slowly changing as they could see the sorrow in your eyes, that used to be sparkling in joy every time you teach them. They might be foolish at times, but they knew how close you were with Severus and they could see how you had grown apart from each other since Professor Cole came, and they hated it. They despised how devastated you were and how grumpy Snape was, now that you were not always with each other anymore.
You might think that it was nothing to distance yourself from the Potions Master, but the students knew it was a disaster. Every time they came from Herbology class and got into Potions, Professor Snape would be more cold than usual, taking off points even from his own house, shocking everyone with how enraged he was. They also could no longer bear the sadness that lingered in the air every time they stepped into your class, missing your cheery laughter and your genuine smile, which usually would make the class more interesting rather than dull.
So they decided to talk to you and the student was no one else but Draco Malfoy. You knitted your eyebrows in confusion when the boy wanted to stay in your class after his classmates walked out, thinking that he must had some serious matter to discuss with you.
"Are you sad, Professor L/N?"
He asked, without thinking twice, and you were taken aback with his question. There was no doubt that Malfoy tolerated you and Snape compared to the other teachers, and it was not an exaggeration to say that he liked your ways of teaching. He was always hostile with the others, but it was a different case when he talked to you. Hence, he never wanted this situation to go on forever.
"Why would you say that?"
"Professor Snape is not happy too, you know."
He simply said, knowing that you would understand what he was saying. You sighed when the Potions Master was mentioned, suddenly a rush of feelings swarmed your heart, reminding you of how much you cared for him.
"I believe he's fine, Mr Malfoy."
"If this is because of Professor Cole, you have to know that she is nothing compared to you. Her class is incredibly boring and I hate her."
He said bluntly, making you chuckle softly, shaking your head at his words. You could not believe that he was insulting the other teacher just to make you feel better about yourself. The boy surely had a strange way to comfort his favourite teacher.
"Hate is a strong word, Draco."
You reminded him, a smile was dancing on your lips. He raised his eyebrows and a smirk was cracked on his lips, not taking back his words because he meant every single one of them. You went on your day happily after talking with Draco, contemplating to see Severus, perhaps it would be better rather than to distance yourself from him.
You hoped to see him during dinner, walking into the Great Hall confidently, nodding at students who smiled at you. You gazed at Severus, and he seemed surprise to see you smiling at him, missing the way your lips curled into an enchanting smile.
But your heart dropped when Cole pulled him in for a kiss, wretched to see the sight in front of you. You were not the only one who was flabbergasted when she kissed him, as the teachers and the students gasped in shock, some started to whisper among themselves. You left the Great Hall with tears in your eyes, before you could see Severus pushed her off him, glaring daggers at her imprudent action and scolding her for kissing him.
You walked back to your room, unable to face the dreadful truth that he was with her, but your steps came to a halt when someone grabbed your wrist. Your eyes widen when you saw Severus and he pulled you against his chest, stopping you from walking away. You did not hear him coming, perhaps your mind was fogged with your own agony.
"Let me go, Severus."
Your voice broke, failing to hide your dejection. You could almost hear the thud of his heart against his chest, as he left you no room to get away from his arms.
"Why did you leave?"
He asked, frowning, and you wanted to slap him across his face for being so oblivious with your feelings for him. You shook your head, smiling sadly at the older professor who had worry in his eyes.
"Can't you tell how much I love you, Severus?"
Your voice was fragile, and it shattered Severus' heart to see the tears in your eyes. He sighed, knowing you must had been so heart broken to see Cole kissed him, and he had to explain everything to you. He never wanted to hurt you intentionally.
"Just go to her. Let me be. I'll be fine on my own, Severus."
You sound so defeated that Severus cursed himself for leading you to be in this state, and he would do anything to prove to you that he loved you. You were surprised when he wrapped his strong arms around you, pulling you into his warm and loving embrace.
"I love you, Y/N. Not her."
He whispered into your ears, and you melted in his embrace, burying your face into his chest as you let him hold you.
"Why did you kiss her?"
"I didn't. I pushed her away, Y/N. Please trust me."
He almost begged, and it tormented him when he saw tears falling from your eyes, all because of him. He quickly wiped your tears away, kissing your forehead softly to assure you that he was there with you and not her.
"I didn't mean to hurt you. I didn't want her, Y/N. I love you and I need you."
You nodded at his words, a smile found its way on your face, believing that he never meant to give you the wrong idea. It was always been you, and never her in his heart.
"I love you, Severus and I don't want her to steal you from me."
You said, smiling timidly as you thought of how imprudent it sounded. But to Severus Snape, your sweet words sunk deeper within his mind, sending warmth and affection wrapped around his heart. He shook his head, hugging you tightly that you grinned when he rested his chin on top of your head.
"I'm all yours, Y/N."
