Severus was wrecked when you walked out of his life. He was completely oblivious at the fact that he needed you to survive, and that was until you decided to leave.
It was alright, he had Lily with him, that was what he thought.
But then everything started to fall apart. His life was crushing down like a paper plane whilst he watched as you got your life together as you should. You cared more about yourself now that you were not with him. Severus could see what he had lost, and it was not an exaggeration to say that he was heartbroken.
He loved you, but he was a fool for not realising it.
Years later he found himself being alone, sad and angry at himself for letting you go. It had been so long since he last saw you since you both graduated from Hogwarts. And he was longing to see you again every day of his life.
But when he finally saw you again, he wished he did not.
You looked as beautiful as ever, so elegant and charming that he almost fell on his knees in front of you. Your enchanting smile reminded him of how you used to smile at him during old days in Hogwarts, assuring him that you would always be there for him.
Unfortunately, your smile was not for him. Severus' heart was ripped out of his chest as his dark eyes landed on your wedding band that you wore so proudly.
His breath hitched when Lucius wrapped his arm around your waist, smiling down at you like you were his whole world. Perhaps that was how Lucius really felt about you, you were his world.
Severus knew he would never be happy again. Not when you were married to another, while he was there, blaming himself for hurting you whilst all you ever did was helping him through everything.
The Potions Master knew the day would come, the day when he had to meet your child. But he was not ready, he would never be ready to know that you had a family of your own. You were happy without him.
As Draco Malfoy came to Hogwarts, the professor's heart almost stopped when he saw your son. A small smile was cracked on his lips, a part of him was happy to know that you had a good life. But his smile dropped when he realised that you had a good life with another man instead of him.
Severus had to admit that Draco was a smart boy. As much as he hated to say it, he was definitely his favourite student. The boy always managed to make him so proud, and knowing that he was your child, it just made Severus wanted to protect Draco just as much as you used to protect him when he was bullied during his school years.
"My mother said she was your friend."
One day, Draco had said to him as he was helping the professor at his office. Severus was flabbergasted to you mentioned him to your son, but he nodded.
"Yes, that's true. What did she say about me?"
Severus was curious. He thought that you forgot about him. He thought that you hated him with all of your heart. Apparently not.
"She said that you were her best friend. She would never forget you."
Draco said casually, not knowing how much his words were affecting Severus. Severus could feel the lump on his throat and he looked away from your son.
You were so kind to him. After all he had done to you, you were still so nice about him. How could he call himself your best friend if all he ever did was hurting you? He was never there for you. He was selfish and you knew it. But still, you never talked badly about him.
Severus thought he would never see you again, but then fate brought you to him. You came with your husband to see Draco during the quidditch game. It was the closest Severus had been with you since the last day you talked to him. It frightened him to know that you were happy to see him, he was expecting you to scowl and look away but you did not.
"It's nice to see you, Severus. How are you?"
Your overly sweet voice brought tears in his eyes and he just realised how much he missed you. He missed those days when you would be cuddling in his arms, while you listened to him telling you about his days. Clearly, he never gave you a chance to tell him about your day. It was always about him, and he regretted that.
"I'm fine. It's nice to see you too."
Severus managed to get the words out and he grimaced at how he managed to lie. He was not fine, not at all. He was far from being fine. He loved you and he wanted you. But it was not like he could say that to you now.
You sent him a smile, and his heart swelled. Severus could not focus at the game anymore. You looked so content. He knew Lucius Malfoy could provide you with wealth that he could never give but this was different. The joy radiated off you because of love and adoration. He knew you were truly happy. He could see it in your eyes as you looked at him. Your smile was not forced, it was genuine.
He lost you, his precious angel that was sent for him— the one that he took for granted hence you were not his anymore.
"Are you alright, Professor?"
Severus was taken aback with Draco's question. The other students had left the class but Draco could sense that something was troubling the Head of Slytherin's heart. Severus was not expecting it coming from Draco, but then again, he was your son. No matter how harsh he might seem, he must had inherited your kindness.
"Why do you ask?"
"Just asking. You seem troubled."
Severus shook his head and dismissed Draco, but not before giving him a smile. Something that Severus Snape did not give to just any student. Almost all students knew that Severus Snape had a soft spot for Draco Malfoy, without actually knowing the backstory of it.
At Draco's concern, Severus could not help but be reminded of you. You always managed to see right through him. No matter how high he built his wall, you would always reach out for him. You were always there and he had never been alone because of you.
Once again, Severus found his life torturing him as the new students came in and he saw a girl with a familiar smile. He noticed as Draco's face light up, a smirk was dancing on his lips when the girl walked into the Great Hall with other first year students.
"Draya Malfoy."
As Professor McGonagall called out the girl's name, Severus breathed in sharply. He thought seeing Draco was shocking enough for him, but when he saw your daughter, he knew he had lost you forever.
His happiness was happy with somebody else. It had been so many years, and yet Severus was still hoping for a miracle.
Draya Malfoy was sorted into Slytherin, as expected, students and teachers were busy talking about how she was Lucius Malfoy's little princess. If anyone dare to lay a hand on Draco, his father would take an immediate action on it but now with Draya, everyone was sure that they had to be more careful.
Perhaps your daughter inherited the platinum blonde hair and grey eyes from Lucius, but her soft smile and her humble attitude clearly came from you. And for that, everyone was grateful.
While she might have the same hair as Draco, her antics were totally different as she mirrored you a lot. She caused no problems and she respected everyone without any conditions.
She was a blessing, and Severus always made sure that she was protected and safe, just like how he watched over Draco since his first year. And he would continued to do so until your children left Hogwarts.
That was the least he could do to repay for the times when you used to watch over him during old days.
It felt as if it was just yesterday when you met him in the Slytherin common room, asking his name and giving him your sweet smile that he would remember until the day he die. But time did not work that way.
The devastating news was all over the place and everybody was shocked including him. Y/N Malfoy had passed away from a disease that could not be cured. Upon seeing your picture on the Daily Prophet, Severus felt tears welled in his eyes. He did not realise that he was crying until his tears dropped on the newspaper, showing how much your death was crushing him.
You were gone. Forever.
There was no way of him meeting you again. He could never see you smile at him, or even ask him about his day anymore. You left, not just him, you left everyone else too.
Then it struck him. You left your husband and your children too. Your children that Severus cared about as if they were his own.
Severus wanted to die. There was no point of him living this world anymore. But then he realised he wanted to watch over your children. He wanted to make sure that they were alright.
Hence, that was what he did. He knew Draco and Draya were wretched. But he made sure they eat and sleep properly, despite their protests and all, the professor managed to make sure they did not fall sick from sorrow of losing their mother.
You used to do it to him. When he was down in the drains, you were the one who pulled him up. You made sure he eats and has enough sleep. He was still alive because of you.
Severus noticed the changes in Draco's demeanour, just like how Draya was slowly changing too. Somehow he knew it was not just because of your death, but also because of your bereaved husband, Lucius.
That day, the Potions Master found Draco and Draya talking in the empty hallway. Severus could see the pain in your children's eyes and it hurt him to know that he was not helping.
He watched as Draco hugged his little sister tightly before he left her there with her own thoughts. Severus approached her, and she forced a smile when she realised that he was there.
"Anything that I can help you with, Professor?"
Severus shook his head, a small smile was on his face.
"I want to help you. I know you and your brother are having problems. Tell me."
He said softly, the tone that he would only use on your children, his favourite students. Draya sighed and nodded.
"We don't know if going home is a good thing now."
She muttered, tears flooded her eyes. Severus frowned, the break was coming thus the students would be going back to their home. The Malfoys never stayed in Hogwarts during their break. What had changed now?
"Why is that, Draya?"
"It doesn't feel like home anymore since..."
Draya smiled sadly and Severus understood what she was referring to. Your death must had been a horrifying change to your home, especially to your lovely children.
"You have to go home. You still have your father."
Severus began, but he knew there was something about Lucius that was messing up with the children's minds as well. Your husband must had been devastated just as much as them.
"Father has changed. He is not the same anymore. He is getting distant and cold. Even with me and he was never distant with me before."
Draya poured out her heart, letting tears stream down her face. Severus' heart broke at the sound of her cries, and he realised Draco must felt the same but he was not as open as his sister.
"He missed mother so much. If she was still here, our family would be much happier."
She whispered, wiping her tears away as she composed herself. Severus listened, knowing that you would always listen to him before. Now was the time that he listened to your children, hoping that it would help them.
"It's not easy to forget someone that we love so much..."
Severus muttered under his breath, hot tears was in his eyes. He put his hand on her shoulder comfortingly and gave her a nod.
"Your mother would always be here with you. As long as you carry her within your heart."
Draya found herself smiling genuinely and she nodded vigorously. Her professor was right. She needed time to heal, but she knew she would be fine. Draco would be fine, and her father would be fine too.
"Thank you, Professor."
Severus just watched as she walked away from him. He took a deep breath and shut his eyes tightly. It was painful for him to go on his life without you.
But after all you had done to him in the past, he felt as if he owed it to you to give it back to your children. He did not appreciate you before, but now he had the chance to make sure that your children were appreciated.
After all, he had his moments with you, the happiest moments of his life.
And you had your happiest moment in your life without him but that was fine. Severus was glad to know that you lived a happy life and you were loved when you died. After all, your happiness was the most important thing to him.
Your happiness— the one thing he did not even care about when he was young and reckless. That was his fault. But he knew you would be happy if he took care of your children. Severus would do that, just for you.
