XIV. Awkward Together

"Honestly, I don't come here to hang out with you anymore." Spencer stated, laying on the floor of Alfred's house. Apollo laid next to him, licking his face eagerly, his tail wagging vigorously as Spencer rubbed his face and laughed. "I come here for your dog!"

Shelby shrugged, watching them from the couch. "That's fair."

Alfred raised a brow from next to Shelby, looking up from his Twitter. "Why are you always here? Has anyone considered that it's weird for me to see the male version of my girlfriend all the time?"

"Alfred, don't make things weird." Shelby scolded, elbowing him lightly.

"No, no, he's right." Spencer sighed, turning and laying on his back, Apollo still licking his cheek. "Sorry, Alfred. I just- after I broke up with Amelia, and without being able to talk to Dennis right now... I really have no where else to go unless I want to move to Poland."

Shelby's eyes lit up. "We should move to Poland together!"

"No! No." Alfred yelled, pointing to Spencer, and then Shelby warningly. "Neither of you are moving to Poland. Shelby, you are never moving out of the United States."

"Okay, mom." Shelby laughed. "Obviously, we're joking around."

"Yeah, totally joking." Spencer said, forcing a laugh.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed as a text came through. Spencer raised a brow, taking out his phone and reading the text.

His heart about stopped when he saw it was Dennis.

Sorry I haven't said anything since you told me bro, shit's been going down. Not much of an excuse... Just want you to know I ain't mad or anything, okay? Everything's chill between us I promise, you're still my bro.

"Spencer, you look like you're gonna cry. Who is it?" Shelby inquired. Spencer sat up and passed Shelby his phone. She read over the text, Alfred peering over her shoulder and reading it for himself.

Shelby smiled as Alfred shook his head. "Sorry bro, looks like you just got friend-zoned."

"Spence, this is great! He's talking to you! He's not mad!" Shelby cheered, handing back his phone.

Spencer's smile was happy, but strained. "I know! But... He said some shits been going down. What do you think that means?"

Shelby's smile faded. "I have no idea to be-" Suddenly, Shelby's phone buzzed as well, and she pulled it out, reading the text she received. "It's from Dreamz." She announced, her eyes flying over the words as they widened. "Dennis broke it off with Julchen."

Spencer's jaw dropped. "What?"

"Yeah, he talked to her about everything. And... They're done." She looked up at Spencer. "Holy shit."

"That's good, though, right?" Alfred asked when Spencer's expression turned from confusion to panic and fear.

"No." Spencer shook his head, standing up abruptly and startling the dog. "No, I can tell you without even talking to Dennis that that break up did not go well. Julchen has never been... Understanding, or even supportive, of some of the stuff Den goes through. A break up..." He was breathless and panicked. "I have to go make sure Dennis is okay."

"But you haven't talk to him since you told him you like him." Shelby pointed out. "Are you sure you can-"

"Stop." Spencer lifted his hand, becoming irritated. "Don't treat me like a little kid. I know it's gonna give me anxiety, but this is my best friend. I need to talk him out of whatever Julchen put in his head."

Shelby sat back, slightly surprised by the harshness in his voice. Spencer instantly felt bad. "Shelbs-"

She raised her hand, shaking her head. "No, don't apologize. Just go. You gotta do what you gotta do."

Spencer nodded, before walking hastily to the door and leaving.

"I just can't look at him without seeing your face." Alfred huffed.

Shelby snorted. "Just can't get me off your mind, eh Jones?"

Alfred laughed, pushing her lightly. "Shut up!"

Spencer hopped out of his car, making his way to Dennis' apartment. He knocked on the door, his body completely numb with nerves, his throat burning. After a few minutes of just pure anxiety churning over and over again in the bottom of his stomach, it finally opened, and Dennis leaned against the doorway, looking at Spencer in surprise. "Spencer...?"

Dennis didn't look that hot. His hair was unkept, and his eyes were slightly red and puffy. Inside the air was stale and stuffy. His face was even paler than usual, and he looked thinner than ever. "Den. I'm so sorry. I would have been here sooner, but I had-"

"No, I'm sorry, Spencer, I shouldn't have dropped off like that after you told me that-"

"We don't have to talk about that." Spencer interrupted.

"Yes, we do. I heard about your break up with Amelia. I can't help but feel-"

"Dennis." Spencer said in a serious voice as his friend began hyperventilate slightly. "Shut. Up. I'm serious." Dennis shut his mouth obediently. "If I blamed any of that on you, I wouldn't be here right now."

Dennis seemed to relax slightly at that comment, taking a deep breath and trying to calm down. Spencer was still frowning. "I heard about you and Julchen."

Instantly, Dennis's face dropped. "Yeah..."

Spencer's crossed his arms. "And I can imagine that went beautifully."

"Just about." Dennis mumbled, turning back into his living room. Spencer bit his lip, not sure if Dennis wanted him to follow, but pushed passed his nerves telling him not to follow and stepped inside, shutting the door behind him. He followed Dennis to the couch, where his face was buried in his hands. Spencer sat down next to him, concern donning his features.

"You know how Julchen was." Dennis muttered through his hands. "She had a lot of trouble understanding that it wasn't me being rude or uninterested that kept me from being the boyfriend she wanted. She didn't understand that it was something I couldn't help. She thought I was breaking up with her because I didn't want to put effort into the relationship anymore, that I just didn't care about her enough. I wasn't trying to be selfish... I thought, it was unfair to keep her in a relationship that she was obviously unhappy in. I wasn't what she wanted, or needed to be honest. But she was convinced it was because I wasn't committed enough, she thought I was just being lazy in breaking up with her." Dennis dug his fingers into his hair.

Spencer's brows furrowed. "If I'm being honest, which you know I have to be, what you and Julchen had wasn't the most healthy relationship. Her inability to understand anything that went on with you mentality was destructive to both of you. She convinced herself she wasn't enough and she convinced you that you were the problem, that you were the bad guy. But you're not, Dennis." Spencer muttered, placing a hand on his friend's knee, knowing Dennis didn't like his back and shoulders being touched. "It would have been crueler to both of you to keep that relationship together. It was toxic, and I think you knew that."

Dennis lifted his face from his hands, leaning back and sighing sadly. "What's wrong with me, bro?"

"Literally nothing, bro." Spencer said firmly.

Dennis smiled slightly, despite his eyes still holding a sad light. "You're the best, bro."

Spencer leaned back on the couch, exhaling in relief at a return to normalcy. "I know, bro."

Dennis snorted. "Shut up, bro."

Spencer glanced at Dennis. "When you dye your hair, bro?"

"Eh, recently, bro." Dennis shrugged.

Spencer smiled, his eyes going over Dennis' head. "I like it, bro."

Dennis raised a brow, managing to smile slyly as he leaned closer. "Why do I have a feeling "like" is an understatement, bro?"

Spencer's face instantly turned red as he pushed Dennis's face away. "Don't make things awkward, bro."

Dennis shrugged, leaning back on the couch again and closing his eyes. "Spencer, bro, we were meant to make things awkward together."

Spencer shook his head, smiling. He was fully aware that it would take Dennis a bit to recover from the harsh words Julchen had undoubtably thrown at him during the break up, but if Dennis was cracking jokes like that, at least he was feeling a bit better. But Spencer wouldn't pry Dennis to tell him everything that was said until he was comfortable doing so, so for now, he would just be there as a comforting presence. When Dennis was ready to tell Spencer, he'd be there, ready to listen.

Because that's what friends are for.
