XIII. Spencer in the Bathroom [BMC Crossover]
Song, "Michael in the Bathroom", from Be More Chill (The Musical). Animatic by trash cass
Spencer leaned against the door of Mathias's bathroom. He was currently at the big Halloween party, but he wasn't having any fun at all. Dennis had just run in here to escape Francine, and he could actually see Spencer for some miraculous reason. However, Dennis was uninterested in anything Spencer had to say, and left the bathroom, commenting about how Spencer was a loser to someone outside.
"I am hanging in the bathroom at the biggest party of the fall." Spencer sang, trying to calm himself down. "I could stay right here or disappear, and nobody'd even notice at all..." He muttered, rubbing his arm and squeezing his eyes shut, leaning his head back on the door.
He sighed, moving from the door to the sink, and staring ahead at his reflection. His sweater donned the word "Creeps". He was supposed to match with Dennis. "I'm a creeper in a bathroom 'cause my buddy kinda left me alone." He looked bitterly towards the door. "But I'd rather fake pee than stand awkwardly, or pretend to check a text on my phone."
Dennis's reflection appeared in the mirror besides Spencer's, and Spencer smiled, reaching out and placing his hand on the cool surface. "Everything felt fine... when I was half of a pair." Spencer's brows furrowed as he realized that this wasn't real. "Now through no fault of mine," he moved his hand across the mirror, and Dennis's reflection glitched, before disappearing entirely, "there's no other half there!"
Spencer squeezed his eyes shut, turning away from the mirror and crossing his arms across his stomach, like he was trying to hold himself together. "Now I'm just Spencer in the bathroom, Spencer in the bathroom at a party... Forget how long it's been." He admitted, glancing at his phone. His screensaver was a picture of Dennis and him. Spencer cringed. "I'm just Spencer in the bathroom, Spencer in the bathroom at a party." A knock sounded at the door, and Spencer jumped in panic. "No you can't come in!"
Spencer lifted himself onto the sink, picking at the cocking sealing the acrylic surface to the granite top. "I'm waiting it out 'til it's time to leave, and picking at grout as I softly grieve! I'm just Spencer, who you don't know, Spencer flyin' solo, Spencer in the bathroom by himself! Oooooh, by himself!" He sang, squeezing his eyes shut and grimacing.
Spencer glared at the door, his eyes filled with tears. "I am hiding, but he's out there, just ignoring all our history!" Spencer could picture Dennis now, the upgraded Squip slowly turning him into a popularity monster, talking with all the cool kids like it was no big thing. Spencer looked to his feet, his face flushing slightly. "Memories get erased, and I'll get replaced, with a newer, cooler version of me!"
Suddenly, a girl passed the bathroom, belting out a song rather loudly. Spencer smiled slightly. "And I hear a drunk girl sing along to Whitney through the door- 'I wanna dance with somebody!'" Spencer sang along, kicking his legs out slightly and rocking back. Then he paused, his smile instantly dropping as he gripped the edge of the countertop hard. "And my feelings sink, 'cause it makes me think: now there's no one to make fun of drunk girls with anymore!" He cried, jumping down and moving to sit on the edge of the tub.
"Now it's just Spencer in the bathroom, Spencer in the bathroom at a party..." he sang through gritted teeth, the tears beginning to spill over onto his cheeks. "I half regret the beers. Spencer in the bathroom, Spencer in the bathroom at a party..." he tried to catch his breath. His throat was starting to close and his chest was tightening, "as I choke back the tears! I'll wait as long as I need, until my face is dry, or I'll just blame it on weed, or something in my eye!" He shouted, violently wiping his cheek of the moisture, but it was quickly replaced by a second round. "I'm just Spencer, who you don't know, Spencer flyin' solo, Spencer in the bathroom by himself!"
"Knock, knock, knock, knock," Spencer echoed as loud knocking sounded on the door. His heart started beating as fast as a hummingbird's wings, "they're gonna start to shout soon. Knock, knock, knock, knock," it was even louder now, "oh hell yeah, I'll be out soon!" He shouted, trying to keep his voice steady and failing.
"Knock, knock, knock, knock!" The voices shouted in Spencer's ears. He covered them.
"It sucks you left me here alone-"
"KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!"
Spencer felt his throat close and his whole body began to shake. "Here in this teenage battle zone-"
"CLANG, CLANG, CLANG, CLANG!"
Tears were streaming down Spencer's face as the voices screamed louder. He stumbled to the cold title floor on all fours. He couldn't breathe. "I feel the pressure blowing up-"
"B A N G, B A N G, B A N G, B A N G!"
Spencer crawled towards the sink, using all his energy to stand up. He gasped for air. "My big mistake was showing up-"
"S P L A S H, S P L A S H, S P L A S H, S P L A S H!"
Spencer managed to turn the sink on and splashed water on his face. The cool sensation on his skin seemed to help clear his mind, and he took a deep, but shaky breath. "I throw some water in my face, and I am in a better place." Spencer began slowly to the door. "I go to open up the door-" Spencer paused, realizing everything was now silent, "but I can't hear knocking... Anymore."
Spencer wandered back over to the sink, leaning against it. His head was pounding now and his chest was still fairly tight. He squeezed his eyes shut.
"And I can't help but yearn... For a different time..." Spencer looked up, seeing his own reflection, and he grimaced as he realized just how alone he really was. "And then I look in the mirror, and the present is clearer, and THERE'S NO DENYING, I'MMMM JUST-"
Spencer broke down in tears, sobbing into his hands as he backed away from the mirror, leaning against the wall and shuddering as he cried. Finally, he lifted his hands from his face, wrapping his arms around his chest as if to comfort himself. "... At a party. Is there a sadder sight than-"
More tears fell down Spencer's face as he hummed in an attempt to stop himself from breaking into a full fit again. "Spencer in the bathroom at a party. This is a heinous night. I wish I stayed at home in bed watching cartoon shows, or wish I offed myself instead, WISH I WAS NEVER BORN!" He shouted at himself, glaring through his tears at his reflection that he could still see from across the room.
"I'M JUST SPENCER WHO'S A LONER, SO HE MUST BE A STONER! RIDES A PT CRUISER, 'GOD HE'S SUCH A LOSER'!" He screamed, quoting his ex-best friend. "SPENCER FLYIN' SOLO, WHO YOU THINK THAT YOU KNOW, SPENCER IN THE BATHROOM BY HIMSEEELLLFFFF! OOOH, BY HIMSEEELLLFFFF! OOOH, BY HIMSEEELLLFFFF!"
Spencer took a deep breath. He slid down the wall, sitting and pulling his legs into his chest. He sighed, "All you know about me is my name. Awesome party, I'm so glad I came." He muttered, before burying his face in his knees.
