Chapter 40
The arrival of the two Von Brandt family members came with much celebration and excitement. Hazel, in particular, had been anticipating that day for months, and the second they and Nredoza stepped out of the StrataNova, she nearly jumped on them to give them a huge koala hug.
"I've been waiting for this for so long," Hazel said, squeezing her mother tightly.
"Us too," she replied, stepping back to see her daughter's face again.
Remembering what Anatoly told her the day before, Hazel tried her best to help them out with everything, from finding a home to moving some of their possessions into it. However, no matter what she did, she couldn't get whatever Anatoly had planned off of her mind. Her mind raced to all sorts of conclusions, but none of them seemed right. Either way, she too had some plans for the end of the day, or the closest thing they could get to it with twenty-four hours of sunlight per day.
They chose the house right next door to Hazel's, which she didn't mind at all. With her last name being changed to fit her father's side, it sealed up the little bit of distance that had arose from it. She spent a full six hours fixing the placement of furniture and moving all of TJ's belongings into his room. Akina didn't bring too much, other than a few special photos and some of her mother's old jewelry, so that wasn't a problem at all.
Hazel walked out onto the house's deck and realized that it was facing her own. She couldn't help but grin. It just made everything infinitely better in every way. Things were going well, and she felt like there was nothing that could spoil her mood, not even a premature arrival of Dymo.
It was hard for Hazel to get used to the fact that the sun wouldn't set during summer and that she wouldn't see the stars until late September. It was so bright all the time, and it suddenly became clear as to why her house had a room with no windows. It was the closest thing she had to night in the warmer months. No matter what her relationship with the stars was at that time was, it was nice to not have to see them so much. After being lost in the multiverse for so long, it was refreshing to only see them in paint and fairy lights.
"So, what do you think?" Hazel said, flopping down on one of the deck chairs and making eye contact with her mother.
"It's pretty nice up here, actually. I'm pretty surprised if I'm going to be honest. I thought this was going to be some kind of gray industrial town, but this is basically the opposite. There's flowers springing up everywhere, a nice bonfire that never seems to die, all of the houses are different colors, and it's just so cute!"
"I know, right? I thought the exact same thing when I first saw this place."
"What is it called again?"
"Rephana's Haven. In case you haven't heard, she passed away a couple months ago..."
Hazel's mother gasped in shock. She hadn't known Rephana too well, but from what she had heard from the countless phone calls, she was a wonderful person and a wonderful part of the village.
"I'm so sorry to hear that, how are you guys all holding up?" Akina said, trying not to come off as insensitive.
"It's been really hard without her, but we've been doing our best. That's what matters, right?"
"From my own experience, yes, that is what matters most. If you don't do anything, you won't get anywhere."
Hazel pondered on the conversation she just had and looked at the time. It was seven in the evening, the time that she had something planned for. Panicking, she ran towards the bonfire area, being greeted by everyone in Rephana's Haven like a saint.
"Sorry for being late, I was caught up in something," Hazel said, trying to catch her breath.
A tripod was set up some distance away with a camera set up on top, and once Hazel arrived, she herded everyone into a couple lines, obsessively checking to make sure they all fit in the camera's frame. It took her ten whole minutes until she decided that it was all going to plan, and she sprinted back to the group after pressing the shutter button.
The timer ticked down, and a few seconds before it hit zero, Anatoly turned around and opened a ring box, which held a simple black ununquadium crystal ring. Hazel had to put a hand over her mouth to stop her from crying tears of joy. As she did this, she heard the shutter go off, taking a photo of what would be one of the most memorable moments in Hazel's life.
"These past few months have been the best ones in my life. You've helped me through so many struggles and have never let me down. I know we haven't talked too much about anything like this, and I'm too young to propose to you, so the best I can do is give you this as a promise that I will always be here for you," Anatoly said, his voice wavering with nervousness and worry that he was sounding too cliche.
"I don't know what to say other than thank you, but I'm afraid that sounds too awkward," Hazel attempted to say through her tears, giggling out of anxiety.
"That's all I need to hear..."
