For I Have Sinned

A hacking cough cut through the stillness of the night. You quickly pressed a cold hand to your mouth to cover it up, but still, a crimson liquid dripped from your lips.

(Y/n): Damnit...

You cursed to yourself as you took uneven steps toward the bar. In the other unoccupied was a heavy crate. A few drinks and a guy a little too prideful for his own good goes a long way in finding some new armor. Sure he might want it back, but you're just borrowing it for... forever. The hand pressed to your lips moved as you clutched your side. It appears that the injury you received seems to be more serious than it had first appeared. As you approached the bar, you found Diane looking at the stars. Of course, her massive size would force her to be outside the bar, but it seemed terrible for her to weather the elements like this. Another cough racked through your body drawing the giant girl's attention.

Diane: (Y/n)... Are you ok?

The slight excitement in her voice faded as you smiled at her with a tired smile, your hand clinging to your side.

(Y/n): I'm ok Diane. Can you lift me up, please?

The girl complied, gently gripping your form, ensuring her hand didn't grip down on your injured side. She set you on the roof of the bar next to her. The box fell from your grip and collided with a light metallic thud on the roof. You sighed lightly and sat next to the box, resting your arm on it.

Diane: What's in the crate?

(Y/n): The blacksmith couldn't fix the damage to my armor, so I st- I mean obtained a new one. I don't want to wear any armor at the moment though...

You both sat in silence for a bit. Not knowing what to say. This was the first true moment since Diane's arrival that the two of you had sat down for a time.

(Y/n): Do you...

Diane: Hmm?

Diane turned her head slightly to look at you.

(Y/n): Do you want to have that conversation now?

You grit your teeth lightly as you lent back onto the roof letting your hands rest behind your head as you gazed at the stars above.

Diane: What do you want to talk about?

(Y/n): I thought you had something to talk about when you asked me.

You chuckled lightly. You heard the girl giggle lightly herself but end it with a sigh.

Diane: It's been so long. You're all grown up...

(Y/n): It wasn't easy. I tried... so hard to clear your names, but I failed every time. I was just the traumatized little kid until moments like training or official meetings and then suddenly I was the grown man, the head of my family. I asked why this was and they never gave me an answer.

Diane: We should have brought you along with us. I can't believe we left you behind in that tower.

(Y/n): Don't beat yourself up over it. The past is in the past and we can't change it. No matter how much we want to...

You grew silent as you waited for Diane to say something.

Diane: What happened after we left?

(Y/n): Well...

You didn't really know where to start. You could talk about your training with the Roars of Dawn or the long list of enemies and friends you made. You didn't think telling her of past lovers would be a good idea in the slightest. With a deep breath and a strained exhale, you began to tell Diane of your upbringing. Leaving out more disturbing or gruesome details to spare ruining whatever image of you the girl held after so long. Other details concerning your fledgling love life and injuries you "accidentally" forgot to relay to the girl as well.

(Y/n): I hope that answers your question.

Diane: It does...

You noticed her pause and strained to sit up, but found your body flopping back onto the roof.

(Y/n): What's wrong?

Diane: I don't know. This feels strange...

(Y/n): Seeing you and Meliodas it has finally brought meaning to my life. It might be strange but I'm glad it is. Because it means I got to see you both again.

Sadly for Diane, that answer only seemed to make her feelings about the current situation between this newly born group of misfits.

Diane: I can't help but feel you're lying.

(Y/n): Hmm?

Diane: What's the real meaning in your life?

You opened your mouth to respond, but you couldn't find the words to respond with. Strangely, you found yourself even chuckling slightly, much to the dismay of your side.

(Y/n): You're better off with the first answer. You wouldn't like the real on-

Diane: You know me better than that (Y/n), tell me.

(Y/n): Well... I guess I wanna find the bastard who killed my Father and...

Diane: And?

(Y/n): I don't really know about afterward. Do I kill him then? Do I make him suffer? Because once I do, I don't know what to do. My whole life is leading to this point where I will spill blood once again and then what?

Diane chuckled lightly. It felt a bit morbid considering what you had just said.

Diane: You were right. I do prefer the first answer.

(Y/n): I did warn you.

Diane: You did.

You both sat in silence again. Not really knowing what to say to fill the void anymore. Was the conversation over? Did your words corrupt Diane's image of you? Probably, but the silence unnerved you more than that at the moment. You took a sharp breath as your side seemed to throb.

Diane: I want you to be more open with me.

(Y/n): I am-

Diane: You're in pain because of me and yet you are allowing yourself to suffer just to protect me.

(Y/n): No I'm fine.

You heard Diane audibly sigh.

Diane: I can put you back on the ground to allow you back inside.

You thought of going inside... but the throbbing pain made you reconsider. The conversation shouldn't end like this either.

(Y/n): No. I think I'll stay out here. With you.

Diane: You don't have to say anything to me you know. You can get some rest and I'll be fine.

(Y/n): I just happen to want to stargaze is all. Though I would like the company.

Out of your sight, Diane sighed but shook her head with a smile.

Diane: Then let's watch the stars together.

You smiled yourself and let the silence fill the air as you both settled in to watch the heavens above.
