VII

Dan was heading down to the lounge slightly early, determined to be there when Phil arrived, only to discover that Phil was already there and waiting for him. He stopped awkwardly in the doorway, unsure what to do. Phil turned.

"Dan! Morning!" Phil said brightly. Dan smiled back and walked in.

"You're early," he commented.

"So are you," Phil said. Dan checked his watch. It was half past ten.

Phil laughed at Dan's face. "Shall we go?"

Dan nodded and they left past the reception desk, smiling at the receptionist as they passed.

They walked along the street in companionable silence for a while, until Dan spoke.

"Where are we going?"

"I thought we could go to Rialto," Phil said (A/N that's an actual cafe in Leicester - you should go there).

"How far is it?"

"Not particularly. A few blocks away, maybe," Phil told him. The silence descended again until they reached a small cafe, tucked in between the other shops like they were protecting it. Dan liked the look of it.

Phil led him inside to the empty counter, and greeted the waitress.

"Do you know each other?" Dan asked.

"This is one of my regular haunts at vidcon," Phil explained. "People remember me."

They ordered coffees and sat down at a window table. Dan noticed Phil's hand resting on the table in front of him and wanted to reach out and take it, but he didn't. They barely knew each other, after all, he reasoned with himself, but all the same, it took a considerable amount of physical effort to keep his hands under the table.

"-so have you?" Phil finished. Dan realised that while he'd been battling with himself, Phil had been talking. He went red.

"Sorry, what?"

Phil sighed, in an amused sort of way. "I said, I didn't think I'd seen you at vidcon before. Is this your first time?"

Dan nodded. "I've never liked anything like this - conventions, parties and the like."

"What don't you like about them?" Phil asked.

"I guess it's just the way that you're forced to meet new people constantly. I've got a pretty small group of friends, and that's how I like it."

Phil nodded sympathetically, and then his face brightened. "Well, are you enjoying it now you're here?"

Dan nodded. "It's better than I expected."

Their coffees arrived and they spent a few more minutes drinking them, occasionally talking about ordinary things, like their lives, and what they thought of California.

Dan finished his coffee and they both stood up. "Shall we go?" Phil asked.

"Ok."

They made their way out of the coffee shop and out onto the busy street. "Where do you want to go now?" Phil asked.

"I guess you want me to suggest some famous landmark or whatever, but if I'm being honest I'd most like to go back to the hotel and onto the roof again," Dan told him.

"Sounds good to me," Phil said. "I usually spend hours showing people around cities when I come here, and it's exhausting. So. Roof garden?"

"Roof garden."
