CHAPTER ONE
THERE IS NO ART WITHOUT EROS

Footsteps echoed through the halls as Victoria Evangeline Crawford hurried towards the dining room. She weaved through the corridors, taking sharp turns at every right corner, her heart pounding with the realization that she was already late for dinner with her family.

The 1814 social season had begun only a few days ago, with all debutantes being presented in front of the queen on the first day. It had been a few years since she had debuted, but Victoria still remembered it as if it was yesterday, and she couldn't help but wonder who had been crowned the diamond of the season this time.

Nevertheless, the infamous Lady Whistledown hadn't written anything about it, and whispers began to circulate around the household staff that the queen had yet to declare her diamond due to "not finding a single lady that does meet her peculiar demands." And truth be told, Victoria loved herself some scandal.

"May I know why you are late? Again?"

Lillian asked as her only daughter rushed through the door, sitting down on her assigned seat.

"I apologize, mama. I guess I lost track of time in the attic," she said as she tried to regain her breath. "You know how much I enjoy being there."

"I am aware of that, and it would not bother me if it were any other day. However, it is Lady Danbury's ball tonight, the first ball of the season, and you ought to be dressed, Victoria."

"Yes, your mother is right," Walter nodded, agreeing with his wife. "It is your return to society and you need to make a good impression if you want this season to play in your favor."

"No amount of dressing up could lead to her making a good impression."

"Arthur Ernest Crawford!" Lillian scolded him.

"It was simply a joke, mother!" He laughed, taking a sip of his drink. "I am sure Tori will have all the gentlemen at her feet after only one glance in their direction."

"Oh, be still," Victoria said as she rolled her eyes playfully, focusing on the dinner plate in front of her.

The parents looked around at her sons, each engrossed in their own activities busy: Noah was absentmindedly playing with his food, focused on something on his lap; Arthur was talking with Victoria, or rather teasing her, and Elliot was devouring his meal.

"Boys," Walter said, looking at each of the men sitting on the table. "I think it is safe to say I want you all to be in your best behavior tonight."

Lillian agreed. "Indeed. Only because you do not want to get married, for whatever idiotic reason it may be, does not mean you get to ruin your sister's opportunities."

Both parents glared at their sons slightly, especially at their eldest, who quickly hid a flask under the table when he felt his parents' eyes on him.

"I do not know what you are talking about, father," Noah countered. "I will be on my best behavior."

"Me too!" Elliot said with a smile. "You do not need to worry about me."

"That better be true. Now, let us finish eating before we have to leave."

They sat around the dining table in contented silence, the only sounds being the gentle clinking of silverware and the occasional soft laughter. The warm glow of the candlelight illuminated their faces, casting a sense of peace and happiness over the room.

Once dinner was done, Lillian led her daughter up the stairs and towards her room, where the maids were already waiting. Going to stand in front of the large mirror, an elated — and at the same time anxious — Victoria let herself be dressed.

The dress for that night was beautiful, made of a soft, blush pink silk fabric that draped elegantly over her figure. The high waistline, featuring delicate pleats just below the bust, flattered her silhouette, and its short puffed sleeves with lace trim at the cuffs gave it a romantic look. The neckline was a modest high, with a subtle V-shape that framed her collarbones beautifully, and as she twirled around, her skirt swayed gracefully. For accessories, her mother had decided on a matching pink silk sash tied around the waist in a bow, which in her opinion added a touch of charm and sophistication. And of course, her white silk gloves were not to be missed.

Looking at her reflection in the mirror, Victoria ran her hands down her dress, smoothing the skirt a little bit. Returning to society after her travels through Europe stirred a mix of emotions inside of her. While she relished her freedom and the ability to travel as she pleased, a desire for a family also tugged at her heart, leading her to the decision that it was time to start building one of her own.

Now, she could only hope things would work out in her favor.

Stepping out of the carriage at Lady Danbury's conservatory ball, the Crawfords were greeted by a dazzling display of twinkling lights and vibrant colors. The grand estate loomed before them, its imposing facade illuminated by flickering torches that cast a warm glow over the scene. As they made their way towards the entrance, the sound of music and laughter filled the air, creating an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation that just happened to mirror Victoria's inner thoughts.

As they passed the grand entrance hall, lined with marble columns and ornate decorations, and then reached the conservatory, the family were met with a breathtaking sight, one that was not foreign to them, but that the younger siblings had not seen in a while.

"Lady Danbury certainly knows how to throw a ball," Arthur whistled as he looked around and greeted the ladies with a smile.

Victoria could only nod as she observed the building, most specifically the lush greenery, the colorful blooms, and the sparkling lights it was filled with and which created a magical ambiance that almost seemed to transport her to another world.

Only almost though, for with her parents by her side, it was nearly impossible not to be reminded of the importance of tonight.

"Remember, dear, this is your return to society after being away for the last two seasons," Lillian whispered to her daughter as she smiled at the other guests. "Finding a perfect match depends on making a good impression tonight."

"I know, mama. And do not worry, I will make the best of impressions."

Walter smiled at his daughter's confidence. "Oh, we know you will. Now, come on, let us make our rounds."

Once those words were uttered, the Marquess of Essex led his family through the crowded ballroom. It had been quite some time since the whole family had been present at an event like this, and their collective presence did not go unnoticed by the other guests, who greeted them with respectful smiles and nods.

A few even stopped them to engage in some small conversation, acknowledging the Marquess' esteemed position and inquiring about the family's well-being. Some even asked about the younger siblings' travels around Europe, and the Crawfords graciously reciprocated the pleasantries.

"Children," Lillian warned them, looking into the distance where none other than Queen Charlotte was standing with her ladies in waiting.

Walter immediately led the way there, his wife and children behind him. "Your Majesty."

"You better be on your best behavior," Lillian whispered at her sons while she smiled at the Queen.

"It is an honor to be in your presence once again," Walter bowed in her direction, his sons doing the same while the women of the family curtsied.

Queen Charlotte regarded the family with a warm smile, her eyes twinkling with recognition. "Lord and Lady Essex. It is always a pleasure to see you at court. How are you and your family?"

"We are well, Your Majesty," Lillian smiled. "Thank you for your kind inquiries."

It was then that Queen Charlotte, looking around to greet the younger Crawfords with a nod, noticed Victoria.

"Oh, I see you have decided to join us again, Lady Victoria. I trust your time abroad has been enlightening?"

"It most certainly was, Your Majesty," Victoria smiled kindly. "My travels have indeed broadened my horizons, but I am glad to be back in London. It was hard not to miss it while away."

"Does your return mean you are looking to find a partner this season?"

She nodded. "It does indeed. I think it is time I started thinking about my future."

The Queen nodded approvingly. "I am pleased to hear that, Lady Victoria. Society has eagerly awaited your return," she then turned to the Marquess and Marchioness. "You must be proud of your daughter's accomplishments."

"We are indeed, Your Majesty," Lillian replied with a smile.

And Walter smiled too. "Lady Victoria has grown into a remarkable young woman."

Queen Charlotte's gaze lingered on Victoria for a moment longer before addressing the family as a whole. "Continue to nurture her talents and guide her well, for she is destined for great things in our society."

With a final nod of approval, the Queen moved on to greet other guests, leaving the Marquess and the Marchioness of Essex with a smile on their faces. Having Queen Charlotte's approval was a great honor and a sign of respect that they had earned through their years of loyal service to the crown.

"Very well done Victoria," Walter smiled at his daughter. "We are proud of you."

"Yes, you impressed Your Majesty!" Elliot exclaimed excitedly, happy for his sister.

"Thank you," she smiled. "But we are just at the beginning of the season, so let's not get carried away just yet."

"Well begun is half done," Arthur smiled teasingly, nudging his sister's side with his elbow.

The eldest Crawford, however, simply sighed and walked away, rolling his eyes as he headed to the aperitifs table, not wanting to be part of the conversation anymore.

And thus the evening progressed, with the Crawfords seamlessly blending into the lively atmosphere of Lady Danbury's ball. Each member of the family found their own niche amidst the swirling crowd, engaging in conversation in their own distinct styles until it was time to go home.

Given the excitement of the night, it was only a matter of time before Lady Whistledown unveiled her latest pamphlet. And lo and behold, the morning after the ball, there it was, ready to be perused by all.

Dearest gentle reader,

there is nothing quite like the sweet-scented smell of success. But after taking in the scene from last night's festivities, it is clear the season won't be quite so fragrant for everyone.

After a tumultuous season last year, it comes as no surprise that Lady Barnes has chosen to step away from society. And yes, you read correctly. Miss Barnes now holds the Baroness title, for Lord and Lady Barnes tragically passed away during the off-season. While we all relish in gossip, let us take a moment to offer our heartfelt condolences to Lady Barnes and her brother.

But as they say, when one door closes, another opens. The daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness of Essex, Lady Victoria, has returned from her European adventures to grace us with her presence once more. Could this signal her readiness to settle down? Only time will tell.

And whilst the Viscount Bridgerton's own mama may have loudly declared her eldest son's lofty intentions to marry, I cannot be the only one wondering if this former Capital-R-Rake is, indeed, ready to flourish. Perhaps the viscount, like the rest of us, is simply waiting for the queen to finally name her diamond. Or perhaps this author should take matters into her own hands.

Though, of the many purportedly well-trained and bred hothouse flowers on display this year, this author must wonder if a more suprising choice might still be store. Whichever darling miss receives such high esteem, let us hope there is a suitor avilable of only th sharpest wit, lest his dry musings leave a young lady wilting like a parched rose.

"This fabric is absolutely lovely, Madame Delacroix," Victoria exclaimed softly as her fingers traced the light purple fabric she had brought.

The sunlit drawing room of the Crawford's home radiated with a familiar sense of familial warmth and togetherness, a feeling that enveloped the space on this day just as it always did. Only now, it was also filled with bolts of fabric, adding a touch of creativity and industry to the cozy atmosphere.

Madame Delacroix was a renowned modiste in the ton, and she had finally returned to town, prompting Lillian to invite her to their estate to select fabrics for her daughter's dresses for the upcoming season.

"Again, thank you for joining us, Madame Delacroix," Lillian thanked her. "I understand you just came back to town."

"Oh, no worries, Lady Essex," she smiled. "I am passionate about my work, and I was already in the area as I just visited the Bridgerton estate."

"I see Violet is just as eager as me to dress her daughters," the two chuckled in unison before Madame Delacroix turned to face Victoria again, showing her one of the fabrics.

"For an evening gown, I propose this ethereal silk chiffon in a soft shade of light blue. It will drape beautifully and create a truly enchanting silhouette."

Victoria's eyes sparkled with delight as she ran her fingers over the fabric. "It is stunning, Madame Delacroix. I can already imagine twirling around the ballroom in such a gown."

Next, Madame Delacroix presented a deep purple velvet adorned with intricate beading. "And for a more formal occasion, perhaps this luxurious velvet in regal purple would be fitting. The richness of the fabric will make a statement wherever you go."

Lillian nodded in approval, touching the fabric. "Indeed, that velvet is quite striking. It will be perfect for the upcoming soirées this season."

As they continued to discuss design details and envision the finished gowns, Victoria felt grateful for her mother's guidance and Madame Delacroix's expertise in bringing their visions to life.

"These are the ones," Lillian smiled as she pointed to the fabrics that had caught her and her daughter's eyes.

"Magnifique," the modiste exclaimed happily as she gathered all her fabrics, the household staff helping her. "I shall have these done by the end of the week for the Queen's soiree, but you will need to come to my shop before that to do a few fittings."

"Of course."

As Lillian and Madame Delacroix exchanged some more pleasantries, Elliot walked in the room. Holding something in his hands, he greeted the visitor with a nod while he walked over to his sister.

"New Lady Whistledown," he sang-song in a whisper as he handed her the paper in his hands.

Victoria's eyes lit up slightly and she immediately snatched the pamphlet from his hands. Her younger brother just laughed and sat down next to her on the sofa, the both reading the latest news.

Similar to Lady Whistledown, Victoria was filled with anticipation for the Queen's ball and couldn't wait to discover who would be named the diamond of the season.

And finally, the day had come.

Wearing one of her newest dresses, a luxurious silk gown in an elegant ivory, adorned with delicate lace and a flowing skirt, Victoria followed her family as they stepped out of their carriage and inside Queen Charlotte's St. James's Palace.

It was a lively scene already, with ladies and gentlemen dancing along to the music, and in the right side of the room was Your Majesty, observing everyone intensely as she looked for her diamond.

Upon entering, the Crawfords immediately headed toward her, bowing and curtsying once they were in her presence.

"Your Majesty."

"Ah, Lord and Lady Essex. It is delightful to see you again. And Lady Victoria, you look stunning."

"Thank you so much, Your Majesty."

"You came back at the perfect time, dear," Queen Charlotte smiled, looking at her. "Who knows, perhaps your return to society will bring some good fortune along with it."

Victoria beamed at her words, and the family bowed and curtsied again before walking away.

"Did you hear that? The Queen is definitely impressed by you, love," Lillian exclaimed excitedly, holding her daughter's arm in a sweet manner.

"That is definitely good news," Walter smiled at Victoria. "You've impressed her, just like you impress us every day."

"Yes, yes, we are all thrilled for little Vicky," Arthur chimed in, interrupting their conversation as he extended his arm out for his sister to take. "But now I would like to take my sister out to the dance floor."

Their father chuckled. "Be our guest, Arthur."

As her brother led her away, she caught a glimpse of Walter and Noah starting what seemed like an argument, and she frowned slightly. However, her frown quickly faded away as Arthur spun her around, making her chuckle.

She always liked dancing, finding it extremely fun. Therefore, she spent most of the time dancing, either with her brothers or with some of the gentlemen. And when she wasn't on the dance floor, she engaged in pleasant conversations with the other guests. At least until the Queen's men played some fanfare and the crowd went quiet.

"Your presence is noted, and your queen most appreciative. Allow it to now be my honor to present to you the season's diamond," she smiled, looking around at her audience, which had grown anxious and nervous as they awaited the revelation. "... Miss Aiya Chen Dalton!"

The crowd filled up with gasps and whispers as they clapped for the young woman. Victoria smiled as she joined in the applause, looking over at the girl. She hadn't had the pleasure to really meet the girl, but she was beautiful, and kind from what she could tell. A great diamond.

Her parents led her and her brothers to the aperitifs table, where they tried to console Victoria for not gaining the important title. However, she brushed them off and reassured them it was alright. Truth be told, she wasn't sure if she would have been able to deal with all the attention being the Queen's diamond entailed.

Taking a sip of her champagne, she looked around, observing the guests. Anthony Bridgerton had made his way toward Aiya and her family as soon as she had been named the diamond. It didn't surprise her in the slightest. After all, Lady Whistledown had mentioned the Viscount was looking for a wife.

However, the sight of him made her look around once more, now looking for a specific person, and lo and behold, it didn't take long to find her. Emmaline Davison, one of her childhood friends. She was standing next to Eloise, the latter holding her arm as they stared at Aiya and Anthony. Victoria had always thought Emmaline had a tiny thing for the eldest Bridgerton, and based on the look on her face, she knew things hadn't changed.

She needed to catch up with her soon.

In fact, she would have approached her in that very same moment if it hadn't been for Lord Fife, who started a conversation with her. He asked her about her travels, and she happily told him about everything she had seen while away. The two had a nice conversation until Arthur interrupted, giving Lord Fife a small glare.

"What was that about?" she asked teasingly.

"Nothing. I just wanted your attention."

She chuckled. "Right. You know you don't need to... protect me, or anything like that. I am older than you, remember?"

"Yes, you never let me forget," he chuckled too. "But... I will keep that in mind, sister. Despite me not wanting you to get married and leave."

"Aw, are you going to miss me, Artie?"

"Shut up."

The two shared a look and bursted out laughing, Arthur leading Victoria to the dance floor for another dance. Out of all her brothers, she always felt like her and Arthur had a deeper bond, probably due to being very close in age. He was her best friend, and she was his.

However, they did get tired of one another at points, and that was the case after their dance together. Arthur left to catch up with some of his friends from Oxford, and Victoria went back to the aperitifs table, now looking for something to eat.

"Well, I'll be damned."

A familiar voice took her out of her search, and she turned her head to see who it was, smiling once she saw him. "Mr. Bridgerton. It is nice to see you."

Benedict Bridgerton turned towards her, a small smile on his face. "Ah, Lady Victoria. It is nice to see you as well. I see you have returned from your travels across Europe."

"Yes, I have indeed," she smiled. "My brothers and I had a wonderful experience, but we felt it was time to come back."

"I see. Can't say I would do the same though," he let out a small chuckle and Victoria did too, now having found some cheese to eat. "Say..."

"Hmm?"

"Is that not one of your brothers?"

She followed his gaze and her eyes widened slightly when he saw her brother Elliot dancing with Eloise Bridgerton.

"Yes, that is Elliot. And I am certain that is your sister he is dancing with."

"Indeed," Benedict chuckled to himself. "I must admit, I am quite surprised."

"The feeling is mutual. But I have to admit, they would make a lovely couple."

"You think so?" he looked back over at Victoria. "I won't say I disagree, but I will say the idea of my sister settling for anyone is... wild... to say the least."

Victoria let out a soft chuckle. "I cannot say I disagree, because the same goes for my brother. It'd be quite funny to see the youngest Crawford get married first, but it would be extremely nice to have him off my back."

He chuckled alongside her before a lightbulb goes off in his head. "Say, I think I might have an excellent idea."

She raised an eyebrow. "You have?"

Benedict hummed, nodding. "Perhaps we can make sure they see eye to eye, and maybe fall for each other in the process."

At his words, Victoria couldn't help her smirk. "Hmm, matchmaking. I have to say, Benedict, I never took you for someone to do such a thing."

"Well, considering today's victories, I supposed I must keep the momentum going."

She chuckled. "Well, I am in. Who doesn't love a good matchmaking?"

He smiled. "Truly. Although I am not the best at it. My sister Daphne was much better at it for sure."

"Oh, that is right," her eyes lit up at the mention of her friend. She wondered how she was doing now that she was married. "How is married life treating her?"

"I believe it suits her well. I now have a nephew. August... we call him Augie though. He is quite adorable."

"Keeping up with the Bridgerton tradition, I see", she smiled. "And I can imagine, babies are adorable."

He chuckled. "It seems you know us quite well. I find that rather intriguing."

She smiled. "I'm just... quite observant."

Benedict couldn't quite place it, but there was something different about Victoria... something that made him want to learn more about her.

"Well, Lady Victoria," he held his hand out to her. "Would you like to dance with me? Perhaps close enough to our siblings so we can 'observe' them together..."

Victoria couldn't help but chuckle softly as she took his hand. "It would be an honor, Mr. Bridgerton. Let's be observant together."

He held her hand gently as he brought her to the dance floor, specifically close to their siblings.

Let the matchmaking begin.
