Chapter Thirteen

Once Jack had read the test results, he sent me straight back to my room. From the way they were reacting, I could only assume that the results were not what they expected. Also helped that Jack had said himself he didn't believe they were right.

So, for the past few hours, I have been sitting in my room waiting for something or someone. Now that I had my bag back, I decided to do some sketching with the pencil and paper I had got back in the camp. It was challenging due to how dull the pencil was, but I managed to sketch a rough outline of the castle from memory. After a few more random sketches of the woods and my room, I had no paper left to use.

So I started to walk around my room. What had I done in my room to entertain myself? I suppose reading passed most of the time, but I didn't have any books here.

Instead, I settle for the second best thing I could do which was to nosey around. I started by looking through the wardrobe again but found nothing new or interesting, so I moved to the bathroom. I had been in a bit of a rush the last time I was here, and I hadn't even noticed a cupboard sitting in the back of the room. I was going to check it out when I saw something reflective on the shower.

As I made my way to the shower, I noticed that the outside was shiny and had a small spec of silver that, when I examined it closer, turned out to be the reflection of the tap. I stood in front of the glass panel and saw a distorted image of a woman with a round face and a button-like nose. Above her bright yellow eyes sat a set of eyebrows that reflected my quizzical look. I was somewhat distorted, but I knew I was staring at myself. It was hard to accept since this was the first time I had seen my reflection.

I started to really stare at myself in the reflection, and my eyes drew me so much that I couldn't really see anything else. They were so different. I was starting to imagine them being a lot more of a natural colour when suddenly my eyes went brown, but I blinked, and they went back to their original colour.

I wasn't sure if I had done that or if the blood loss was affecting me more than I initially thought. Either way, my eyes were definitely interesting. I had one last look before I made my way back to the bed, forgetting about everything else in the room, including the balding Grey man who was currently standing by my door.

"Miss, we need to take you downstairs. Please leave all your belongings. You will come back." I did a quick check of the room and then followed the man out. He started leading me towards the room I had been in earlier, but rather than entering it, he reared off and took the door at the end of the hallway instead.

Inside the room, I was met with loads of people dressed in white jackets sitting at rows of desks filled with computers and other random lab equipment. Only a few lifted their heads as I was led down the middle and directed to a small room in the back. In the small room, there was a round table surrounded by many chairs with a whiteboard placed on the back wall, which all the chairs were facing. The balding man directed me to a chair at the back, furthest from the door.

I hadn't been sitting long when a few white-coated people came into the room and took up residence in the other chairs. One of them moved their chair in front of the board and started to address the room.

"I want to start by saying that everything said in this room is confidential and cannot be discussed anywhere other than in this room. So, on today's agenda, we will first discuss the results we received on test subject one and what they mean. Has anyone had any ideas?"

The speaker picked up a pen, removed the cap, and moved to the right of the board. There were a few raised hands, and the speaker went through them one by one.

"A parasite that can clone DNA?"

"A new species?"

"A royal?"

They either didn't know I was in the room or didn't care that I was. I kind of blanked out a bit and just heard odd snippets. Nothing piqued my interest as they were so random and different that I'd rather just know the real answer. From what it sounded like, they had never seen blood or DNA like mine before. One word I heard get said a lot of times was the word royal.

Apparently, they had never tested royal blood before, so they had no idea what it looked like, this meant they thought it was the only possible reason it was so obscure. I was fiddling with my hands when the room went silent, and I could feel all their eyes on me. They had obviously concluded their conversation.

"Daisy, right?" Said the lady to my right. I nodded, and she carried on talking.

"Do you know who or where you come from?" I shook my head, and she looked back at the speaker.

"It's the only thing that makes sense. She must come from our planet; I don't just mean one parent. She was born here to two royals. It's the only thing that makes sense. But I don't understand the yellow eyes and the odd behaviour of the blood. I am quite sure she has had many modifications done to her. It's the only explanation for the few odd features."

The speaker and the rest of the room nodded their heads slightly. The whiteboard got wiped clean, and the speaker spoke again.

"If she is one of us, then I think we need to suggest to our Queen and King that she be allowed to roam freely." He looked at me and clarified. "Of course, with guards on her trail in case she blacks out again, or if the blackouts are a lie, she is safe from the populace. If she has no memories of who she really is, I suggest we see if she has some repressed or maybe ones she has hidden from her. After all, the powers there seem to work very differently from our magic here. They are a lot more specialised and can do more than just basic spells. They have very defined powers."

A man in the back stood up and cleared his voice. "I think we will need to bring him in. He is the only one with powers close enough to even understand what they have done to her."

There were a few shocked gasps from around the room, but the only person who spoke was the speaker. "You may be right, but we will be asking the Queen and King to keep him longer than they wanted to. I also think we need to try to understand her sooner rather than later. I have a feeling some people may try to take her back again."

I sat straighter at that. Was he right? Would they really care enough to come after me?

"Are you sure? They locked me up my whole life. They never seemed to care too much about me when they had me. After all, I'm still in their shackles."

That sparked something in the speaker, and he walked over to me pulling out a pen. He pressed a button, and a bright orange light omitted from it. The next thing I knew, the chains on my hands were cut in half and taken off me. He then proceeded to do the same with my ankles. I looked down at where the chains had been, and the area looked rather dark compared to the rest of my skin, probably due to years of no real cleaning.

Once done, he made his way back to the front. The lady who had asked my name earlier spoke up again. "Daisy, the fact they took that many precautions with you is all the more reason they will want you back." She looked at me, but this time it felt like she was studying me. "I have a feeling you may be more powerful than any of us may even know. Even you!"

"Okay, I am going to talk to the Queen and King. Hopefully, we can get as much information on her as possible before another attack on the castle." Everyone left, and I was sent back to my room to mule over everything. Even though they hadn't spoken to the Queen and King, I was still closely watched, but it felt like they were giving me a much bigger berth than they had before. I felt it wasn't because I might be one of them.

In my room, I was greeted by a lovely long, blue gown that was laced with flowers hanging on the front of the wardrobe door. I assumed it was something I needed to wear, so I undressed and got ready. Now I could kind of see my reflection. I tried my best to do myself up. After all, I was in a very fancy dress.

I gave myself one last glance before I sat on my bed, waiting to be greeted and taken to wherever I was supposed to go.

The door opened, and in came the Queen looking very elegant in a long black dress. I stood up to greet her, but she gestured for me to sit back down and sat beside me.

"I've been speaking to the scientist and doctors, and they have informed me that they believe you may be a royal, but they can't be a hundred per cent sure. It's not that I think you aren't, but I have given them access to my mother's remains. If your DNA matches, then we believe you are the child taken from my parents twenty-one years ago. If this is the case, then I would love to accept you back into my family as the royal you have always been. As for whether I can trust you, I was wondering if you would allow us to let someone try to unlock your memories to understand what was done to you." I blinked very slowly, taking it all in. I didn't say anything; I just gave a small nod.

We had been sat in silence for a good fifteen minutes before there was a knock on the door, and a piece of paper was given to her. She opened the envelope and started to take out the small piece of parchment. As she was reading, her smile became more prominent, and by the end, she hugged me.

"It's official you really are my lost sister. You are finally home, Daisy! Well, here you were called Rosabella, but as you only had that name for ten days, we can stick with Daisy. Unless you want to use your old name."

I didn't hug back now that I knew I was a lost royal. I suddenly felt outraged after all this time. Why had nobody come for me?

I don't think that's why I was angry; I think it was because why did I have to be a royal to be allowed to be loved. Why couldn't people want me because I am a person? I shouldn't need a title to be respected; I also shouldn't need a title to suffer years of neglect and probable abuse. I was a child; I didn't choose my family. I didn't deserve this! Nobody does, but I got it, and that can't be taken away from me.

I stood up very quickly. "I will allow someone to open my mind to unlock my memories, but we aren't family. You weren't there during my worst or best. We may share the same parents, but you weren't there. The only person who was there was me. I am my family and don't need anyone else. I've lived my whole life thinking I needed someone else. I was so lonely that anything would have been better than living alone in that room. You know what is worse, though, it's knowing I had a family that was so powerful they could have got me if they tried, but nobody ever came. I was neglected for what? My kidnapping didn't achieve anything. It was obviously a failed experiment. That's why they took a second shot at your child. I am not special. I am nothing; I was the wrong child who was experimented on in order for another planet to gain some kind of leverage that nobody even took. Either way, I should have been treated with some respect and decency for giving you your child back and letting you escape. I shouldn't have to be royal or from this planet to be treated like a human being instead of a lab rat. And my name is Daisy!"

I didn't even take a second look; I just walked straight out of the room and slammed the door behind me. I didn't know where I was going; I just walked.
