Chapter Nine

I must not have been asleep for very long when the tent started rustling. Before I got out, I ensured my glasses were on, and my face was unreadable. I needed to make sure they don't know that I heard them last night.

I didn't hear much, but it still worried me that they would find out I was eavesdropping.

One thing it did was help me to decide how much I wanted out of these cuffs. Didn't help that this morning's atmosphere was off. I don't want to be stuck with no way out when this all goes down.

After the tents were packed up and everyone was ready to go, we set off towards some kind of impending doom. At least from the look everyone had on their faces, you'd think that was the case.

As my team was leading the walk and the holders were keeping up the rear, I decided to make sure I was well behind the group so that they couldn't hear me struggle with my cuffs and not close enough to the holders that they could see me.

I spent a good half an hour pulling at the chains around my wrist. I knew it wouldn't work, but what else could I do. I will not lie; I am kind of afraid to take them off. I don't even know why I have them on. After all, I could be the dangerous thing they talked about; I probably have no control over the powers I have. If I am the thing they talked about, then I can be controlled. These cuffs could be tracking me for all I know and maybe even suppressing me in someway.

The more I thought about the vicious thing being me, the less I was sure it was. After all, I had never met any of these people before or even done anything in front of them to think I would be any kind of threat. Lucas specifically said, 'It's the most vicious thing I've ever seen.' I've never even used my powers, so how could it be me. These cuffs are just a way for them to control me, psychologically, and I will get them off.

A couple of hours later, of me pulling, picking, and yanking at my cuffs, I still wasn't out, and I was starting to feel like my big escape was getting further out of reach. But just as I was trying to look around for any kind of help to get my cuffs off, Carmen slowed down to walk alongside me.

"Daisy. As we are only a few hours out, I will now tell you the mission's aim and what your job is. As you may have guessed, we are walking towards the dwelling of a ruler on this planet. We have been told that it is a castle with many hidden entrances. Our mission is to place an object in the very middle turret. We are all assets to this mission, and we will all need to use all the strength we have. Once we are close enough to safely stop without being seen, one of your holders will remove your restraints, but that doesn't mean you need to use your powers. We have been told to tell you that under no circumstances are you to use your powers even if we are all too weak to use our own."

What does that mean?

What can I expect, though? They are very tight lipped.

"Oh yeah, and I have been told the same goes for your glasses; they stay on. One of us will tell you when it's time for your cuffs to come off." And with that, he was off back to the front.

So they are still not telling me what I'm actually doing. Why would you hide this so much if it wasn't something sinister?

But I am losing my cuffs. That is definitely something good and a fantastic start on a way of getting away and never going back into that dank room I called home again.

Even though I knew the cuffs were coming off I still pulled at them for the next two hours. Which is when we had finally arrived at a small clearing that gave us a spectacular view of a huge castle. It was a very simple stone building that stood around 30ft from the ground. I could not see a way of making it up the walls without powers or a very long stable ladder. But I am sure there is an entrance for the residents somewhere.

It seemed like we were at the back because even though it was a breath-taking structure, it was still very empty with next to no windows, surprisingly nothing like the castles my books had described. But then again everything so far was nothing like my books so why am I surprised.

Once we had come to a halt, I turned to a holder, and they walked over to me with a black stick with a flat end. He waved it over my leg and arm cuffs. I expected to feel them release, but instead, I felt myself fall, and my vision went blank.

I kept trying to open my eyes, move, just feel my body again. It felt like forever, but slowly, my vision came back. It wasn't clear; instead, it was blurry, almost like I was looking through a dirty pair of glasses.

I watched as the holder put the black sticks back in his bag and walk off into the woods where it seems the other holders had gone.

Then I looked down at my hands but realised I hadn't wanted to. My body did it. I was now watching as my hands were turned over, and my body started to move stiffly.

I wasn't doing any of this.

I had no control over my body, my mind, my eyes. Was this some kind of bizarre dream?

Lucas stood in front of us all and cleared his voice. I saw in the corner of my unfocused eye how my team were shifting as far away as possible from me. "Okay, now that we are all set, let's discuss the action plan. I think to even get into the castle, we will need to go over, and I think Hope your ability might need to come into play here. Do you think you can fly us all up there, or maybe you could aim an arrow with some rope, and we can climb up one by one? Then it's a guessing game once we are in. I do know that we need to go to the centre turret. That is where we will drop off. I think we will just have to wing it once we get in."

Everyone went silent until Hope spoke up. "So we are going in blind? Do we not have anything that will help us when we get in other than her?" She turned around to look at me with a mixture of disgust and terror.

The four of them all grabbed the sheets they had been given before we left and were seemingly going over everything they had been told. Once they had apparently finished reading one by one, they attached their packs to their backs and started walking ahead. It seems Hope wanted to keep her powers stored up because she shot an arrow up to the castle. The first one fell straight back down, landing almost 10 inches away from Hopes feet. On the second shot, she managed to plant it up the top of the castle wall.

It was a thick piece of rope, but the arrow was extremely thin, so to be on the safe side Hope climbed up first and anchored it down, then gestured for the rest of us.

The others had agreed on leaving a 5-minute gap between them as they ascended the wall. As the holders had now left us I was last to reach the top, as it seems my body is rather stiff when I'm not in control. I also guessed they felt safer with me behind them.

At the top, we were met with another stone wall, which was only around 7ft tall. Compared to the big castle, this wall was tiny.

After Lucas was happy we were all here he started to float up and stare over the wall.

"Well, I think the guards may be a bit preoccupied with everything going on down there to bother coming up to check us." He then floated back down. Now that he had pointed out that something was going on in the castle, you could hear the slight sounds of shouting, but it sounded very distant.

I wonder how far away the commotion is.

The others must not have cared as they straightened themselves up and started walking to the right, which moved us away from the noise.

The further we got, the tenser everyone else became. They started to get a bit fidgety as they walked. I don't think anyone here has ever had to fight anyone for real. It made me wonder why give them such an important mission with barely any real training.

Maybe that's why they are doing this mission. They won't have to fight much, just a drop and run.

I think the others had been given some kind of specific instructions for the route because they seemed to find all the right passages. When we finally found our first opponent, they seemed to know they would be there too.

Carmen slowly crept behind him and knocked him out with one swift hand movement. There was no fighting, no commotion. The man didn't even make a sound when he hit the floor. He just lowered to the ground soundlessly.

There was obviously more around because Carmen told everyone to stay quiet and made them stay behind a wall hiding from view. He sped off, and a couple of minutes later, he was back with not so much as a scratch on him. I don't know how many people he crossed, but maybe I underestimated these people. Perhaps they are more well-trained than I thought. I think I am the only untrained person here. But that won't matter because I'm not in control.

Ever since I had regained consciousness, I have been trying to control myself again, but there is a powerful invisible barrier stopping any attempt at this.

Once Carmen was back behind the wall with everyone else, Hope explained our actions from this point onwards.

"Everyone clear on the plan? Daisy or whoever it is, I assume you know what you are doing. As for the rest of us, we have been told it's a very straight path out the back, and once we are out, we will send a signal to the people up front and we should all be gone within the hour." The way she spoke made it very clear that I was the so-called object being dropped off. This confirmation made me even more determined to get back in control. If I could just break these cuffs. "Ready to go?"

They all nodded, and off we went. I thought with all my might to just stand still, not move. This was my body.

I did make it falter, but it just had such a strong hold on me that it barley did anything.

It followed Hope into a round room with stairs leading to the next level. Once at the top, we were greeted by a room resembling a nursery. It was beautifully decorated, with many colourful butterflies fluttering around the drawn-out trees that spanned the whole room. The ceiling was painted in a vibrant blue. It felt like a room made with a lot of love.

Whoever slept here had parents who spent a lot of time making this room so homely.

Before I could take in the whole room, I was greeted by screams and cries of pleas. A young couple were standing at the end of the room in front of a large wooden cot. I couldn't see anything in the cot due to the protective stans they had over it.

The woman was pleading, but I couldn't hear her. It was so inaudible due to the cries of sorrow. It was horrible to hear. But I didn't try to work out what she was saying.

For some reason, their look stumped me and left me momentarily deaf. I stopped fighting my body just for a second to take in their appearance. They didn't have the damaged hair of the people I saw back in the compound. No, their hair was silky and clean. It looked healthy.

They looked healthy.

I don't think they have ever been exposed to anything bad. I couldn't see their eyes, but I could tell they held something more than emotion.

"Please don't take him!"

"Just leave him be. Take us, not him."

Hope made a sour face and just lifted her hands. The young couple were lifted and violently smacked against the wall in one swish movement. They tried to get up and move back towards the cot, but Hope was giving all she had. No matter what they did, they just couldn't move. I didn't like watching them in pain, but I didn't know what I could do.

They own me. It's bad enough taking my whole life away, but at the chance of freedom, they just take even more. Now they are trying to make me.

What?

I don't know a killer, a monster!

This is my body. Why should they get to take even more of me?

Carmen walked over to the cot and took the baby in his hands. It wasn't careful. It was a rough grab. So much so that the baby started crying. Sarah walked over and brought a knife to its little face.

That was it, the incentive I needed. I put all my thought on being back in control. I felt it hit me like a ton of bricks. I felt the control come back. It was mentally and physically exhausting pushing myself this much, but the idea of an innocent child being murdered I just couldn't.

I stumbled over to the cot where Carmen and Sarah were with the baby. I could see from their eyes they were a little taken aback. I grabbed the baby from Carmen's hands. He let go very quickly, not resisting at all. He looked at me with so much fear.

I gave the parents one quick pained look and then looked back at the want-to-be baby murderers.

Carmen turned to the others. "I thought she wasn't supposed to get involved? Kill the child and leave her here. That's what the instructions said." He then looked back at me and tried to take the baby back.

I could feel the control being taken away. It took the last bit of effort from me to look over at Hope and just utter one word.

"STOP!"

She took her eyes off the parents and looked at me; as she did, she let her control slip.

The parents got up, I passed them their child, and they ran out. Nobody stopped them. They were all stuck in place. Their fear of me seemed more powerful than the need to go after the family.

But it didn't matter because I could feel my hold loosening. My vision went black, and I was gone.
