Chapter Eleven
When I awoke, I found myself on a cold stone floor. I sat up and saw around 12 crossbows pointed straight at me.
"Hi." I don't know why I said it.
They didn't move their weapons even when the doors opened, and more guards scampered in.
Well, I guess it's a positive that I am still alive. I am kind of surprised they haven't already killed me.
Once the extra guards surrounded me, I was pushed to the ground with the butt of a cane, making me lie on the floor with my eyes focused on the ceiling. I don't know what I expected, but I was disappointed when all I saw was a plane grey ceiling with one singular crack forming on it.
I lay there staring at the crack, still having the crossbows trained on me, when the two parents from the nursery room looked down at me. I was surprised by the look on their faces. I expected to see some kind of angry emotion, but there was nothing there. They looked emotionless.
"Why didn't you kill him? Why did you give him back?"
My responses took longer to form on my tongue. I guess we were going straight into questioning. It was also odd hearing his voice so calm and clear after the events of yesterday.
I looked around, trying to gauge if I would be pushed back down again if I attempted to move. Once I felt safe enough; I made myself sit up; I could have stood, but I didn't want them to see it as a sign of aggression.
"I didn't want to kill him. I only just held enough strength to take him off them!" I was going to expand, but the lady spoke up.
"You looked very willing when you walked in. Why the change of heart?"
"Well, I wasn't really me when I first walked into that room. I doubt you would have seen with all the commotion, but I'm chained up." To this, I lifted my arms up, showing my cuffs off.
"These past few weeks have been the only time I've been let out of my room since I was born." I was starting to get angry, but I looked down at the blood on my hands and lowered my voice again.
"I honestly didn't want any part of this, but I had no choice. I don't know what they wanted to do with your baby, but I had no involvement in that. I didn't let them have him. After all, I gave him back to you!" You could tell they still didn't trust me, but what could I do? The only thing probably keeping me alive right now was the fact they didn't understand my motives.
"Say we believe you and you really were chained up. How in hell did you manage to take on all your allies upstairs by yourself if you struggled so much to give us our child. Why shouldn't we kill you too." I guess that confirms it. I did have something to do with their deaths.
"Do it! Honestly, I have nothing to live for. I don't want to go back to where I came from, and I have nobody to call a friend or family. Over the last few weeks, I may have been let out of my makeshift cage, but I'm still a prisoner. Maybe death is the only kind of freedom I'll ever have." I didn't know why I said what I did, but it was true. The minute those words came out of my mouth, I knew I had no will to live. I had no purpose.
So, I swivelled myself around and got to my knees, ready for whatever they would do to me. Then the father spoke.
"If you are so used to being locked up, then you won't mind it for a few more days while we decide what to do with you."
I again opened my mouth stupidly. I don't know why I said what I did. "Before I go, I just want to say something. While we were making our way here, my group talked about an object in their control that was very vicious. They seem to think it was important that it was put in that room." I knew I was the object, but I didn't elaborate. I had a feeling they already knew that.
A few guards pulled me up and started leading me out of the room when the woman spoke softly, but I couldn't hear her as they moved me away.
The guards and I then left the room, and I was directed down a long corridor ending in some winding stairs. It was another 15 minutes before we made our way into a dark single room with a bed, a sink and a very used toilet.
Made me miss my old prison. At least that one was comfortable and didn't smell like a sewage pipe had burst.
I went over to the bed and heard the bulky door shut behind me. I perched on the bed and tried to decide what to do. My bag had been placed on my bed, so I picked it up and placed it next to me while I searched it, looking for my water. I drank some and put it back away again. Even though I was starving earlier, I had lost my appetite and didn't fancy the food I had in my bag anymore. At least I knew I still had some food and clean clothing left.
I looked down at my hands, looking at the dried-up blood. Taking this as an excellent opportunity to remove the traces of my horrible act from my hands, I got up and walked to the sink, put in the manky plug, and turned it on. It took me a while to clean them without soap, but I got them clean enough to not see the blood anymore.
Now the blood was gone; it left me to question how I managed to do it without having any memory of it. Did I have powers I could access even with the chains on?
I had no idea where to even start on how I could see if this was possible. Don't people undergo years of training to learn what they are doing?
I can't remember much about my childhood. Maybe I was taught, and I just had my memory wiped. Or perhaps that's just my wishful thinking. As I had no real method I decided to try the first thing that came to mind.
Water.
So, I turned the tap back on and tried focusing really hard on the water while I waved my hands over it. Even if I did have this power, it wouldn't work. After all, I haven't even thought about what I want it to do. As I was alone, I thought about just saying what I wanted out loud.
"Rise." Nothing
"Move." Nothing
I tried a few more words. They were a mixture of random words shuffled in with a few swear words. I tried thinking back to the training grounds with Sarah. I don't think she said anything! She just did some hand movements. I tried to picture what she had done, but I couldn't do it, so instead, I just ended up flailing my hand around, but nothing worked. So, I gave up and returned to my bed, looking back at my hands again and sighed.
"Why are you all chained up, Daisy? Are you a danger as long as they are on?"
"You know talking to yourself is the first sign of madness?" Said an unfamiliar voice from the wall behind my bed.
"So is hearing out-of-body voices!" I knew it was another person, but what did I have to lose.
"Well, good job, you aren't because I very much have a body, or I wouldn't be able to tell you how uncomfortable these beds are. Either way, you were still talking to yourself." This person must have been here awhile without social interaction because why else would you talk to some random person in a cell. I could be dangerous, after all.
"Okay, voice in the wall, who are you, and why have you been locked up?" If he isn't going to be curious about my identity, I guess I'll have to be about his.
"Bit personal, don't you think." He sounded offended, but I wasn't sure if he was just pretending for a reaction.
"Okay, then we can just sit in silence."
"No, no, I'll tell you. I am Prince Jacob, soon to be the ruler of Clevana."
"Is that this kingdom? If so, how can you become a ruler? The King and Queen still look in their prime. Are you a long-lost older brother?"
"She doesn't have a long lost brother. But this kingdom isn't Clevana anyway. It's Blanca. Even so the youngest child of the current rulers of the kingdom inherits the kingdom. So, if I was her older brother it wouldn't make me ruler. But to be honest, the rulers of this kingdom are not of royal blood. She was adopted. She is not biologically related to her parents, so technically, the crown should move to the next eligible royal bloodline. But she's alright as a leader, and the royal bloodline is so small there are no spares anyway. I am not related to this royal bloodline, but I am of royal blood, and since each kingdom needs royal blood given to its lands to keep it replenished, I was asked to give mine in order to help them. But apparently, my parents didn't inform the Queen and King, so when I told them of my job, they were offended and put me in here till they could check my story out. Bit ridiculous if you ask me, but once my story is confirmed, I'm sure I'll be out straight away."
"That makes no sense. Why must you have royal blood to replenish the land?"
"Do you know nothing? To be fair, not many people know that much about royal blood. But even so you sound very clueless. You must give royal blood to your kingdom twice a year as it holds special properties. I'm not entirely sure what those properties are, but if you don't have that blood, then you can cause your kingdom to fail, and deaths can occur. It's very dangerous, but because we all are very private about our kingdoms, this kingdom's rulers were very worried about how I knew that the Queen wasn't royal."
"How can you tell she's not royal? Does she know?" He scoffed.
"Us royals can recognise each other, and she's not a royal. We also have a clever map that tracks all bloodlines, and she's not on it. Everyone knows that there are maps in every kingdom. But nobody really cares as they don't know about the blood giving to the land."
Each time he talks, I wonder why he is telling me so much, but this is the most information I have ever been given ever before, so I try not to question it too much.
"When you say you can recognise them, how does that work?"
"It's hard to explain. It's like a feeling you get around them that is more extreme when you touch them. When I didn't get it around her, I could have put it up to her not being very strong, but when I shook her hand, I felt nothing. I knew she wasn't of royal blood. But I needed to check in case the map was wrong. I've never seen her in person, so when we shook, I should have felt it, but I didn't."
I was going to ask more when the door banged open, and the guard came in with some food and told us to shut up.
Before we fell asleep, I heard him again. "Hey, what's your name?"
"It's Daisy."
