Life's been busy so I'm doing a little one-shot just for me.

Post-Seabound. Sometime after my one-shot Dive Down Deep Into Her Sound.

The sand was gritty between his toes, a feeling that was so uncomfortable yet so satisfying. It shifted beneath his soles, becoming hard as he reached the shore. The waves crashed like music, licking at his feet before retreating into the ocean.

Kai closed his eyes and breathed in the fresh sea air. It was salty and cold and smelled a little too much like rotten fish but it filled his memories with something sweet, something good. Kai couldn't help but want to breathe it in more.

"Kai?" He turned slightly to see Skylor standing on the porch. The wind whipped her red hair around, pulling it from its messy bun as she tugged her orange sweater tighter around her body. "It's early, what are you doing up?"

Her voice was cautious, gentle, laced in concern. Kai almost smiled at it, letting the warm feeling turn the corners of his lips up. "I wanted to watch the sunrise over the water."

"That's awfully poetic." Skylor teased, sliding on her flip-flops and making her way towards him. Her arms were wrapped around her body, her tense form showing how cold she was. She looked out over the ocean for a moment with him. Closing her eyes as she let the breeze ripple through the baby hairs on her forehead. Kai stared at her, an adoring look on his face as he watched her.

Skylor blinked and squinted at him when she saw him looking. "You should come inside, it's cold."

"In a minute," Kai promised half-heartedly, shifting his stance so he faced the horizon again. Skylor went to protest but his mind was elsewhere. She could see that faraway look he had in his eyes.

"This was her favourite time." He whispered. "When the sun looked like it was sailing on the waves, its reflection rippling in the water, and the sky like a painting. She used to say it was like the First Spinjitzu Master was using watercolours across the clouds."

Skylor's face saddened as she listened to him. His soft tone was heavy with grief. "I know." She murmured, taking off her sweater and wrapping it over his shoulders, despite her still being in her nightshirt and the goosebumps littering her shoulders. "You always say that." Her voice wasn't annoyed or exasperated, simply talking for the sake of grounding him.

She squeezed his shoulders, trying to bring his mind back into the present. When he finally glanced at her she gave him a serious look. "You should call them. The team's still together. They need you."

Kai shook his head. "You know I can't." Skylor pressed her lips together, something turning in her head but she didn't say anything else, she didn't press. She never did.

They stood there for a couple more seconds, shivering in the cold, savouring the moment until Skylor had to tear herself away. "I need to get to work, Kai."

He hummed absently, one side of the sweater falling from his shoulder. Skylor immediately pulled it back on, tucking the folds into his body so he was wrapped up snugly. It was a loose sweater on her, made to be something for her to wear casually around the house, but it was a little tight on him. He didn't seem to mind.

She patted him lightly over the heart, pressing a kiss to his cheek before stepping back. "Okay, don't stay out here too much longer. No going in the water until I get back, got it?" Skylor said seriously, taking the sides of his face so he understood.

"Love you," Kai murmured with a lazy smile.

"I love you too," Skylor whispered. She gave him one last peck between his eyebrows before she ran back into the cabin, sand flying behind her. Kai watched her go, his fingers thumbing the edges of the knit mindlessly as he stood there.

Kai stepped back to the ocean, dipping his feet in for just one more moment as he closed his eyes. "See you later, sis." His voice was so quiet it was barely a whisper.

Then he stepped back.

And followed Skylor back into the cabin.

I guess soft angst is my way of doing a relaxing one-shot. 😂 You learn something new about yourself everyday.
