Chapter 8
The birds were chirping a sweet song, like always, but this time it was as if they were anticipating something great. The weather made it look like as if it was spring despite it being autumn. Chattering of other people passing by filled the park, as if contributing to being background music for the birds.
Soleil was humming along while walking towards the desired place with a calm pace. The grass beneath her feet was gleaming due to the sun and also because of the sun itself, she could already feel the top of her head getting warmer bit by bit due to having dark hair.
She had planned to meet one of her best friends, Tiana, at Parc Borèly for a picnic. It had been a while since they had hung out, so they seized the opportunity to do so. They were in different faculties at University too, so they did not cross each other's paths much in there.
Soleil arrived beside the lake and as she was the one who brought the blanket for her and Tiana to lay on, she decided to spread it across the soft grass under a large tree. She placed the food she had brought with her in its respective place while humming along with the birds. She let out a sigh of relief as soon as she sat down under the shade; the heat was taking too much of a toll on her. By that time, she felt as if the top of her head was boiling.
While waiting for her best friend to come, Soleil tried to kill the time by looking attentively at the lake in front of her. With every movement, with every ripple and every soft sound, Soleil's mind was gathering memories bit by bit of the last dream. The lake reminded her of the chilly sea that she and her soulmate had run into. She relived his touch enveloping her hand and felt the same happiness in her heart that she felt when he lifted her up. It was at times like this when she missed him the most; when she meets parts of her dreams in waking life without him by her side.
Her lips then tugged into a shy smile as she suddenly remembered the kiss they shared. When were they going to do it in waking life? Everyone lived by the phrase "patience is key", but how much longer did they have to wait to finally be in each other's embrace? She knew, however, that at least she was not alone in this situation, and that instantly made her feel better. Along with that thought, another then suddenly came to mind. How about telling Tiana about this? She knew that she would be supported, as Tiana was always there for her through every thick and thin. But still, would she ever believe something like this?
As she was about to shake that thought off her mind, Soleil suddenly felt a pair of hands grabbing her shoulders. With a gasp, she turned around warily, only to find Tiana with a mischievous smile on her face. Soleil eased at the sight of her best friend and started giggling.
"Gosh, you scared me! I was ready to throw a few punches!" she exclaimed jokingly.
"Yeah, that's why I started to take some steps back," Tiana replied while laughing, "You could release your inner ninja in no time."
"Yeah, so you better watch out," replied Soleil while sticking her tongue out at Tiana.
"You looked as if you were deep into your thoughts..is everything alright?"
"Yeah yeah don't worry," she said calmly while feeling nervous internally, "I was only distracted by the lake as seconds went by." She hoped she did not sound as nervous as she was feeling because if Tiana continued to persist, Soleil would have to eventually tell her the truth. This is because she did not really know how to lie, but for the sake of not being taken as delusional, she decided to keep this ability to herself. Soleil had only told Lydia about it because the latter was the one who first opened up about it. She was thankful for Lydia doing so, because at least she could talk about it with someone who understood and know what it felt like.
Tiana only smiled sincerely and patted Soleil's shoulder in reassurance. The former sat down comfortably just next to Soleil and started putting the food she brought along with all the food that Soleil had already arranged on the blanket. As soon as she was done, Tiana turned to her best friend and happily expressed how happy she was that she finally had the opportunity to catch up with Soleil in person.
"It's so lively here! Our monotonous life is about to start again but at least this park consoles us. This is perfect."
"I know right? And seeing this lake in front of us makes me want to dip my feet right into it! It looks so refreshing."
"Ah, so that's why you were staring at it when I arrived," Tiana teased, "What's stopping you though? You can do so if you like."
"Are we even allowed to do so?"
"Who cares? You're still a young and wild lady who only has one life to live!"
Soleil scoffed but this only made her best friend even more persistent. Tiana grabbed Soleil's hand without any warnings and dragged her closer to the lake. She then pulled Soleil down to sit so the latter had no choice but dip her feet in the water, or else Tiana would continue to nag her about it.
It was the same chill so she got in her dream. It was chilly, but refreshing and while her feet were a little cold, her heart started to get warmer at the thought of her soulmate. Soleil, however, had to step out of her trance as Tiana brought her back to reality with her talking.
That was until her stomach started rumbling. Soleil started to giggle and took the initiative herself to get up and ask Tiana for them to go back to their picnic spot. If it were not for the tree's shade they were under in, their food would have become a hot mess by then since they left everything on the blanket.
As soon as they sat down, Soleil's phone started ringing. Unaware of who it could be, she grabbed it and noticed it was Lydia.
Hmm. Something would have happened for her to call; she usually sends text messages.
"Heyyy, what's up?"
"Sol! I have great news to share with you. You're not going to believe what has just happened!" she said excitedly from the other end of the line.
What could it be?
