Chapter 5
You stared wide eyed and the TV, swallowing the lump in your throat.
"H-Hiro!" You called. He poked his head out of the kitchen and walked over to where you were sitting, sipping a cup of hot tea.
"Yeah? What's-" Hiro stopped mid-sentence when he turned his gaze to the TV. "Oh..."
You watched the reporter, dumbfounded as she talked to the camera about the newly committed murder. She spoke into her microphone with an expression of worry and curiosity.
"A young sixteen-year-old girl was found dead this morning by police after she'd been reported missing."
"D-do you think it's him again? Our guy?"
"I-I don't know (Y/N). What do you think we should do?" You just shook your head and shut off the TV.
"Come on, the police are on it. They'll probably find him. Come on, I'm going to take a shower, and you should start getting ready or we'll be late for school." With that, you walked briskly up the stairs, and into the bathroom.
~~~
You scribbled furiously in your notebook, not looking up when you heard a chair squeak in front of you.
"Hey (Y/N)." You heard Fred say from above you. You set down your pencil and turned to face him.
"Hey Fred, what's up?"
"I just saw the news. He struck again then huh?" You sighed, and Fred flashed you an apologetic smile.
"We're not positive, but it fits the pattern so there's a good chance." He nodded.
"Oh! Hiro was looking for you... something about blueprints?" You jumped up, giving Fred a quick "thank you" before dashing off down the hall. You found Hiro walking back from the copy room.
"(Y/N)!" He called, holding out a stack of blueprints.
"Thanks Hiro!"
"It was nothing."
You walked to your next class, unable to get the murder case off you mind. You knew there was no proof they were connected... right? You bumped into someone, snapping you out of your thoughts. Looking up, you saw a guy about your age, smiling apologetically.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't watch where I was going!" You shook your head.
"No, it was my fault." The boy smiled, his green eyes twinkling with amusement.
"I'll see you around then." You waved over your shoulder, and returned to navigating through the busy halls, being sure to pay attention this time. Outside of your math class, you caught a glimpse of Hiro leaning on a locker. Looking closer, you saw none other than Clare talking and laughing as he spoke. Your grip tightened on your backpack strap, and you forced yourself through the door, getting to your seat just before the bell rang.
It was true, you'd begun to notice Clare hanging around Hiro more and more outside of tutoring. Not that you were jealous... or anything, but it was natural for you to be protective of your first boyfriend. You knew it was just friendly between them, and you trusted Hiro wholeheartedly -- but you couldn't say the same of Clare.
~~~
Clare ended up walking home with you and Hiro that day, chatting and laughing her obnoxious laugh. You cringed as she giggled, sounding like a seven year old girl talking to a cute boy. You remained quiet for most of the walk, almost cracking when she leaned her head on his shoulder for a split second. It had taken all your self control not to strange her on the spot.
As you stopped by her house, you could have sworn she flashed a mischievous grin your way as she headed up to her house. After that, you gripped Hiro's hand tightly, reassuring yourself he was all yours. Hiro loved you and only you... you were sure of it.
