Chapter 18

You had no wish to get any closer to the figure, scared to find out who it might be.

"What do you mean... your mistake?" You asked slowly, the panic in your chest rising as the man let out yet another bloodcurdling laugh.

"She... led me astray. But now I have you, and it won't happen again."
In one, brisk movement, he walked over to the limp form, grasped what looked like an arm, and dragged them closer, until they lay under one of the few shafts of light filtering in through the broken roof.

You brought a hand to your mouth to keep from letting out a scream. Laying on her back, unmoving and silent, was your sister.

"Asia!" You wailed, tears immediately springing to your eyes. You wanted desperately to run to her, but your wrists were tightly bound, and your ankles were tied to the chair; still, you wiggled your hands and feed, trying in vain to squirm out of your bindings. "No," you sobbed, doubling over as a wave of nausea hit you. "Not her, not her."

"You have her eyes, you know," the voice seemed to soften slightly, and you heard footsteps echoing closer to you, saw the man's shadow fall a few feet away from the legs of your chair, heard his ragged breathing. Now, you were too overcome with grief and rage to think straight. All you wanted was to wring his neck, and make him pay for what he did to your father, and your sister. She was all the family you had left, and all your could do was pray she was alright.

"Why do you--" you started, but stopped as the lump in your throat swelled, stopping you from continuing.

"You're a stupid little girl," he spat, walking even closer to you, the anger once again rising in his voice.

"You're insane!" You screamed, throwing your head up to glare at him. He remained silent for a moment, like he was mulling over what you had said.

"You're absolutely right!" he cackled. "And it's all YOUR FAULT!" You flinched, unable to speak, breath, or even see. Tears streamed down your stinging cheeks, blinding you, and pooling down your chin to soak the neck of your shirt. You were shaking uncontrollably out of fear and anger -- if you'd been standing at that moment, you were positive you would've collapsed under your weak, trembling knees.

"Y-y-you're t-the man who-who killed... my f-father!" You managed, squeezing your eyes shut to ease the pounding in your head, but at the man's next sentence, your head snapped up in shock, and you could only stare, speechless.

"Man?" He chuckled, "I'm insulted." An uneasy silence settled over you, and when you didn't break it, he spoke again. "You shouldn't go assuming things Missy." Halfway through that sentence, the man's voice changed. The strangled, unpleasant robotic voice melted away, replaced by a light, feminine one. Icy shock pulsed through you, and you froze, unable to speak, move, or even tear your gaze from the man -- or woman, standing before you. "I'm not sure you remember me," she teased with her high, sweet voice. "But I sure remember you, and I guess I owe you some kind of explanation, you know, before I kill you." You felt like throwing up.

That voice... it sounded familiar, but you couldn't put your finger on it for the life of you. She still hadn't shed her heavy black cloak, and it was pulled tightly over her face, shielding it from view, but it didn't block out her voice in the slightest, and considering what the rest of her speech contained, you wished desperately that it did.
